Report said Bannon faces criminal charges for his role in a project called "We Build the Wall" that he participated several years ago, which raised $25 million is spent on building the U.S.-Mexico border wall. He allegedly allegedly obtained more than $1 million from fundraising through a non-profit organization for personal spending.
Two of Bannon's accomplices admitted to conspiracy to telecommunications fraud, but the trial of the third defendant was invalid due to the jury's inability to reach a consensus.
On August 20, 2020, Bannon was arrested for alleged fraud in a fundraising event related to the border wall. Although then-US President Trump immediately "divides" his relationship, Bannon received Trump's pardon before the trial.
Although Bannon received a pardon, the pardon effect is limited to the federal legal level and is invalid for state laws.
Shortly after Bannon received pardon, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance began to investigate Bannon's role in the above fraud case. Last year, his successor Alvin Prague continued to investigate Bannon after taking office.
New York State Attorney General Letticia James plans to hold a press conference at 13:00 (1 a.m. Beijing time on September 9) to announce the allegations against Bannon.
Bannon was one of Trump's earliest political advisers. In 2017, he briefly served as Chief Strategy Officer of the White House and Senior Advisor to the President. Despite the fact that Bannon had a dispute with Trump for a while, Bannon is still a staunch supporter of Trump.
In July this year, a federal jury ruled that Bannon was found guilty of contempt of Congress for ignoring the subpoena issued by the U.S. House of Representatives' Special Investigation Committee. This means he will face up to two years in prison.
There are two crimes involved in Bannon. One is to refuse to testify in court for the investigation of the riots in Congress, and the other is to refuse to provide relevant documents to the investigation committee as required by the subpoena. Each offence can be sentenced to 30 days to one year in prison and a fine of between $1 million and $100,000. U.S. federal court will make a judgment on the case on October 21.
