Jamie, the largest incubator in Taiwan and the venture capital partner of AppWorks, accepted an exclusive interview and talked about his views on the development of the Internet economy between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait and the development pace of the new media industry! How do you view the development trend of mobile Internet on both sides of the Taiwan Strait?
If you remember, when the Internet booming was the first time, companies and manufacturers couldn't wait to build an official website, but consumers hadn't started surfing the Internet yet.
When I started my business in 1999, the number of people online in Taiwan was about 30 to 4 million, and everyone was already very excited. The popularity of smartphones in Taiwan is more than 17 million, but the proportion of corporate website "Mobile Friendly" is less than half. In particular, less than 1% of companies have their own APPs to provide consumer services.
This is like a consumer bought a TV at home, but there are not many programs to watch.
You can ask your Taiwanese friends around you, and no one is satisfied with the choice on his mobile phone! Everyone wants more and better APPs. The problem is not that they can’t be found, but that’s not. For example, who doesn’t want to pay with your mobile phone when taking a bus? You can't even pay with your mobile phone when you go to 7-11!
, which is almost the first time in human history, and some consumers adopt a platform faster than companies.
All mobile phone users are not satisfied now. This is a common situation around the world, not just Taiwan. The only thing is that the mainland market is faster, because there are now 600 million mobile phone users in mainland China, which is more than 300 million to 400 million people who use PCs to access the Internet. Therefore, all network companies in the mainland are now developing Mobile.
Taiwan and the United States, Mobile will become mainstream in two years! Mobile takes up people's time and will exceed everything else, including buying things through actions and obtaining content, and other things will become non-mainstream. In terms of an Internet service, most of the traffic and turnover come from Mobile, which will be established in two years. Next, we will obtain service products through Mobile, which is also established by the so-called O2O.
Battery technology will begin to improve in two years, so many Internet of Things products will become better. It can be imagined that the Apple Watch will not connect to the Internet through the iPhone in two years. It is a bit like the iPod was connected to the computer at the beginning, but later the iPhone cuts the wire.
Therefore, in three years, the Internet of Things will become an independent industry, not an accessory.
How do you view the development of new media?
For new media teams, no burden is the most important thing. For example, newspapers want to transform, although their turnover has dropped by 10% every year, they are still hundreds of millions! Then I can't throw it away! The reporter still needs to help the newspaper produce content, and then the content he produces is used first by the newspaper. After half a day, it is placed on the website and then on the APP. However, the newspaper only appears once a day, but the APP users are 24 hours a day, so the APP should be the most preferred, and then the website, and then the newspaper.
Because newspapers are the largest source of turnover, my employees cannot help but serve it, and this is the biggest burden.
I never think "new media" is a word. You have read it on Facebook. Who wakes up in the morning and says, "Do I want to see a new media?" No, but what do they want? They want information, knowledge, and content.
New media is a word invented by traditional media themselves. For Facebook, Taiwan, Taiwan, no one is looking for new media. What they want is content and knowledge that can make them feel happy, fulfilled, inspired and learn, which is so simple.
How do you view the phenomenon of "Wanjun" in Taiwan?
Wanjun, like New Media, is both a "pseudo-issue".
Wanjun is called by people from the old media! But who is Wanjun in Taiwan? It's just 16 million Facebook users.
In fact, if there is a white hat, there will be a black hat, and the black hat will always exist! But as the power of social media becomes greater and greater, the value of the Black Hat will become increasingly difficult to show. That is to say, sending a group of people to help me spread a message, and if the news is not shared again, it will never spread.
When this message is shared again, it means that the message itself is recognized, so it is not whether the first wave of dissemination has received the money, but that the message itself is recognized.
If this is the case, those who take the money to spread the message only slightly accelerated the spread of the message, but it was not because "they" made the message spread.
"They" cannot change the message itself and is not recognized, because people who are spreading the second layer must first agree with the message before they can share it. Even if you hire 100 Wanjun on the first floor, and 10,000 people will spread, there is actually no way to affect these 10,000 people agree with a certain message.

The competition in the Internet industry is much greater than that in the entity!
For example, I opened a Xiaolong bakery on this street. If there is no Xiaolong bakery within a radius of 300 meters, I am just a local monopoly. As long as my Xiaolong bakery is not made too unpalatable, in fact, people who are lazy to walk away will come to me to eat Xiaolong bakery.
But there is no local monopoly on the Internet. Everyone competes on 250 million websites and 2 million APPs, so consumers don’t like your service, and there is a next one to change at any time. What’s more important is that transformation is actually very difficult. If A is not good at doing service A, there are thousands of competitors when switching to B service.
How do you run your blog now? What new directions are there now?
The public is getting faster and faster, and likes content that is quickly satisfied, but my target readers have never been the public, so I have never cared about the public's preferences. My articles are written for entrepreneurs and Internet people.
In addition to my own "thought lifting", I also want to provide entrepreneurs and online people with useful information and content that can inspire them. Now it seems that based on my website traffic and the reaction of everyone in the fan group, there is still a group of people who need such things, and that is the person I want to serve.
So I don’t open Din Tai Fung because the public likes to eat vegetarian food, because the people we serve are different.
As an opinion leader on the Internet, have you ever been attacked?
Objectively speaking, my website and blog have gone through two stages.
In the early stage, I was relatively young and frivolous, liked to write offensive articles, and liked to criticize current affairs. Then this will attract many opposition people to debate with me. I think what I discussed makes sense, because I am a "PTT generation", so I am very used to fighting with others, so I will come out to fight with others.
I used to say that Taiwan’s design exhibition was very bad, a pathological or problem in an industry, but later I also found that saying that would not make it better.
is now because I am older, and I feel that if I want to influence and create changes, "the north wind is useless, I have to be the sun." So if I want to influence and change, I will use positive discussions and positive cases to make a change, rather than the north wind.
When you want to influence a person, you can scold him or guide him. In fact, PTT is very used to scolding people, but you will feel that saying that it is scolding people is just to vent yourself, and the other party will not listen.
Therefore, in the past two or three years, I have mostly used positive discussions: this is done abroad, this is what others do, and will it be better if we try to do this?
This leads to much fewer people leaving messages to fight me! In fact, I don’t delete the message in the first one, and I will respond to almost every second one, so I am busy now, so some of them will not respond until weekends and holidays.
is also because of my current writing style, so there are many fewer people coming to fight with me. Actually, I like feedback very much. Even if your tone of speech is a bit irritating, I will still clear the tone and hear what you want to say.
I don't think any idea is perfect, and any idea has its advantages and disadvantages. The idea I proposed must have shortcomings that I did not expect. The feedback from netizens can let me know the loopholes in thinking, and then make my next thought more complete. So I actually like to give me feedback, so that my thinking will become more comprehensive and complete.
I regard every feedback as an opportunity to learn.
If everyone thinks I write well and like it, then I have not learned or made progress. I don’t think that making a blog is a symbol of authority, and then my authority cannot be challenged. I think that making a blog is just a symbol of throwing bricks and attracting jade. I'll throw out a topic and everyone will discuss it.
