In recent years, how to stabilize the tourism industry and achieve tourism revenue growth? The main approach of Banan District, Chongqing is to dig deep into the local tourism market, enrich the supply of tourist homestays, and rejuvenate the "Ba County Old Courtyard" hidden in the countryside.
According to statistics from the Banan District Culture and Tourism Development Committee, from January to June 2022, Banan received about 20 million tourists, and the comprehensive tourism revenue reached 8 billion yuan, an increase of 5.35% and 7.94% year-on-year respectively.
Banan is located in the southern part of Chongqing's central urban area, with an area of 1,825 square kilometers. It has 198 administrative villages and is distributed with many "Ba County Old Courtyards" with the characteristics of traditional Bayu houses. However, most of them are dilapidated, some become dilapidated houses due to disrepair, and some are idle because of villagers going out to work.
In this regard, Banan closely monitors market demand and uses market-oriented operations as a means to build 20 "Ba County Old Courtyards" into homestays with unique characteristics, with a daily capacity of 4,000 tourists. According to statistics, in 2021, Banan Tourism B&B received about 228,900 tourists and led to employment of more than 2,000 people.

It has been uninhabited for a long time and is overgrown with weeds. In 2019, she converted the old house into shares and handed over it to a cooperative design and planning company.
General Manager Liu Xiaobo led the team to renovate this old yard, retained adobe walls and old wooden beams, and added modern accommodation facilities, allowing dilapidated old farmhouses to usher in a new life. The reporter saw here that in the courtyard paved with old stone slabs, bamboo pavilions and village houses were hidden among the blue sky and green trees; there were skylights in the room to look up at the starry sky, slides for children to play with, and wine cellars hidden deep in the room... "I never thought that the pigpen could become such an elegant bar, and the loess house could become so beautiful!" Zhao Ling exclaimed repeatedly.

Such a unique design has won the favor of tourists. Since its opening, Liu Xiaobo's rural homestay business has become better and better. "If you want to stay for one night on weekends, you have to book a week or two in advance," said Liu Xiaobo.
In addition to renovating old farmhouses, Banan District also revitalizes ancient and modern architectural resources in the district into homestays. The "Biehuashan House" in Furong Village, Tianxingsi Town was restored and built on the former site of the "Liao Family Courtyard" in the Qing Dynasty, retaining the original tangible, cultural monuments and life style of the ancient building, showing its unique charm.

At present, Banan has completed the survey on old courtyard resources in the district, and has collected more than 80 "Ba County Old Courtyards" with development value. It is planned to revitalize and utilize them through three years to promote the quality and efficiency improvement of the homestay industry.
Bed and B&B not only has diverse styles, but also has rich and colorful business formats. When staying in the "Flower House and Mingyuan", tourists can enjoy a variety of services such as gliding, wild floats, and tea ceremony to experience rural life in an immersive way. In a B&B with the theme of "Game Recompression", the game coins won by tourists can be exchanged for local agricultural products; while a B&B with parent-child characteristics creates a vegetable orchard full of agricultural fun, where tourists can pick and taste the seasonal fruits and vegetables.
Banan District will also organically combine scenic spot tourism with the homestay industry, and continuously explore the path of industrial integration. The reporter found in the popular Tianping Mountain Yunlin Tianxiang Scenic Area in the past two years that there are leisure projects such as cute pet parks, lake rafting, off-road beach bikes, etc. After experiencing special farm dishes, outdoor barbecue, bonfire parties and other activities, tourists can stay in the homestays surrounded by mountains and rivers, stay away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and feel the beauty of nature.
In order to revitalize more idle and abandoned rural old courtyards, Banan District adopts methods of revitalizing and utilizing homestead land such as direct rental, equity investment and voluntary withdrawal of rights to promote the development of the homestay industry, and at the same time make farmers' "purse bags" bulge.After her old farm house is transformed into a homestay, Zhao Ling can pay a dividend of about 20,000 yuan per year as a shareholder of the homestay. Many local villagers have been professionally trained to become waiters or housekeepers of homestays and can find employment at their doorsteps.
"The rich supply of homestays has effectively promoted farmers' income growth and rural tourism development, and empowered rural revitalization." Ma Peidong, deputy director of the Banan District Cultural and Tourism Commission, said that Banan will continue to enrich the supply of tourist homestays and further stimulate the vitality of "old courtyard + tourist homestays".
