The unit we are introducing today was formerly the 5th Detachment of the New Fourth Army, which was formed in July 1939 from the 4th Detachment of the New Fourth Army, the 8th Regiment, and the Advancement Regiment. In February 1941, the 5th detachment was changed to the 5th Brigade of the 2nd Division of the New Fourth Army, with jurisdiction over the 13th, 14th and 15th regiments. Thirteen of these regiments are Red Army regiments, whose origins can be traced back to the Tongbai Mountain Red Army Guerrillas in the Hubei-Henan Border Region established by the Hubei-Henan Border Provincial Committee in January 1936. During the Anti-Japanese War, the 5th Brigade, as the "A-Class Brigade" of the New Fourth Army, always persisted in the struggle against the enemy in the Huainan base area. It was tempered by the war and participated in Dongshankou, Bantaji, Huolai'ancheng, Shanzitou, Guizi. The famous battles such as Shanshan and Zhanjigang were affectionately called the "Old Fifth Brigade" by the people in the base area.
After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, in December 1945, the 5th Brigade was transferred to the 2nd Column of the New Fourth Army. In January 1946, it was renamed the 2nd Column 5th Brigade of Shandong Field Army. In July 1946, the 5th Brigade was placed under the new 2nd Division of the New Fourth Army. In October of the same year, the 5th Brigade was renamed the 11th Column of the Central China Field Army. A month later, the 11th Column was transferred to the 7th Division of the Central China Field Army, and the designation of the 5th Brigade was restored. In February 1947, it was renamed the 20th Division of Huaye Seventh Column. In February 1949, the entire army was reorganized and designated as the 74th Division of the 25th Army of the People's Liberation Army, which had three regiments: 220, 221, and 222.

During the Liberation War, the 74th Division (20th Division) participated in Suzhong , Lianshui, Subei, Laiwu, Menglianggu, Linqu, Laiyang, Yanzhou, Huaihai , crossing the Yangtze River, Shanghai and other important battles. In the Battle of Huaihai, the 74th Division (20th Division) and the 33rd Regiment of the 11th Division of the Fruit Army (known as the "Tiger Regiment") fought a bloody battle at Dawangzhuang, becoming the most brutal battle in the Huaihai Campaign to annihilate the enemy Huang Wei Corps. The fierce and bloody intensity directly scared the Xiaowangzhuang defenders (a regiment of the 85th Army) who were watching the battle to death, and they surrendered directly to the 73rd Division (19th Division), which was about to launch an attack. During the Battle of Crossing the Yangtze River , the 3rd Battalion of the 222nd Regiment of the 74th Division was the first to forcibly cross the natural dangers of the Yangtze River and break through the river defenses. After the war, it was awarded the honorary title of "River Crossing Model Battalion" by Sanye, and was also selected as the Hundred Battle Flags in the 70th Anniversary Military Parade of the Founding of the People's Republic of China. .
In July 1952, the military headquarters of the 25th Army was transferred to the Air Force, and the 25th Army was disbanded. The three divisions under the jurisdiction of the 25th Army were merged into two divisions, that is, the 75th Division and the 74th Division of the 25th Army were merged into the new 74th Division (the 221st Regiment of the 74th Division was cancelled, and the 223rd Regiment of the 75th Division was incorporated into the 74th Division, and the 224th and 225th Regiments Transferred to the local military region), and transferred to the 24th Army to participate in the war to resist U.S. aggression and aid Korea; while the 73rd Division was transferred to the 23rd Army to participate in the war to resist U.S. aggression and aid Korea, as we have introduced before. While in Korea, the 74th Division participated in the defense of the Pingkang front line and the counterattack in the summer of 1953, wiping out more than 12,000 enemies in total, and returned to China in October 1955.
In January 1957, the 74th Division was transferred from the 24th Army to the 66th Army. In 1964, the 74th Division participated in the army-wide competition. In October 1969, the 74th Division rejoined the 24th Army. In December of the same year, the entire army reorganized its troops and numbers, and the 74th Division was renamed the 70th Division of the 24th Army (the original 70th Division of the 24th Army was transferred to the 3rd Guard Division). In October 1985, it was reorganized into the 70th Division of the 24th Army, implementing the establishment of the Northern Category A Motorized Infantry Division, and adding a tank regiment (formerly the 24th Army Tank Regiment) and an anti-aircraft artillery regiment (formerly the 24th Army Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment). In October 2003, the 24th Group Army was disbanded, and the 70th Division was reduced to the 70th Infantry Brigade and transferred to the 65th Group Army, known as the "Yanshan Powerful Brigade".
