At that time, the South Vietnamese Navy also had the idea of ​​seizing Jinqing Island. After the U.S. military withdrew in 1973, it left many large warships to South Vietnam Nguyen Van Thieu's regime. In comparison, my country's South China Sea Fleet was still relatively weak at that time, and the South Vietnamese Navy believed that it could act arrogantly in the South China Sea.
Therefore, South Vietnam’s military forces have been constantly operating in the South China Sea, and have also made a series of seriously provocative actions, such as harassing fishermen, shelling islands and reefs, and even openly occupying islands and reefs.
In order to safeguard sovereignty, my country's South China Sea Fleet dispatched two hunting submarines numbered 271 and 274. On the evening of January 17, 1974, they had a confrontation with the South Vietnamese ship No. 4 and ship No. 16, and the South Vietnamese warships fled in a hurry.
Naval battle
Later that day, the militiamen and supplies on the two Chinese hunting submarines began to be transferred to Jinqing Island. In the early morning of the next day, just as the transfer was completed, news from the Yulin base was received. The South Vietnamese Navy was preparing to forcibly land on Jinqing. island .
