The roof can wander high and low, sit, or even lie down
Since the epidemic, this may be the place where the top gardeners and architects in China have the highest stay density. The "Four Garden Friends" in the Chinese architectural design industry - Ge Ming, Dong Yugan, Tong Ming , Wang Shu , two garden projects with great pioneering and experimental significance in this garden project, Tong Ming has visited here many times. In addition, many architects come here to see them.
This is not Dong Yugan’s first private housing project, but it has caused him to linger, probably because this is the first garden that can be designed according to his ideal. It was also in this garden that he ushered in another "first": the first time to pile up mountains - this may be the historic first Chinese garden development that was interrupted in the late Qing Dynasty.
▲
Although it is strange for Chinese people today to own a mountain at home. Going forward, whether it is the Jinling masters in " Dream of Red Mansions " or the small Sumen households in "The Six Dreams of Floating Life", they all build gardens and pile up mountains. When the garden is completed, they name and inscription the garden according to the scenery, and organize poetry meetings in the garden. Baoyu Seeing that his father wanted to sneak away was also in the garden. It was extremely ordinary and elegant
Therefore, when he heard Chen Fei call someone and say "I'm on my mountain", Dong Yugan was so moved. Suddenly, it was a hundred years since he realized that he had been turning over.
As Party B, it is not easy to design completely according to your ideals when Party A is entrustment, let alone live there from time to time after construction. Therefore, there is a very romantic description of the living experience of the architect:
"I often sit there and watch the waves stirred by the water, rippling layer by layer, and then the water lilies are on one side. I can see people working near the table inside, and children running around on it... I sometimes feel it is a bit hallucinating."
The following is Dong Yugan's self-report.
▲
Dong Yugan, a famous architect, architectural critic, associate professor of Architecture Research Center of the School of Urban and Environment, Peking University,
I have always thought that for example, a villa is a very rich person and lives in a very poor product. It is no different from an apartment. All rooms are crowded together. The relationship with nature is probably a relationship of lighting and ventilation.
▲
The main view of the main bedroom is the courtyard, bamboo and banana , open the door, there is a bamboo forest in the corridor, sitting on the windowsill at the door, you can see the mountains, photograph/Zeng Renzhen
But the most interesting thing about the garden is that there are scenery: there are scenery in the room, and there are scenery along the road. Building a garden means first to make the scenery, and then stay wherever people want to stay, then put the house wherever you want to live, and then string it together with the road.

The stream and mountain gardens are basically the first time I have done it according to my own ideals, which is the living experiment I have always wanted to do: a mu garden, that is, a contemporary Chinese family gardening. I want to compare Chinese gardens with Western villas. What can the same area make the garden look like? After seeing the creeks and mountains, I feel that living in a garden is better than living in a villa.
▲
Floor plan of the water-soaked layer of the stream and mountain garden, picture/Qianliang
There is a relatively large pond to the north of the stream and mountain garden, and there is an abandoned kiln pit in the south, with a lot of water, which is an ideal gardening condition.
land is one acre of land with a construction area of more than 400 square meters. The initial plan was to do half of the construction and half of the garden. In order to create and utilize the scenery to the greatest extent, I piled the mountains in the middle, and the house spread around the mountain.
While piled up mountains, water was introduced, surrounded by water on the north and west sides, and the water was also introduced into the courtyard and the basement.

▲
1 The courtyard near the entrance on the south side, facing the south frame, the bamboo forest
The south side of the houses, and there is no mountains and water, so a series of small courtyards are designed. This ensures that each room has 2-3 relatively good scenery, which is the logic of the spatial layout.
Three bedrooms and two living rooms
The whole layout is arranged according to the layout of three bedrooms and two living rooms.

Main bedroom is located in the southeast corner, close to the entrance, without mountains and water, so I made a separate small courtyard and planted bamboo, called Zhuli.

Base According to the mountain situation, cut the concrete wall, cut out the window holes, and frame the mountain scenery one by one. Almost every room in the entire stream and mountain courtyard has frame views.
▲
Live long, because it is facing the mountain, it is named "mountain"
Sometimes the green shadows of banana trees and bamboo forests are framed, such as the main bedroom; some mountain views, such as the second bedroom, Hengshan Hall; and water views, such as the tea room and the north side of Hengshan Hall. The scenery you see is different in the four seasons, and it is different when it rains and sunny.
Hengshan Hall: Making rainy days
▲
Hengshan Hall
Hengshan Hall, "tang" is the most important space in the garden. Symmetrical sloped roof with eaves pressed very low. Here, I created a "raining" scene.
On the roof of Hengshantang, drip devices are installed on both sides of the symmetrical roof, which is to cool down and create the rain scene that Chinese people like to write the most.
▲
The frame view on both sides of Hengshan Hall, one looks at the mountains and the other looks at the water
▲
The roof of Hengshan Hall has ripples, and it also forms a cavity for ventilation and heat dissipation
Speaking of love to rain, only Chinese people in the world invented dripping water. The poets of the Tang and Song dynasties liked rain so much and made a component called "dripping water". I used the most common tiles, but the masonry method is to press the front tiles against the tiles, which form a cavity between the tiles and tiles, which is heat-insulated and breathable, and water drops down to cool down the house.
The wave reflection of the two oblique glasses was even surprised by me, which was even more moving than the water itself. From the outside and from the house, completely different lights and shadows change with the changes of sunlight and water waves.
House like in a cave
▲
from the mountain and the basement space, like in a cave
▲
On the wall of the basement, there are mountain views in the framed space
My friends and I think the most exciting thing is the basement. Ge Ming believes that this concrete house is a cave. Caves and caves are also classic intentions of traditional culture.
The basement is not my design at all, it is the result of structural calculation. Because the terrain is high in the south and low in the north, the half-story height difference is much different, so I took out a basement by the way.
▲
Looking at the mountains from the basement. The mountains are in a static state, and the dynamic feeling of retreating layer by layer
▲
From the ventilated high window on the south side of the basement, a small stone wall is piled up to form the intention of passing through this house. It is also the intention of the mountain
Looking to the north in the cave in the basement is great because the mountain view of each window is different. Looking south, we had a high window that originally needed ventilation, so we piled a small stone wall outside the high window, forming the intention of passing through this house or a mountain. Combined with the dripping sound of water in the corner, it is particularly like staying in a cave.
▲
Concave from the west side of the basement, and the water was drawn in
1▲
The sunset is in slanted, and the basement is named "Hiding the Light and Keeping the Low"
The basement is facing west and bringing the water in. In the evening, the sunset is slanted. I didn't expect that I could hit so far along the ceiling, so I gave the name of this room a name "Hiding the Light", which means "Hiding the Light and Keeping the Low".
Garden and maze
You need to visit the house in full, and there will be basically no repeated roads in two hours. There are forks everywhere, and then arranged and combined, basically forming a very important impression of a Chinese garden, which is a maze.
As for the entrance, it is already a fork in the mouth as soon as you enter:
▲
At the entrance, water drips down from the ceiling and gathers in the basement. The dripping sound of water will strengthen the intention of the cave in the basement
After entering, there is a semicircular stone, forming a deep pool in the basement, and the water gathers underneath.
▲
Following back from the entrance, passing through the small yard, you can go up the mountain. Photo/Wang Yao
When you see the deep pool and the mountain, there are actually two roads on the left and right, but there is another road: it is to turn back and to a series of small courtyards in the south. This small courtyard can also go down directly to the basement along a corridor, or go up the mountain.
▲
You can walk on the stone, you can sit on the stone on the water, you can find a place to stay or gather. Last time, a group of designers came over, some of them ran to the top of the mountain, some were sitting on the stairs, some were sitting on the big stone, and some were standing there. This is a very ideal garden scene.
▲
Up and down the mountain, there are rich paths.
No matter how you walk, there are different scenery in 2 hours, which will tempt people, constantly exploring and walking, and sitting down and lying down can happen in nature when you want to rest.
▲
Nature and architecture, seamlessly connecting
You can stay on the mountain and under the trees, find a hidden tea room, and you can climb to the highest point and have a great view to enjoy the wind and look out.
This is something that a villa space of 400 square meters cannot be achieved. The three forks are placed in the villa, and one is just going to the toilet, one is going to the kitchen, and the other is going to the living room.
▲
Before piled up the mountain, after selecting the appropriate stone, enter the model, put it in the model, and then consider the relationship between the stones
▲
As I walked, I looked up and there was also a scenery
The process of gardening was a bit like writing poetry, with some drafts, but it will change with changes. The improvisational part is very large, which may also be the most interesting thing in gardening. During the construction process, I found some things that suited the mountain residence, and then I captured and expressed the changes.
Contemporary home gardening in China, I have wanted to do this experiment for a long time. I think the ideal area is actually two-part land (about 133 m²), because nowadays, there are generally small families in China. After coming to Xuzhou to start this experiment, Ge Ming suggested that I build a two-acre garden and finally took the first: one acre (about 666 m²), which is also a relatively common villa with a footprint.
▲
The banana tree facing the living room is also a road up the mountain. Photo/Zeng Renzhen
The stream and mountain garden can be done according to my own ideals, because I do both the architecture and the landscape, so the relationship between building a house is very easy. I build a house and the scenery.
is actually very luxurious. Under the current building specification , it is difficult to achieve a high degree of integration of architecture and landscape, because the landscape can only be done after the house is built, two groups of people and two design jobs.
▲
Charming corners and lights and shadows can be seen everywhere. Photo/Wang Yao
Finally, our culture, or our technical specifications actually contain a set of Western culture - the specifications of Chinese architecture and even urban planning come from the West, basically a villa layout, a house, and a large circle of grasslands around it, but this is actually the structure of a church.
For this reason, I have been resolutely not reading Western books for nearly 10 years, but want to read Chinese books back.

Last year, Chen Fei and I tested the waterfall on the mountain. Chen Fei answered a call, and his friend asked where Chen Fei was? Chen Fei said I was on the mountain, and people asked you which mountain you were on? I still remember Chen Fei's answer: "I'm on the mountain of our house."
Jiashan is actually a very important plot in China in the past. You have a mountain in your own home, and the blood of your ancestors condenses in a space. I haven't heard it for many years. Someone said it, right on our mountain. That time I was very impressed by it. His friend was completely confused, their family had a mountain.

From 2018 to the present, my partner Qian Liang and Zhu Xi and I have been participating in the design of the Xishan Pavilion, and have been changing it. Basically, the three of us got the same conditions and started to do it at the same time. After we finished, we evaluated the plan with each other. As we evaluated it, we basically came out which plan should be taken out.
They were two of my graduate students. I have a good friend who calls them a partner, which is strange, but I think once they graduate, I will be with me. I am just a little older than them. I don’t lack hands or feet, and I don’t need assistants. In addition, I think the partner means that he can blame you, I encourage this matter, and we need to move forward together.

Rain days and shadows are all favorites of Chinese literati. Photo by Zeng Renzhen, Wang Yao
I didn’t have a studio before, I just worked alone. My graduates think it would be better to help me instead of going to the design institute to do something they are unhappy with. But they also got married, and it was not suitable for them to be like this, so they built a studio called Qianting Studio.
I was in a very bad time. It was during the epidemic, others began to lose their jobs and I started to start a studio, so I actually had a poor income in the past two years. Fortunately, I ran away with shame and suddenly found that I couldn’t finish my work, because I had never looked for a job in the past.
We are recently making a tea space for artist Chen Wenling in his hometown of Anxi, Fujian. This project was also accidental. I went to Anxi to drink tea with him for two days, and then some unintentional words stimulated him. Not long after I came back, he invited us to design.
What do you mean? I said there are so many tea rooms in China, but there is no " Tea Party " designed for tea and drinking tea.

I never thought that there would be so many interior designers going to see my construction site. There was an interior designer who should have done it very successfully, so he told me that he had achieved this point and didn’t know what future the interior would have... I couldn’t comfort him at that time.
Later, several interior designers who came to Xishanting told me that the reason they always wanted to go and see was because they suddenly discovered that there was a new vision for the interior.
