The real shift in priority spending on space is in the 2019 budget application, when the Pentagon declared space as a war area.
In the 2021 fiscal year, the U.S. Air Force requested $15.4 billion for the new space force. According to the Air Force’s own calculations, this is $800 million more than the $14.6 billion requested by the Department of Defense for the same project in fiscal year 2020.
Although the application for the 2022 budget has not been finalized or announced, Thompson said that this will include a significant increase in space expenditure. Z1z
further said that the fiscal requirements for 2023 will continue the military's trend of prioritizing space in the budget. He added that the space force’s funding strategy will balance innovation, international and commercial partnerships, and the need to quickly provide capabilities to the force. The planning guidelines recently issued by the Space Force are the reason for this strategy.
