Singapore Prime Minister’s Office and the Population Administration finally released the total population briefing and analysis for 2022 (ends to June) the day before yesterday (September 26), which includes permanent residents and citizens data immigrating to Singapore . The total population of Singapore is 5.64 million, with a total population increasing by 3.4% in one year. This data includes all Singaporean citizens, permanent residents and non-residents. However, the data in 2022 is still lower than the 5.7 million in June 2019 (before the outbreak).

Since the end of 2009, the Singapore government tightened the immigration framework, and the new data for permanent residents has dropped sharply from around 60,000 to around 30,000. In 2020, due to epidemic prevention measures, the application and approval data dropped by about 5,000 people compared with previous years (the final application can only be submitted in person). In 2021, the data was able to rebound due to the relaxation of measures.
Previously, due to the epidemic, the data of foreign workers dropped about 147,000, and now it has finally rebounded by about 98,000, but it is still lower than the previous data. Many companies are still facing the problem of insufficient employees.
In addition, in the year ended June 2022, Singapore's non-resident population increased by 6.6%, to 1.56 million, down from 1.68 million in June 2019. Most of the newly added non-resident population are work permit holders from construction, maritime shipyards and processing industries.
Although Singapore's population has rebounded after decreasing for two consecutive years, the rate of population aging has accelerated. Among Singaporean citizens, the proportion of the population aged 65 or older increased to 18.4%, far higher than 11.1% in 2012. By 2030, this proportion will reach 23.8%.
In the past few decades, the total fertility rate of Singapore residents has been on a downward trend. The low fertility rate and extended life expectancy have led to a rapid aging of Singapore's population.
