Severe test
( The fifth column in Liaoshen Campaign )
1. The situation on all battlefields across the country
1948 is the season of great harvest on all battlefields across the country. Our People's Liberation Army is victorious! The Central Plains Field Army advanced into Dabie Mountains , threatening the important city of Wuhan; East China Field Army advanced into Jiangsu, Shandong, Henan and Anhui, threatening the old nest of Chiang Kai-shek ; the Northwest Field Army annihilated the enemies that invaded our old holy land in northern Shaanxi (including Yan'an), and successfully recovered the lost land and advanced into the Guanzhong Plain; the North China Field Army has divided the enemy into Pingjin, Baotou , and Taiyuan; the Northeast battlefield has divided the enemy into several isolated strongholds in Shenyang, Changchun, Jinzhou , and Huludao . So far, our army has gained experience in attacking medium-sized cities with a population of 400,000 and 500,000. For example, the Central Plains has conquered cities such as Kaifeng , Luoyang , East China has conquered Jinan, North China has conquered cities such as Linfen , Hebei, and Northeast China has conquered cities such as Siping , Liaoyang , Anshan , Yingkou , these are all medium-sized cities with a population of 400,000 and 500,000. Our field army has already had experience in building solid cities, fighting periphery, breaking through, and street fighting, which have created favorable conditions for our army to attack cities.
All base areas in our liberated areas have carried out land reform, the people are the masters of their own country, the economy is thriving, and there is enough manpower and material resources to support the War of Liberation. In Chiang-managed District, the economic crisis of , , inflation of , people are living in poverty, and the people's anti-Chiang struggles are one after another. This is a sharp contrast between the situation in the Liberated Area and the Chiang-managed Area at that time.
2 and 5th Columns fighting experience
5th Column is an army of Northeast Field Army , which was developed by the Liaonan Military Region and the Independent First Division. From a global strategic perspective, there are stages of retreat, stalemate and counterattack, and it has two regiments responsible for the task of eliminating bandits and consolidating the rear. During the local strategic defense stage, all the five columns insisted on guerrilla warfare behind enemy lines.
As Marshal Luo Ronghuan instructed when compiling the Fourth Field War History in 1959: "If you don't write the Fifth Column in the Northeast battlefield, there are only regular troops, no guerrillas in the Northeast battlefield, only front battlefields, no battlefield behind enemy lines, and only regular battles, no guerrilla warfare. "It was the Fifth Column that carried out guerrilla warfare in a comprehensive manner behind enemy lines. In the difficult eight months, it made the greatest sacrifice, persisted in guerrilla warfare behind enemy lines, and delayed the encirclement and suppression of the enemy's New Sixth Army, part of the 52nd Army, and four independent divisions (Puppet Manchukuo National Army), and several newly compiled miscellaneous guerrilla warfare. Our Liaonan Military Region and the only division, we went out to the south of the Yangtze River with four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of four out of In the 1.947 summer offensive , with the heroic spirit of the people's soldiers in Liaoning, the enemy was broken, the attacking enemy was annihilated, and 7 counties were conquered in one fell swoop.
The Liaoshen Campaign began in full swing on September 12, 1948. Our fifth column was ordered to prevent the five elite troops of Liao Yaoxiang's Ninth Corps from moving back to reinforce Jinzhou and destroying the railway and highway transportation lines from North Manchuria to Jinzhou in Xiushui Hezi, Zhangwu County, Xinlitun Town, to prevent the five elite troops of Liao Yaoxiang's Ninth Corps from moving back to reinforce Jinzhou and destroying the railway and highway transportation lines from North Manchuria to Jinzhou. On the night of September 12, our cavalry reconnaissance company met the vanguard of the 22nd Division of the enemy New Sixth Army in Xiushui Hezi, capturing more than 10 people below the enemy platoon leader. According to the prisoner's confession, the enemy first seized Xiushui Hezi, Zhangwu County, and Xinlitun Town, destroyed the supply line from Beiman to Jinzhou, and then reinforced Jinzhou from the side. After research and deployment by the leadership of the column: First, the 11th Division seized the Zibeishan area of Xiushui River to the front line of Zhangwu , and the 14th Division was deployed in Zhangwu. The 13th Division seized the south side of Zhangwu River, occupied favorable terrain, and protected the railway bridge. The 45th Regiment of our 15th Division is defending in Zibei Mountain, Xiushui River.
The 22nd Division of the New Sixth Army began to attack the 45th Regiment of Xiushui Hezi on September 13. Under the cover of planes, tanks, , and cannons, the enemy attacked more than 10 times in one day, all of which were defeated by my 45th Regiment. More than 500 casualties were killed and I also sacrificed the regiment commander Comrade Shi Jian, and more than 200 people below the battalion and company cadres were injured.I blocked the front line from Xiushuihezi to Zhangwu for seven days before the New Sixth Army entered Wanbao City five miles southeast of Zhangwu. There was only one reinforcement battalion. I was immediately surrounded by the 40th Regiment of the 14th Division, which I was waiting for. After more than 10 hours of fierce fighting, all the enemies were annihilated.
The enemy's New Fifth Army (formerly the 14th Division of the New Sixth Army) was on the east bank of the Liaohe River and had more than 10 delusions to cross and attack the west bank of the Liaohe River. A strengthening battalion where the enemy forced to cross the river was annihilated by our 13th Division in Tuanzi Mountain in Hexi. The enemy's follow-up troops successively crossed and smuggled, and were also stubbornly resisted by our 13th Division and all defeated. Our sixth column arrived in front of Zhangwu and annihilated an enemy reinforcement battalion in the east of Zhangwu, forcing Liao Yaoxiang's corps to progress slowly in front of our fifth and sixth columns, resulting in a blocking and defensive battle between Xiushuihezi and Zhangwu and Xinlitun for 25 days. After the task was completed, I was ordered to give up the front lines of Zhangwu and Xinlitun Towns and voluntarily move to the front lines of Wufeng and Liangjiazi Towns in Henan, Zhangwu. The attempt of Liao Yaoxiang's corps to force cross the Liao River was declared to be unsuccessful.
·At this time, on the front, our army had begun to attack Jinzhou. We were ordered to move to Fuxin City to rest and standby, that is, let the enemy down Heishan, Dahushan, and Beizhen . At this point, during the Liaoshen Campaign, our mission to block Liao Yaoxiang's corps from both sides of the Liao River to destroy the transportation supply line from North Manchuria to Jinzhou was completed, that is, the mission of our column and the Sixth Column in the first phase of the Liaoshen Campaign was temporarily over.
When the main force of my Mubei attacked and annihilated the Jinzhou Fan Hanjie Corps, Liao Yaoxiang Corps had entered the Heishan, Dahushan, and Beizhen. Our column was ordered to move with the Sixth Column to both sides of the Zaoyang River, Daling River, and cut off the retreat of the enemy Liao Yaoxiang Corps for the defeat and fleeing Shenyang, and did not allow one soldier to retreat from Heishan, Xinmin along the railway and highway to Shenyang City. The railway (inclusive) returns to the sixth column to the south and to the fifth column to the north. After I cut off the retreat of Liao's regiment back to Shenyang, I took offensive measures. I led the Forty-fifth Division's Forty-first Regiment to cross the Yayang River as a guide. According to my reconnaissance staff report: "The enemy is concentrated in a large area, with about tens of thousands of people speaking, claiming to fight back to Shenyang. While I informed the commander of the 41st regiment, Comrade Wang Daoquan, and at the same time ordered the entire regiment to bombard the concentrated enemy with a fierce bayonet. After a fierce attack, the Liao regiment's New Sixth Army, New First Army and a division of the New Fifth Army were dispersed. Other follow-up troops of our army arrived one after another. After more than 50 hours of fierce fighting, the deputy commander of the New Sixth Army was captured. Wen, deputy commander of the New Sixth Army, Wen, and the New Fifth Army of the Liao regiment. More than 40,000 people below Shaoshan.
We and other brothers wiped out Liao Yaoxiang's regiment. Our column blocked and blocked and encircled until it completely wiped out the enemy. After more than 40 days of repeated fierce battles. Comrade Peng Longfei, the commander of the 15th Division, was injured, the commander of the regiment Zhu Yunshan , the political commissar of the regiment Zhang Tongxin, and the political department of the regiment Li Wenzhi were injured, and the commander of the regiment Shi Jian, the battalion and company cadres were sacrificed. The experience of this battle is extremely rich.
3. The rich combat experience gained by the fifth column in the Liaoshen Campaign: (I) Know your enemy and you will never be defeated in a hundred battles." When our fifth column was formed, the main leading cadres came from North Manchuria and ' Liaodong . At that time, some comrades had the following views on the understanding of the enemy and us:
(1) The combat command characteristics of the enemy commander Liao Yaoxiang and the New Sixth Army were still the views in the winter and early 1946 years.
(2) The New Sixth Army was divided into two armies, the New Sixth Army and the New Five Army, and the combat effectiveness had been weakened. There was also a regiment and several battalions and companies that were annihilated by me. This is because they had not been with Liao for nearly 3 years. The objective reasons for the Yaoxiang Corps' confrontation.
(3) Most of the new main leaders are from the main force and do not understand the qualities of the newly built Fifth Columns. Some comrades believe that each division of the Fifth Column has experience in fighting guerrilla warfare in the rear of the enemy, and has no experience in attacking, defense, and attacking head-on. It is ignored that the Fifth Column divisions have fought against the New Sixth Army divisions commanded by Liao Yaoxiang for 3 years. They have annihilated the New Sixth Army Transportation Regiment (in fact, this regiment is an infantry regiment with strong combat effectiveness), and have annihilated a reinforced battalion and several companies twice, and have the advantage of daring to fight night battles, close combat, and bayonets.
4) Every commander and fighter of the old Red Army and the old Eighth Route Army should learn from them very seriously. This is extremely important. Anyone denying the old traditions of the old troops is wrong, but it is not enough to only see the favorable side.
(5) The Fifth Column does not have the old Red Army, and the Old Eighth Route Army only has two or three companies as the basic backbone, and the New Eighth Route Army only has two or three companies. This is indeed true, but among its cadres are the Old Red Army and the Old Eighth Route Army, and they are good cadres drawn from the major regions in the pass to respond to the call of the Party Central Committee to "seize the Northeast". Among the new troops expanded under the new conditions, these old cadres have brought old traditions and old experiences to the troops. Especially in recent years, their long-term combat experience with the 14th Division, 22nd Division and 207th Division of the New Sixth Army cannot be ignored. They have fought guerrilla warfare behind enemy lines for nearly one year and have to fight almost every day. Sometimes they can only get rid of the enemy's pursuit and siege, and have rich experience in close combat, night battles, and fierce rushing and bayonets.
Our comrades from the old army only see their shortcomings and weaknesses, and cannot see their experience in fighting the New Sixth Army commanded by Liao Yaoxiang. This is not comprehensive enough. The 25-day blocking battle, a few days of blocking battle, and finally a large-scale encirclement and annihilation of the New Sixth Army, the New First Army, and the New Fifth Army fully demonstrates that only by looking at this army from the perspective of historical materialism and dialectics can we achieve "knowing ourselves and our enemy, and never winning a hundred battles." This is more important for senior cadres . When writing a comprehensive report to the headquarters in the early stage of the new fifth column, although there were serious, serious and patient conversations about the characteristics of the troops mentioned above, they failed to reach a consensus at that time. Only through the practice of this decisive battle in Liaoshen, can we unify our understanding.
(II) is facing severe tests. Although the Fifth Column has the experience of independently annihilated an enemy division and conquering Yingkou alone, such large-scale and large-scale combat faces severe tests in offense, defense, or command of the army, division, or regiment. This battle was an offensive and defensive battle between the large corps and the army. We will first cooperate with friendly forces to fight defensive battles, protect the front lines of Zhangwu and Xinlitun, and enable the main force in the Northeast battlefield to siege Jinzhou to win.
The target of defense battle is the Liao Yaoxiang Corps, the main force of the enemy in the Northeast battlefield. They are the main force of the United States' equipment, especially the New Sixth Army and the 38th Division of the New First Army, which are the main force among the main forces. But for the Fifth Column, this combat target is not unfamiliar. In the battle between the two armies, especially in the battle of Ximucheng, the enemy failed to succeed in trying to annihilate our only division, and the test of guerrilla warfare in the past year, the opponents are familiar with us, and the cadres and soldiers of our divisions and regiments are also familiar with them. On the first day, in the defense battle of Xishuihezibeishan, although I sacrificed the regiment commander Comrade Shi Jian, the enemy was also shot dead by more than 500 people below the battalion and regiment commander, and I was unable to capture our position.
The next day, the 44th Regiment of the 15th Division moved to a new position, built new fortifications, organized cross-fire power, and severely damaged the enemy. After 7 days and nights, our 15th Division fought against Liao's corps, under the cover of aircraft and cannons, and as soon as the enemy entered the vicinity of Zhangwu City, the 14th Division, which I was waiting for, was hit head-on by the 14th Division, who was on high alert. After more than 10 hours of fierce fighting, it annihilated a reinforced battalion of the 22nd Division of the enemy. Afterwards, I blocked the area in Zhangwu for another week, and under the cover of my artillery regiment, I safely moved to the south bank of Zhangwu River to defend. Our 13th Division was in Henan, Zhangwu, annihilated the enemy who had crossed the Liao River from the south, and detoured the enemy in a strengthening battalion in Zhangwu, and the Sixth Column replaced our 14th Division in the Zhangwu area. The main task of our column is to prevent the enemy from crossing the Liaohe River from south of Zhangwu to Xinlitun and moving back to Jinzhou, thus achieving the goal of attacking Jinzhou and encircling and annihilation of the enemy. The Sixth Column left a division in the Zhangwu area, and the main force also turned to the south, swearing to block the enemy to the death and ensuring the smooth completion of the Jinzhou siege mission.
In this way, with the cooperation of the brothers, all the commanders and soldiers of our column completed the tasks assigned to us by their superiors accurately and withstood a severe test.
(III) The Liaoshen Battle can also be said to be the final decisive battle on the Northeast battlefield. There is offense and defense in the decisive battle. Attack means siegeing the city and encircling and annihilation of the strategic locations of the enemy in Jinzhou. We must also gain strategic points, and we must also have defense, taking into account both the siege and the attack on aid. The main task of our fifth column is to attack and aid, that is, according to Chairman Mao’s strategic policy of active defense, occupy some favorable terrain, build some favorable fortifications, put the enemy within 100 meters, use grenades, , light and heavy machine guns to attack, and then implement counterattack , which causes hundreds or even hundreds of enemies to be killed and injured in front of our position. We quickly took some enemy weapons and ammunition and returned to our position. After the enemy's repeated attacks were hit by our counterattacks, when the frontal attack was impossible, we had to detour on both sides.
We take the front to resist, force the enemy to attack on the flanks, and choose their weaknesses and carry out counterattacks. In more than 30 days of blocking and blocking, two enemy reinforced battalions, four companies and seven platoons were won. This also fully proves that our column is a new and combat-effective force trained and grown up in the cruel struggle. In the strategic decisive battle on the Northeast battlefield, we have withstood the test and successfully completed the tasks of blocking, blocking and encircling.
(IV) melee combat and night battle are effective tactics of annihilation of the enemy in a long-term war. In particular, we use inferior equipment to fight against enemies with excellent equipment, and adopt close combat and night battles to annihilate the enemy. During the ten-year civil war and eight-year war of resistance against Japan, our army mostly used night and close combat tactics, used our strengths to defeat the enemy's shortcomings, and annihilated small groups of enemy troops.
The divisions of our fifth column were expanded by few old troops in the late period during the War of Resistance Against Japan in the early stage of seizing the Northeast. Due to the reactionary strategic policy of "first south and then north" of the Kuomintang's Northeast Suppression Commander-in-Chief, Du Xingming, the divisions of our throne located in the southeast, were the first to be hit. Although they won many battles, they suffered great losses. Then came the guerrilla war behind enemy lines facing extreme difficulties and difficulties.
The combat targets were Chiang Kai-shek's direct expeditionary troops, the New Sixth Army and the Fifty-Second Army. They are all American equipment. In combat, artillery attacks are the main focus. Even in order to attack and annihilate the enemy, I often adopt favorable melee and night battles, and annihilate many enemies. This time we were fighting the enemy. The enemy used all the planes, cannons, and tanks they had and fought to the death with me. The blocking operations of our column for the past 40 days were moved to favorable terrain or transformed terrain and built fortifications when enemy aircraft bombarded and artillery bombarded. Only when the enemy entered within 100 meters could they be shot down with machine guns, , rifles, and grenades. In the defense battle of Zibeishan, Xiushuihehe, our 45th Regiment defeated more than 10 attacks from the 22nd Division of the New Sixth Army in one day, causing the enemy to fail to capture our position, killing and injuring five or six hundred enemies, and catching up with his sharpness. This will give our column time to build positions, block them step by step, and kill and injure the enemy in large quantities. The 14th and 13th Divisions entered the prepared positions and when the enemy's vanguard arrived, they each annihilated an enemy's reinforced battalion, creating a favorable situation.
(5) Characteristics of encounters. Our column encountered the 22nd Division of the New Sixth Army at Xiushui Hezi from the beginning. Our column was originally planning to control the railways and highways from Shenyang to Zhangwu in the areas of Xiushui Hezi and Yujiawobao. Since the enemy was a mechanized division, I originally planned to enter the designated location two nights, but on the second night I encountered the enemy's pioneer division in Xiushui Hezi. My vanguard regiment, the 43rd Regiment of the 15th Division, first seized the east highland of Xiushui River and organized firepower. If the enemy fails to advance, I will not fight; if the enemy advances, I will put the enemy within a hundred meters. Resolutely block the enemy and cover our column to redeploy.
At the same time, I ordered the 45th Regiment to seize the north mountain of Xiushui River, build fortifications, organize firepower, and prepare to deal with the enemy's attack the next day. The 44th Regiment took the Yujiawo Fort by detour and controlled the railway; the 14th Division and the 13th Division of the 43rd Regiment's cover column came north of Xiushui River and rushed to the Zhangwu City area, first the enemy occupied favorable positions and controlled the railways and highways. The next day, the enemy wanted to occupy the north mountain of Xiushuihe River, but was beaten by our 45th regiment. He stubbornly blocked it all day long. The enemy attacked more than 10 times by our 45th regiment. For a day and night, I deployed my positions in Zhangwu and south and north of Xinlitun and was ready for battle. The Sixth Column heads south from Changchun and it takes as soon as five days to arrive. These five and six days are a severe test for the Fifth Column.
During these five days, my 15th Division withstood the enemy and killed a lot of damage to the New Sixth Army.A vanguard strengthening battalion broke through the defense line of our 15th Division and rushed to the southeast of Zhangwu City. It was hit by our 14th Division head-on, surrounding this prominent strengthening battalion. One of the strengthening company of our 40th Regiment controlled an independent mountain. On this mountain, there were defensive positions that our troops had set during the winter offensive. The enemy attacked four times in one afternoon, but failed to capture it, which created favorable conditions for my 14th Division to annihilate this strengthening battalion. After the Sixth Column arrived in time, they replaced our Column’s defense line on the north bank of the Liaohe River.
The New Sixth Army suffered a blow on the north bank of the Liaohe River. On the south side of Zhangwu, relying on the cover of planes and cannons, they built a floating bridge and forced a reinforced battalion to occupy the bridgehead. As soon as the enemy came, I destroyed the floating bridge with artillery fire. This reinforced battalion was immediately surrounded by the 13th Division. We concentrated our superior firepower and rushed hard. In just 3 and a half hours, we completely wiped out the battalion that claimed to be "unbeaten" that had not escaped.
(VI) "Don't let the enemy soldiers escape back to Shenyang." Following the instructions of our superiors, the small army fought and retreated. My main force moved to the Fuxin area to rest and recuperate, summarized the experience of the first class, and prepared to fight again. The Jinzhou encirclement and annihilation battle is almost over, and we are preparing to move eastward to encircle and annihilate Liao Yaoxiang's regiment. Liao's corps have gone south from Zhangwu, , Faku, to Heishan, Dahushan, and Beizhen, confronting our tenth Column. Our fifth column and sixth column were ordered to set off immediately and turned to the east bank of the Raoyang River with lightning speed. The Sixth Column was south of the Jinshen Railway and Highway (inclusive), and the Fifth Column was north of the railway and highway, blocking the Liao Yaoxiang Corps. The headquarters ordered: "Don't let one enemy soldier escape back to Shenyang, more than half of the casualties have been injured and killed, and the enemy must be blocked."
We are advancing in both directions and breaking the enemy's retreat first. We are both ready to block the Liao regiment and escape back to Shenyang, and we are also ready to come out to respond. We are prepared to fight on both sides and execute this order resolutely, consciously and exemplary. We used the night to force the Zaoyang River to cross the 41st Regiment of the 14th Division as the first echelon. I followed the vanguard regiment and just crossed the Yang River, I got a report from the reconnaissance staff. Five or six miles ahead, there were 50,000 or 60,000 enemies gathered, and the officers were speaking. On the one hand, I ordered Comrade Wang Daoquan, the commander of the 41st regiment to concentrate the entire regiment's mortar, six-O cannon, grenade launcher, bazooka, , light and heavy machine guns, rifles, submachine guns, , to quietly approach the enemy, occupy the favorable terrain, and immediately attack for 20 minutes, apply bayonets, and carry out a fierce rush to disrupt the enemy; on the other hand, order the subsequent troops to follow up and launch an attack on the enemy. As a result, more than 40,000 people were captured from the commander of the enemy's New Fifth Army, Wen Shaoshan, deputy commander of the New First Army, and more than 1,000 howitzers, , field artillery, mortars, and rocket launchers were seized, and more than 1,000 light and heavy machine guns were seized. Yu Ting, with more than 23,000 long and short guns of various types, more than 210 cars, more than 20 radio stations, and hundreds of tons of military supplies.
(7) Is it blocking positively or negatively? Of course it is the former, not the latter. When we repaired the fortifications and fought the enemy who fled back to Shenyang, we were also ready to fight the enemy who came out to reinforce him. When we were bombing at night invincible planes, the main force crossed the Yang River. A regiment just crossed the river. The reconnaissance staff reported that there were 50,000 or 60,000 enemies gathered to speak in five or six miles in front. I hesitated for a moment. I only had one regiment to deal with it. But I immediately decided to concentrate all my firepower to disrupt the enemy first, and at the same time, I sent a staff member to urge the troops behind to follow. After we reported this situation to the Sixth Column, they also rushed across the river from the south of the railway. Other follow-up troops have also come up one after another. As a result, this battle won a considerable victory. Judging from the results after the incident, the effect is good, that is, the soldiers are not too many, but because they are used properly. If you dare to see the bayonet, you can win the more with less and win the better with inferiority. Brave is strength, and positive is strength. In about a year of guerrilla warfare, this style of play is often used to win, and this experience is once again proved in this decisive battle.
(8) The first stage of political and ideological work in two different combat stages is to block the enemy and ensure the victory of Jinzhou's operations. The first task is to ensure the railway transportation from North Manchuria to Jinzhou, the supply of ammunition, food, and equipment. Therefore, I have mentioned earlier that there are defenses and attacks in the first phase of more than 20 days of active defensive operations. The "defense" of political and ideological work is to withstand the enemy's attack and use the tactic of bulls. The enemy has planes, tanks and cannons to cooperate, and we have suffered heavy casualties, especially the platoon, company and battalion cadres. We must not only promptly assign cadres according to combat needs, but also strengthen political and ideological agitation work. The counterattack in front of the position is mainly to kill and injure the enemy and defend the position. The counter-assault is mainly to annihilate the platoons and companies in the defense positions of the people and our country, and at most it is to strengthen the annihilation war of the battalions. This requires the division political commissar Li Hui, Ding Guoniu, He Shanyuan and political cadres of the regiment, battalion and company to do ideological work in a timely manner to ensure victory in the battle.
In the fierce defensive battle on the first day, the sacrifice of the regiment commander Comrade Shi Jian had a great impact on the troops, which required strong ideological work to ensure that the troops were not affected and could continue to complete the blocking mission. During the encirclement and annihilation battle, Comrade Peng Longfei, the commander of the 14th Division, and some regiment and battalion cadres, were injured and did not step down the front line. They continued to command the battle and captured thousands of enemies. We will use these glorious deeds and favorable situations to educate cadres and soldiers, not step down the front line of minor injuries, and encourage combat sentiment to facilitate continuous combat. The battalion commander of the second battalion of the 43rd Regiment led two companies to carry out the tasks of guarding the enemy commander Lu Shaowu, as well as many weapons and ammunition seized. Two regiments of my brother's army snatched away our battalion commander, two companies, together with the captives and the seized materials of the battle. At this moment, we must do in-depth and meticulous ideological work, otherwise it will affect unity.
(9) Since ancient times, "the army and horses have not moved, food and grass have come first." When hundreds of thousands of troops attack the city, logistical support is an important prerequisite for winning the battle. Therefore, the arduous blocking battles in Zhangwu and Xinlitun are of great significance to ensuring the victory of the Jinzhou siege battle. Logistics support is basically adapted to combat needs in the first stage of the blocking war. Regardless of ammunition, equipment, food, and forage are supplied on time, but it is not the case when blocking, siege and annihilation in the second stage. This has both main and objective aspects. The objective reason is that just after several enemy troops passed, they snatched and eaten up all the things from the masses. The subjective reason is that our troops are gathering, and our troops are progressing at a fast speed and the supply of materials cannot keep up. Two days and two nights, nearly 50 hours, I only rely on the little dry food brought by the troops and drink cold water. Both cadres and soldiers had a mouthful of bleeding and their eyes were black. However, since they won the battle, no one said that they were not.
(10) Our column blocked the Liao Corps in the first stage and repelled the active defensive operations in Jinzhou. After more than 20 days of active defensive operations, we ensured that ammunition and other essentials for the siege from North Manchuria were transported to Jinzhou through Zhangwu and Xinlitun to siege. Whether it is defending or attacking for more than 20 days, it can be defended and attacked, and attack can annihilate several enemy troops below the scale of a reinforced battalion. Practical combat has proved that our troops are strong and stand the test. In the second stage, our fifth column, under the order of the headquarters, set out from the Fuxin area, and then passed through the north of Xinlitun to the two railways between Xinmin and Dahongqi Fort. The Xinlitun to Shenyang Railway (inclusive) circumvented the east bank of the Yang River to complete the blocking mission and attack the reinforcements from Shenyang.
Our 14th Division's vanguard regiment crossed the west bank of the Yang River, and carried out a siege and attack with the brother columns that arrived, and captured more than 40,000 enemies. Practical combat has proved that our troops are also strong in the siege attack. Is there any lesson? Yes. In the first stage, there is not enough understanding of active defense, and just defending but not attacking cannot last; in the second stage, when blocking and siege, the Yeshi commanded the battle: "If more than half of the casualties are injured or killed, we must annihilate the Liao Corps. Now we can withstand casualties." Because I couldn't keep up with me, the command post of the column center fell behind for 10 to 15 hours. The troops fought so resolutely, the division commander Comrade Peng Longfei and the regiment commander Comrade Zhu Yunshan were injured, and they led the troops to fight against the enemy, capturing more than 5,000 enemies. The regiment commander, political commissar, and the regiment political department director were injured, and they continued to lead the troops to fight to encircle and annihilate the enemy. These situations fully demonstrate that the troops are doing well.
The only regret is that the command post of the column center fell off, and the radio station fell off, causing our troops to fight fiercely for more than 10 hours to annihilate the enemy, especially the situation where the New Sixth Army and the New First Army were basically eliminated by me, and they could not be reported in time, which made the leader of the Northeast Military Region of the Northeast Military Region not understand the situation of our column, so my column was criticized. When the head of the Northeast Military Region received a report on the situation of our army's first blocking and then siege in the second phase of the battle, he realized that the main reason was that the central command post of the column fell behind, the troops fought bravely and tenaciously based on the actual situation at that time and in the local area. In summarizing the Liaoshen Campaign, I gave me praise.
The Liaoshen Campaign was a decisive battle between our Northeast People's Liberation Army and the Kuomintang army on the Northeast battlefield. Our fifth and sixth columns first blocked the five armies of Liao Yaoxiang's corps. They attempted to seize the front lines of Zhangwu and Xinlitun, destroy the supply lines from the North Manchuria to Jinzhou, and thus reinforce Jinzhou from the side. The enemy's attempt failed and went straight to Heishan, Goubangzi, and Dahushan to reinforce from the front. Our fifth and sixth columns were ordered by the Northeast Field Army to go to the east of the Raoyang River, Jinzhou-Shenyang railway and highway route, and carried out the task of blocking Liao's corps and fleeing back to Shenyang. Then, in cooperation with the main force, after two days and two nights of fierce fighting, the task of annihilation of Liao Yaoxiang's Corps was successfully completed. This battle is an extremely severe test for us, and we have withstood this historical test.
