From 7 to 19 December 2022, the second phase of the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity () was held in Montreal, Canada. During the meeting, the China Corps Conference, with the theme of "Accelerating the commercial action to achieve the protection of biodiversity in China", released the "Collection of Enterprise Biodiversity Conservation Cases", and Mengniu was selected as the only dairy company.
It is understood that the "Collection of Enterprise Biodiversity Conservation Cases" released on the 9th was jointly compiled by multiple cooperative institutions, soliciting and consulting related information from hundreds of Chinese and foreign companies, and selecting 23 companies as best practice cases. This case set highlights operability and is a practical material to guide Chinese enterprises to carry out biodiversity protection and learn from each other's protection practices.
Protect biodiversity, Mengniu is in action! As the "national team" of dairy industry, Mengniu is well aware of the importance of biodiversity protection and elevates it to the level of corporate strategy. Mengniu takes "Give nature and bloom together" as the vision of biodiversity conservation, and has fully implemented it through three major paths and five actions, and has worked with partners to jointly protect the biodiversity upstream and downstream of industrial chain .
In terms of responding to climate change and protecting the global ecology, Mengniu joined hands with Boston consulting company to formulate and release Mengniu's dual carbon strategic plan, and clearly proposed that it will achieve carbon neutrality in the entire industrial chain (Net Zero) by 2050, and planned 15 specific measures covering production, raw milk, packaging, transportation, products, and carbon offset. At present, Mengniu's "dual carbon" strategy has achieved remarkable results. Its Qujing factory has taken the lead in achieving carbon neutrality , and its green electricity consumption ratio has reached 88.68%. Shangzhi Factory has also obtained TÜV Rhine Waste Zero Landfill Management System Certification , becoming the first factory in the dairy industry to achieve zero landfill management of waste.
In terms of practicing regenerative agriculture and improving the ecological environment, Mengniu's China Shengmu has planted a total of 97 million trees in Ulanbuhe Desert . Its self-operated and cooperative ranches have carried out 100% of manure return to the fields, improving local climate, enhancing soil carbon sequestration capabilities, and protecting the diversity of soil microorganisms, insects and vegetation in milk sources.
in carrying out responsible procurement and achieving positive forest efficiency , Mengniu is committed to eliminating the risks of deforestation. To this end, Mengniu participated in the CGF "Forest Effectiveness" working group and worked closely with the World Economic Forum "Tropical Rainforest Alliance". Currently, 98% of Mengniu's paper packaging is purchased from FSC certified packaging materials or from recycled fiber . In the future, it will gradually increase the proportion of palm oil RSPO certification and the proportion of soybean meal traceability, setting a benchmark for global enterprises' biodiversity protection.
in creating green packaging and reducing environmental pollution , Mengniu reduces the environmental pollution caused by packaging materials through renewable and biodegradable packaging design. Mengniu is the first Chinese consumer brand to sign the CGF gold design principle, and its products are selected as CGF's "Case Collection of Gold Design Principles". At the same time, Mengniu has increased its utilization of recycling packaging, and used recycled packaging to create a batch of fashionable clothing, setting an example for the reuse of resources.
in terms of public welfare innovation and protecting species ecology . During the first phase of COP15 held in Kunming, China in 2021, Mengniu released its first "Biodiversity Report". Its organic brand Bellamy also launched the "Blue Planet" biodiversity missionary charity event, helping children and young people understand biodiversity protection through immersive natural education practices.
In addition, Mengniu also works closely with relevant partners to continue to carry out biodiversity conservation practices. On May 20 this year, on the occasion of the 2022 International Biodiversity Day , the "Industrial and Commercial Biodiversity Conservation Alliance" formed by the Foreign Cooperation and Exchange Center of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and related partners was officially established. Mengniu, as a member of the steering committee, became the first batch of strategies of the alliance.
It is understood that COP15 is the first global conference held by the United Nations on the theme of ecological civilization. The conference is themed "Ecological Civilization: Building a Community of Life on Earth" and aims to advocate and promote the construction of global ecological civilization.During the second phase of the meeting, Mengniu Group worked with many parties to host two theme side meetings: "The Global Biodiversity Framework After 2020 - China Industry and Commerce in Action" and " Ecological Protection Red Line : Biodiversity Conservation Innovation Model", representing China's dairy industry comprehensively demonstrated the methods, practices and application cases of enterprises in biodiversity protection, and called on all sectors to join the ranks of biodiversity protection and protect the common health of mankind and the earth.
