Through "Today in History", we can look at the future from the past and change the future from the present.
Today is March 28, 2022, March 28, 1897, Italian mathematician Brary Forty proposed the paradox at the Barolomo Mathematical Society. This paradox expresses Brary's doubts and contradictions about ordinal theory, and people later named the paradox with his name; Brary Forty is the first publicly published mathematical paradox in modern times, which aroused interest in the mathematical community and led to heated discussions for many years later. There are dozens of articles discussing the paradox issue, which greatly promotes the re-examination of the foundation of set theory . Looking back on March 28 in computer history, what other key events happened on this day?
1939-28: Dov Frohman, the inventor of EPROM, was born

Source: Wikipedia
Dov Frohman was born on electrical engineer and business director of Israel. He is the former vice president of in Intel, and the inventor of erotic programmable read-only memory (EPROM). Froman developed the business of Intel in the Israeli region, and he became the founder and first general manager of Intel Israel. He is also the author of Leadership the Hard Way (co-authored with Robert Howard).
Froman was born in amsterdam , five months before World War II broke out. His parents were Polish Jews, who immigrated to Dutch in the early 1930s to escape Poland's growing Anti-Semitism; in 1942, after Germany invaded the Low Countries, his parents decided to hand over their children to acquaintances of the Dutch Resistance, who placed young Fromman in a village while themselves were murdered in the Holocaust.
After the war, Froman was placed by relatives of Israel and spent several years in an orphanage as a "Jewish child whose parents died in the war"; after the establishment of the Jewish state, Froman moved to Israel in 1949. He was adopted by his relatives, grew up in Tel Aviv, and served in the Israeli army. In 1959, he studied electrical engineering at Israel Institute of Technology. After graduating from the Israel Institute of Technology in 1963, Fromman went to the United States to pursue his master's and doctoral degrees. In 1965, after obtaining an master's degree in from the University of California, Berkeley, Fromman began working in the R&D laboratory of Fairchild Semiconductor Company.

Fromann coincides with the moment when Fairchild Semiconductor Company fell apart. After completing his PhD, he followed former Fairchild Semiconductor managers Gordon Moore ( Gordon Moore ), Robert Noyce ( Robert Noyce ) and Andrew Grove to the Intel company they founded the previous year. It was during the troubleshooting of early Intel products that Forman proposed the concept of EPROM in 1970, the first nonvolatile semiconductor memory that is both erasable and easy to reprogram.
At that time, there were two types of semiconductor memory . Random Access Memory (RAM) chip is easy to program, but when the power is turned off, the chip loses charge (and the information encoded on the chip). In industry terms, RAM chips are unstable. In contrast, the read-only memory (ROM) chip is nonvolatile—that is, the information encoded in the chip is fixed. But programming ROM memory is time-consuming and cumbersome. Usually, data must be "burned" in the factory, and it takes several weeks to burn it; and once the chip is programmed, the data in the ROM chip cannot be changed.
and EPROM are different, it is nonvolatile and reprogrammable. It is a catalyst that leads to the innovation and development of flash memory technology. EPROM is also an important innovation in the personal computer industry. Intel founder Gordon Moore called it "as important as the microprocessor itself in the development of the microcomputer industry."Until the 1980s, EPROM was still Intel's most profitable product. After inventing EPROM, Forman left Intel and began teaching electrical engineering at the University of Technology in Kumasi, Ghana; he returned to Intel in 1973, but by this time he had a long-term vision: to return to Israel and build a high-tech research center there.

1974, Froman helped Intel establish a small chip design center in Haifa - this is also Intel's first design center outside the United States. After returning to Israel, Fromman taught at the School of Applied Sciences, Hebrew University in Jerusalem, while serving as an advisor to Intel. In 1985, after negotiating with the Israeli government on the establishment of a semiconductor factory in Jerusalem, Intel established its first branch outside the United States - Intel Israel; Fromman immediately decided to leave Hebrew University and become the general manager of Intel Israel.
Today in 2022, Intel Israel has become the company's global wireless technology research and development headquarters. It has developed the company's Cunchi mobile computing technology to power laptops and advanced microprocessor products. It is also the main center of chip manufacturing. In 2008, the company opened its second semiconductor factory in Kiryat Gat—a $3.5 billion investment and a 7,000 employee base. In 2007, Intel's total exports to Israel were US$1.4 billion, accounting for about 8.5% of Israel's total exports to the electronics and information industries. Froman retired from Intel in 2001 and in 2018 he was appointed as a researcher at the Museum of Computer History, and he is also a member of the Israeli Academy of Sciences and Humanities.

1986 March 28, 2019: Computers enter the field of AIDS research

Source: wikipedia
March 28, 1986 In the early progress of treating the AIDS epidemic, a team from Roche Laboratory, New Jersey published an article in the journal Science, discussing the theoretical basis of HIV protease molecules, which immediately made headlines. Computers have been investing in medical research for many years, and designing molecules targeting viruses is one of many ways drug researchers use computers.
HIV continues to mutate in the infected person, during which time the source and timeline of the infection can be determined based on its changing genetic status. At the same time, current computer simulations have been able to successfully infer and predict the spread of HIV from the data. HIV's ability to mutate rapidly is one of the main reasons why vaccines are unable to overcome it, but it is also valuable for epidemiology research. According to epidemiological data, HIV infection is associated with blood, mother-to-child transmission and sexual contact. These scientists used phylogenetic analysis to study complex evolutionary relationships between cells, thereby further estimating how HIV spreads.
The power of computers has also played an important role in the current epidemic, and the epidemic itself has had an unprecedented impact on the computer industry; during the epidemic, when most people's attention is shifted online, Internet technology has been widely used; technology products "dataization", online education study abroad, merchants' transition to online, medical automation... What do you think will be the development trend of the computer industry in the future? Welcome to share the development direction you think is possible in the comment section.
