Silashanren Huayi is one of the " Yangzhou Eight Eccentrics " in the Qing Dynasty. Its style has a certain influence on flower and bird paintings in the Qing Dynasty and modern times. In the calligraphy and painting exhibition "Famous Products Focus - Huayi Sketch Book" launched by the Palace Museum in Taipei from July this year, 24 Huayi's humorous and vivid sketches of people and animals appear on paper.
Huayi lost school when she was young because of poverty. After she was 22 years old, she left home to go to Hangzhou to seek development. Under the influence of local literati and famous scholars, he devoted himself to studying poetry, calligraphy and painting, and became an all-round artist with both literary literacy. For decades, he often returned to Hangzhou and Yangzhou, relying on inkstone fields to make a living. Until he died in Hangzhou in the 20th year of Qianlong (1756), he always created his works. Literary works include "Li Gu Collection" and "Xie Tanguan Poetry Collection" passed down. Hua Yi's painting skills were initially influenced by Yun Shouping, Zhu Da, Shi Tao, and Chen Hongshou. Later, he came up with new ideas and successfully created personal characteristics. Hua Yi's teacher and friend Xu Fengji (1655-1740) once praised him as "the combination of literature and quality and can surpass the edges." A picture of "Elephant Camel" on display in
depicts an elephant looking at each other, as if whispering, or wanting to fight. There is a boy on the back of the elephant. The painting method has the meaning of Chen Hongshou, which is full of ancient meaning, but also has a lifelike interest. In the other picture of "Frog War", four or five frogs are depicted by the pond, either confronting or jumping for support. The background is briefly covered by smudges and line drawings, which further highlights the dynamic feeling of frog war. It can be seen that Hua Yi is still childish in his twilight years.
Huayi's flower and bird paintings are the most famous. He absorbed the strengths of Chen Chun, , Zhou Zhimeng, and Yun Shouping of the Qing Dynasty, forming a small freehand technique that is both skilled in writing. He is good at capturing the natural interests in natural creatures and people's real and delicate experiences, integrating the moving postures of flowers and birds and rich and healthy interests in their feelings, creating a vivid and colorful image. In terms of painting, it has both the subtle nature of the detailed description and the simple and vividness of the brush and ink. The delicate and fluffy hairs of birds are revealed. This fresh, handsome, casual and sparse flower and bird painting style has had a certain impact on later generations. The "Sketch Book" has not signed the year. The Taipei Forbidden City believes that the judgment of comprehensive painting, calligraphy style and seal elements should be based on Hua Yi's late work after the age of 60. The pictures are painted in a wide range of subjects, including figures, birds, grass and insects, animals and aquariums. Although there is no connection between them, the image is humorous and vivid, with full expressions, and it fully expresses one's own temperament, which is much different from purely imitating the realization of objects.
"Huayi Sketch Book" is a wonderful masterpiece stored by Lan Qianshan Pavilion in the Palace Museum in Taipei. It is divided into 2 volumes, each with twelve pictures. Hua Yi's original name was Hua Desong, and later changed his name to Yu, with his courtesy name Qiuyue. He was born in Shanghang, Fujian in the 20th year of Kangxi (1682). Because Shanghang was an ancient place in Silla, although Hua Yi lived in another place for a long time in the future, he still called himself "Silla Mountain".
