In the evening, this food stall specializing in "nutritional sandwiches" began to become lively again...
It seemed that the boss had never stopped holding bread when the oil temperature in the pot rose. The white and fat bread lined up and down in the oil pan, like yellow floats on the water, up and down in the hot oil.
The crowd in line seemed to have increased. In front of the small stall, the boss quickly picked up a pot of freshly fried bread, placed it on the oil drain rack, and then put it down a new bread team again. On the other side, the boss lady began to fill in the bread with stuffing... This is the famous snack "nutritional sandwich" in Taiwan Province.
Speaking of Taiwanese food, there is a red and black list in my heart. When it comes to snacks for weeding, I will choose oyster omelettes (of course, it may be that the ones I have eaten are not authentic enough). Those who are hard to go on the thunder include Mianmian Ice, Milk Tea, Aiyu, Beef Noodles, Pepper Cakes and Nutritional Sandwiches.
Nutritious sandwich, simple ingredients, inexpensive, delicious and full, but it just makes people a little confused. This sandwich is fried golden and crispy and filled with braised eggs, cucumbers, tomatoes, ham and meanitus. A sandwich that combines fried, high sugar and high calorie is obviously not nutritious at all, but why is it called a "nutritional sandwich"?
Where is the nutrition?
If you want to talk about where the nutritional sandwich is, you have to start with its origin...
It is said that the person who invented this sandwich was a snack stall owner named Qiu from Xuejia District, Tainan City. At first, his snack bar sold not sandwiches but sausages.
However, because the business of grilled sausages is fierce, and the sausages that everyone sells are the same, so naturally they cannot stand out in terms of taste. In the red ocean of competition in the sausage stalls, in order to win the competition, I thought of selling fried bread snacks instead.
It is said that it is the creative inspiration obtained by Boss Qiu and his wife after learning the essentials of posting a date from a Shanghai master. At that time, sandwiches were a fashionable snack, and everything was labeled as a sandwich once they were breaded. In addition, at that time [charcoal-roasted sandwiches] had long become a popular snack in the snack street. Therefore, this snack that looks more closely related to bread is called a "sandwich".
As for the word [nutrition], for modern people, everything fried, high in sugar and high in oil has nothing to do with the word "nutrition". However, in Taiwan Province at that time, "nutrition" and "bread" could be said to be synonyms.
In fact, marketing bread into "nutritional food" was purely a nutritional method for foreign flour merchants at that time. In order to sell flour, on the one hand, it advocates that the surface contains vitamins, thanks substances... on the other hand, it devalues the nutritional value of white rice. It claims bread is more nutritious than rice. Over time, "bread" and "nutrition" become mutually exclusive.
In different time and space, you will have different opinions on the nutrition of food. From today's point of view, it is obviously not healthy at all. However, if you don’t care about the nutritional value, just speaking of the taste, nutritious bread is indeed better than many traditional sandwiches, and it makes sense that it can become a mainstream snack in Taiwan. After all, it’s hard not to taste delicious when frying everything ~ haha.
The long bread is covered with bread flour, fry it in a pan until golden brown, the bread is crispy on the outside and still remains soft on the inside. Then add braised eggs, fresh cucumbers or pickled cucumbers, fresh tomatoes, smoked ham, and finally, drizzle them with a lot of meanitus. After biting it, the taste of the fried bread and various ingredients blends into each other, stunning the taste buds and leaving a fragrance on your lips and teeth. They are all very simple ingredients, but the taste is unforgettable. No wonder some people say that eating nutritious bread starts from two.
Today, nutritional sandwiches have also evolved into many new flavors, such as sauerkraut peanut salad, tuna corn flavor, black pepper onion, potato egg salad sandwich, etc. The price is about NT$40 (about NT$10). I wonder if you have ever eaten this snack? Looking forward to sharing the review in the comment section.
The "Mysterious Taiwanese Snacks" shared today are obviously not nutritious at all, but they are still called "Nutritional Sandwich". At this point, the pictures in this article are from the Internet. If there is any infringement, please contact us to delete them. Thank you.
