First Financial reporter learned that according to the "Catalogue of Recommended Models for Promotion and Application of New Energy Vehicles" (Batch 11, 2019) released in December 2019, the domestic Tesla Model 3 produced by Tesla's Shanghai factory will use the battery cell versions of Panasonic and LG Chem. This is also the first time that Tesla has used non-Panisham batteries. Therefore, LG Chem has mass-produced the 21,700 cylindrical lithium-ion power battery for Tesla Model 3 at its first factory in Nanjing Xingang Development Zone, China.
Why Tesla no longer has a special liking for Panasonic? Automotive industry analyst Zhang Qiang believes that Panasonic has always been supplying Tesla's batteries at a lower price in view of maintaining customer relationships. However, as Tesla's expectations for the demand after the domestic production continue to increase, Panasonic's production capacity is likely to not be able to meet Tesla's needs. In addition, the technical level of other companies such as LG Chem and CATL are also increasing, so Tesla is expected to choose to hold hands with CATL.
It is worth noting that Tesla Model 3 currently mainly uses 21700 cylindrical batteries, and CATL, which cooperates this time, mainly produces square batteries, rather than the cylindrical batteries that Tesla has always used. This means that Tesla is likely to change its technical route and chassis design, and then make significant changes to the overall design.
In this regard, Zhang Qiang believes that the technical standards and principles used for square and cylindrical batteries are very different. Compared with cylindrical batteries with long-term technical reserves, square battery packs have added points to the safety levels such as current control brought by a large number of battery cells. In addition, additional purchases of batteries from local Chinese companies in CATL also include other considerations such as reducing the possible trade risks caused by foreign-funded batteries, and improving Tesla's bargaining power as a vehicle manufacturer and strengthening the vehicle manufacturer's voice in the industrial chain.
In addition, in the conference call after the financial report was released, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that its new model Model Y will start delivery in March this year, which is nearly half a year ahead of its previously announced delivery target for this fall. It is expected that the sales volume of Model Y after its launch will exceed the total of the three models of Model S, Model X and Model 3, and therefore it is expected that the delivery volume in 2020 will easily exceed 500,000 units.
In response to the question of whether the current epidemic affects Tesla's Shanghai factory, Tesla CFO Zach said that in order to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus epidemic, Shanghai super factory has been temporarily closed, but the structure of the Shanghai factory is relatively simple, which will bring higher production efficiency. It is expected that the profits of bicycles in the Shanghai factory will soon catch up with the Fremont factory.
Tesla's financial report released this time showed that its revenue in the fourth quarter was US$7.484 billion, a year-on-year increase of 2%.
