Smartphones are becoming stronger and stronger, but in sharp contrast, the battery life experience is stagnant. This has also been criticized by many users, but this situation is very hopeful that it will be completely changed next year. Currently, mobile phone manufacturers such as Apple, , Samsung , etc. are preparing a brand new L-shaped battery structure. What exactly is this structure? Xiao Lei (WeChat ID: leitech) will give you an in-depth analysis today. Why is the battery life of
always unsatisfactory for mobile phones nowadays?
A long time ago, most mobile phones adopted a detachable battery design, so many people could not feel the importance of battery life. The phone is out of power, just replace it with a spare battery. However, now 99% of mobile phones use integrated bodies, which means that adding physical equipment is no longer feasible. But at the same time, hardware performance is constantly increasing, causing the machine to consume more and more power.
Since the battery can no longer be replaced, the manufacturers have changed another idea, which is to make mobile phones more power-saving. At the software level, it is nothing more than optimizing the background, strengthening power saving mode, system optimization, etc.; at the hardware level, power saving is to choose components with lower power consumption. At the same time, increase the battery capacity of the mobile phone to a certain extent to ensure long battery life.
Although the above power saving strategies are indeed helpful to improve battery life from a certain perspective, their implementation methods are not ideal enough, and even have many disadvantages. For example, simply increasing the battery capacity is usually only available on a thousand yuan machine, and flagships will not adopt this strategy, because an excessively large battery will make the body thicker, which is not conducive to appearance and feel.
Therefore, simply put, there are two main reasons why the battery life of today is unsatisfactory: First, there are no breakthrough changes in the battery material and charging method; second, the internal structure of the mobile phone as a precision electronic device is similar, and the location and space left for the battery are extremely limited. The structure of
will undergo a huge change, leaving more space for the battery
. Among the above two reasons, the first problem is currently difficult to break through. On the one hand, the possibility of a breakthrough in the short term is not high; on the other hand, although wireless charging currently supports fast charging, it is still a fantasy to achieve air-to-air charging.
Therefore, the second problem has become a new focus for a few manufacturers. The idea is to completely change the previous internal structure of traditional mobile phones and introduce larger batteries. To this end, manufacturers will make the following two major adjustments to the internal structure:
1. The overall structure has been changed from flat to stacked
. Students who have seen the disassembly know that the motherboard of the mobile phone and all components are laid flat in the shell. This kind of tiled structure can make all the parts in the body clear at a glance. Currently, the smartphones on the market use any-layer HDI (any layer high-density connection board) motherboards, and the space is basically relatively fixed.
In the second half of last year, some motherboard manufacturers such as Jingshuo and Xinxing said that the future trend of motherboard structure of mobile phones should be a brand new carrier-like design, namely Substrate-like PCB, or SLP. SLP motherboards will adopt a stacked design, which will reduce the space occupied by chips, DRAM and other components through a larger number of hierarchical structures.
Currently, SLP carrier boards have begun mass production, so there is no big problem for mobile phones to adopt this structure in the future. In addition to the technology owned by Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers, Samsung Motor has also solved the packaging technology problem of SLP structure, so there is no doubt that Samsung mobile phones will adopt this design in the future.
2. After introducing a special-shaped battery represented by L-shaped, the space for
is freed up, the next step is to stuff a larger battery. Traditionally shaped batteries all adopt a conventional square design, but this type of battery and SLP structure are not quickly matched, which often leads to an empty area under the components.
So, there is a saying that Apple has adopted a simple and crude solution on the upcoming iPhone 8: first stuff a battery A with a larger size and capacity, and then stuff a smaller battery B. The two together power the phone, which is said to extend the battery life of half a day.
However, this simple and crude "1+1=2" is not integrated enough, and it is not a long-term solution after all, so Apple's attention is aimed at the new product of the alien battery.
Last time, Xiao Lei (WeChat ID: leitech) introduced everyone the knowledge of the unique full screen. Similarly, the shape of the special-shaped battery is actually different from that of traditional batteries. Currently, this type of product is represented by L-shaped.
Just like Tetris, the L-shaped battery has better integration and higher production costs than the combination of "large and small batteries", and can tightly surround components such as the motherboard. Of course, the large and small batteries of the iPhone 8 can also be regarded as "L-shaped" batteries when spliced together, but the real L-shaped battery adopts an integrated design.
L type design may be exclusively supplied by LG Chem . Next year, Apple and Samsung will rush to use
. The company that currently spends the most effort on special-shaped batteries is LG Chem. In contrast, companies such as Samsung SDI focus more on traditional battery design. In fact, this is understandable, because LG always likes to make some weird things, and old users have long been used to it.
But because of this, LG Chem will become the supplier of Apple and Samsung's flagship mobile phone batteries next year. LG Chem has technical background in the field of special-shaped batteries and is very willing to invest money in this project. According to the leak, Apple iPhone 9 and Samsung Galaxy S9 may use L-shaped batteries made by LG Chemical.
Some Korean media reported that Apple has signed an agreement with LG to choose the latter as the exclusive battery supplier for the new iPhone next year. On Samsung, the whistleblower @i Bingyun also disclosed that since the Galaxy S9 also adopts SLP design, it has to reach out to buy batteries from its old rivals. After all, its own company does not make this thing.
Both Apple and Samsung prefer L-type batteries because this type of battery design has several advantages that traditional batteries do not have:
One is a larger capacity. It is said that the battery capacity of iPhones using L-type batteries will surge by about 30%, which may exceed 3500mAh, while the battery capacity of iPhone 7 Plus is 2900mAh. According to the level of power consumption of iOS, its battery life will be very outstanding.
Another is faster charging speed. Although Apple has released fast charging on iPad Pro, the output power of the iPhone is still pitifully low and is as slow as a snail. The L-shaped battery can make charging faster, and with wireless charging, it will also go to a higher level in the charging experience.
It can be seen that the SLP structure and L-shaped battery will become the standard configuration for high-end smartphones next year. Once Apple and Samsung adopt this design, domestic manufacturers may also actively follow up. The battery life problem of mobile phones that have plagued consumers for a long time is finally going to be solved. What do you think?
