When he was newly appointed, the head of the regiment repeatedly warned: The position guarded by your 3rd platoon is the protruding part of the Nala area. It is easily attacked by the Vietnamese army, which is several times my strength. If the position cannot be defended, do not force it. Carry it on, withdraw when it is time to withdraw, and give full play to our army's firepower advantage.
That’s what the leaders said, but the soldiers didn’t think so. It would be a shame if they couldn’t even hold their position. Soldiers are all mortals, and everyone wants to eliminate a few more Vietnamese bandits, achieve meritorious service, send military medals home, and add glory to their ancestors. Therefore, the first thing these three new squad leaders did when they took office was to strengthen the fortifications.
The Vietnamese army is close at hand

The Lao Qingshan position is actually the ridge hump extending northward from the Xiaoqingshan Highlands controlled by the Vietnamese army.
