Recently, the Medrxiv website released a symptom survey involving 1.5 million people infected with the new coronavirus in the UK. The results show that Omicron is more common than the past viral variant cold and influenza-like symptoms, and the new subvariant BA.2 has more symptoms, which has greater interference with daily life.
researchers selected patient data from the COVID-19 Community Transmission Implementation Assessment Database (REACT-1) from May 2020 to March 2022 to compare the symptom characteristics of different COVID-19 infections, including the original strain, Alpha, Delta, Omicron BA.1 and BA.2, as well as viral load and infection risk data at the time of diagnosis.
The symptoms of the new coronavirus infection involved in this study include 26 types: loss or change of smell or taste, respiratory/heart symptoms (new persistent cough, chest pain, chest tightness, shortness of breath), similar to cold symptoms (running nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, sore throat, hoarseness, eye pain), similar to flu (fever, chills, muscle pain, headache), gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea/vomiting, abdominal pain/stirring, diarrhea, loss of appetite), fatigue-related symptoms (tired, severe fatigue, difficulty sleeping) and other symptoms (dizziness, heavy arms or legs, numbness/tingling).
results found that the proportion of BA.2 infected people with more than one symptoms reached 75.9%, higher than those with other virus infections; the proportion of BA.1 symptoms was 70%, Delta was 63.8%, Alpha was 54.7%, and the original strain was 45%. The average 6.02 symptoms occurred within one week after BA.2 infection, while the original strain, Alpha, Delta, and BA.1 were 2.70, 3.38, 4.63 and 4.63, respectively. Among the original strains, Alpha and Delta infected, the proportion of olfactory and taste disorders or loss is higher, but the most common symptoms in BA.1 and BA.2 infected are fever, and olfactory disorders and loss are not closely related to infections between these two viral viruses.
Ct value is an indicator that reflects the concentration in nucleic acid detection samples. Its characteristic is that the less virus content, the higher the Ct value. The Ct value of BA.2 is significantly lower than that of BA.1. Recent infections tend to have lower Ct values, indicating that symptoms appear faster after BA.2 than other viruses, while 26 symptoms reported to be associated with lower Ct values. Influenza-like symptoms including fever, chills, sore throat, muscle pain, runny nose, sneezing and headaches often appear at the same time.
A higher proportion of BA.2 infected people believe that symptoms have seriously affected their ability to live normally, and the proportion of patients who think that "severe" affecting their lives is 64% higher than those who "small" or "no" effects. Among them, the proportion of female patients who report affecting quality of life is 40% higher than that of males.
Starting from April 2022, the British government has implemented a policy of coexisting with the virus. This study found that fever, chills, sore throat, muscle pain, runny nose, sneezing and headache are the most common symptoms of BA.2 and have significantly affected normal life. With the reduction of epidemic prevention restrictions and free testing channels, if you want to slow down the spread of the virus, infected people need to be vigilant about the relevant symptoms. Do not simply think that symptoms similar to flu are allergic or a small cold. It is recommended to do a virus test as soon as possible.
