Yesterday, the central bank announced that it will issue the fifth set of 2015 RMB 100-yuan banknotes starting from November 12 this year. By then, the 2015 version of the RMB will be circulated at the same value as the circulating RMB of the same denomination, which means that the old version of the 100-yuan banknote can still be used. Moreover, while new coins are being issued, old coins are also being recycled, which will not affect the total currency circulation.
As of now, my country has issued a total of five sets of RMB. Among them, the first set of RMB appeared in denominations of 500 yuan, 1,000 yuan, 5,000 yuan, 10,000 yuan, and 50,000 yuan; the second set of RMB appeared in denominations of 3 yuan for the only time.
New banknotes launched to improve anti-counterfeiting
It is understood that the main RMB in circulation in my country is the fifth set of RMB issued by the central bank since October 1999. The last update of the RMB version dates back to August 2005. In order to improve anti-counterfeiting technology and update printing quality, the central bank issued the fifth set of RMB in the 2005 version. Why should
introduce new currency? The most direct reason is related to preventing counterfeit banknotes. According to the relevant person in charge of the central bank, during the past ten years, automatic vending equipment and automatic cash processing equipment have developed vigorously, which has put forward higher requirements for the machine-readable performance of the RMB. Some criminals also continue to use new technologies to counterfeit RMB. In order to better protect the interests of RMB holders, it is necessary to continuously improve the anti-counterfeiting technology and printing quality of banknotes based on technological development. To this end, it was decided to issue the fifth set of 100-yuan banknotes in the 2015 edition.
There is no need to deliberately exchange for new currency
The reporter learned that the 2005 version of the 100-yuan banknote can still circulate normally. Judging from the central bank's consistent operating procedures for issuing and withdrawing cash, the new version of the RMB is achieved by "recycling damaged bills and replacing them with new ones." This process does not require individuals to go to the bank to specifically exchange them.
Zeng Gang, director of the Banking Research Office of the Institute of Finance, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said that when this process continues to occur, there will be fewer and fewer old banknotes, and they will even be almost invisible in circulation. But even if the old banknotes are no longer visible in circulation, they can still be circulated as long as the country has not announced a cessation of circulation.
Will not increase inflationary pressure
Some people are worried that the introduction of the new version of the 100-yuan banknote will coexist and circulate with the old version. Will it lead to over-issuance of currency, will the money in hand be "diluted", and will it bring the risk of inflation?
In this regard, professionals believe that there is no need to worry. The central bank issues a new version of RMB by exchanging old ones for new ones, and the cash in circulation will not increase due to changes in banknote versions. Therefore, the issuance of new banknotes will not affect the money supply and will not increase inflationary pressure. Xiao Bo, a professor at the School of Economics at Fudan University, said that since the 4 trillion stimulus plan in 2009, the central bank has been highly cautious in currency injection, so there is no need to worry about changes in the money supply.
Existing banknote detectors need to be upgraded
Some people asked: "The banknotes have changed their appearance, will the banknote detector recognize them?" It is understood that the new version of the hundred-yuan banknotes has made some adjustments to facilitate machine reading and improve machine readability. Relevant banking industry personnel told reporters that due to the upgrade of anti-counterfeiting technology, although the existing banknote detectors do not involve replacement, they need to be upgraded.
