According to Yonhap News Agency reported on the 211th, the mayor of Seoul said late Wednesday that nearly 100 cases of new coronavirus infection have been found in a call center in southwest Seoul, raising concerns about the possibility of large-scale infection in Seoul and surrounding areas.
Mayor Park Won-soon said that as of 7 pm on the 11th, 99 confirmed cases of new coronary pneumonia had appeared among the 207 employees of the call center. This is the largest infection reported in Seoul so far.
Seoul has a population of 10 million, and if neighboring Gyeonggi Province and Incheon are included, the incident would pose a potential risk to the wider South Korean capital region, which has a population of 25 million.
Mayor Park Won-soon said in an interview with the media that 70 of them were diagnosed in Seoul and the rest were diagnosed in nearby cities. "The original source of infection has not been confirmed."
Park Won-soon also said that no confirmed cases have been found in places other than the 11th floor of the building, which is where a large number of infected people work.
Park Won-soon said at an earlier press conference: "Seoul City will ensure to respond in a detailed manner so that the mass infection incident in the call center will not develop into the situation in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do."
Regarding the source of infection, Mayor Park cautiously stated that the correlation between this mass infection and the "Xintianji" Church is being investigated.
At the same time, South Korea’s Ministry of Health stated that among the 207 staff members of the call center, 5 were found to be believers of the Shincheonji Church. More than 60% of the infection cases in South Korea are related to the Shincheonji Church.
So far, the five believers have tested negative, but the government plans to investigate other cases of infection. The city government also said it would investigate whether the infection had any possible links to the sect.
Mayor Park said: "The list provided by (Xintianji Church) is not complete. We are constantly confirming the list of believers and will conduct a thorough investigation and will not let go of all possibilities."
