In September 2022, Japan announced the concept of the next-generation 10,000-ton destroyer. The ship was called a "ballistic missile defense ship" by Japan. Since this was during Japan's and years, this 10,000-ton destroyer was also called the Reiwa version of the "Yamato ship" by the media. In the fiscal year 2023 budget, the Ministry of Defense disclosed more details about this 10,000-ton destroyer.

According to the Ministry of Defense’s concept, Japan plans to build two such missile defense ships to replace the canceled land-based Aegis system to enhance Japan’s missile defense capabilities.
According to the renderings released by the Ministry of Defense, the design of this destroyer abandoned the original trimaran layout and adopted a traditional destroyer hull. It has a total length of 210 meters, a width of 40 meters, and a displacement of up to 20,000 tons, which is close to the "Izumo" aircraft carrier with the largest tonnage in the Sea of Japan.
Due to the installation of the huge AN/SPY-7 active electronic scanning search radar, the destroyer hull appears more "stout" - this radar was originally installed in the land-based Aegis system. In addition to the large size of the radar, the energy system that powers the radar also requires a lot of space.

However, what is even more striking is that this 10,000-ton destroyer has only 80 vertical launch units. Six sets of eight-unit vertical launch systems are installed on the front deck, and there are another four sets of eight-unit vertical launch systems in front of the stern helicopter hangar. In comparison, the Maya-class destroyer in the Sea of Japan, which has a self-displacement of less than 9,000 tons, has 96 vertical launch units. So why does the new battleship , which has a tonnage that far exceeds the Maya class, only have 80 vertical launch units?
"Power" website believes that the fewer vertical launch units of Japan's new warship indicates that the ship is not equipped with traditional missiles. Currently, the self-propelled warships in the Sea of Japan generally use the US military Mk41 vertical launcher unit. The US Navy had planned to deploy the hypersonic missile on the Zum-class destroyer. However, due to the size limitations of the Mk41 vertical launcher unit, the hypersonic missile has been unable to be put on the ship. The US Navy can only dismantle the naval gun of the Zum-class destroyer and replace it with a larger vertical launcher unit.

It is speculated that the reduction in the number of vertical hair units in Japan's new warships is largely related to the adoption of larger vertical hair units. The Japanese Ministry of Defense has proposed in security documents that the new warships will be equipped with two types of missiles: the US-made "Standard-6" missiles and the Type 12 anti-ship missiles. However, the "Power" website believes that these two missiles are not worthy of the Japanese Ministry of Defense's special replacement of large-size vertical launch units on the new warships.
The Ministry of Defense’s bigger target should be the hypersonic missiles being developed. Japan's Kyodo news agency revealed on January 1 that the Ministry of Defense plans to develop hypersonic missiles with a range of 2,000 kilometers or even 3,000 kilometers, which will be deployed in the early 2030s. The extended range version of the Type 12 anti-ship missile that has been mentioned many times before obviously does not meet the requirements of the Ministry of Defense.

However, Kyodo News also mentioned that due to opposition from local residents, the Ministry of Defense has not decided where to deploy hypersonic missiles. The previous land-based Aegis deployment plan was canceled due to opposition from local residents. In addition, the Ministry of Defense is also considering dispersing missiles throughout Japan to reduce the risk of losses after being attacked.
However, if the Ministry of Defense deploys hypersonic missiles on warships that can maneuver at sea, it will avoid public opposition and meet expectations for decentralized deployment. However, if the 10,000-ton destroyers of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces are equipped with hypersonic missiles with a range of 3,000 kilometers, they will inevitably pose a threat to neighboring countries and deserve our high vigilance.
