At around 10 a.m., Xu Dazhe, Mao Weiming, Li Weiwei, Wulan, Yang Zhengwu, Wang Keying, Hu Biao, Huang Lanxiang, Wang Shuangquan, Xie Jianhui, Zhang Jianfei, Zhang Hongsen, Li Dianxun, Wang Cheng, Wu Guiying, Liu Lianyu and other provincial leaders and old comrades walked slowly to Comrade Yuan Longping's body and stood in silence amid the sound of sorrow and music, bowed three times to Comrade Yuan Longping's body, shook hands one by one with his relatives, and extended deep condolences.

Comrade Yuan Longping is from De'an, Jiangxi Province. He was born in a family of intellectuals in Beijing in September 1930. From August 1949 to August 1953, he studied crops in the Department of Agriculture, Southwest Agricultural University. From August 1953 to January 1971, he served as a teacher at Anjiang Agricultural School in Hunan Province.From January 1971 to June 1984, he served as a researcher at the hybrid rice of Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (promoted to researcher in September 1978). From June 1984 to January 1988, he served as director of Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center. From January 1988 to May 1995, he served as Vice Chairman of the Hunan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Director of Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center, and Honorary Dean of Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences. From May 1995 to January 2016, he served as Vice Chairman of the Hunan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (during this period: from May 1995 to August 2015, he served as Director of Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center and Director of the National Hybrid Rice Engineering Technology Research Center). He was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1995. In 2007, he was elected as a foreign academician of the American Academy of Sciences.

Comrade Yuan Longping is the pioneer and leader in the field of hybrid rice research and is known as the "father of hybrid rice". He invented the "three-line method" indica hybrid rice technology, created the "two-line method" hybrid rice technology, established the hybrid rice discipline, cultivated a large number of hybrid rice experts and technical backbones, and established and improved a complete set of hybrid rice theory and application technology systems. The resolution passed by the Sixth Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee of the Communist Party of China lists the cultivation and promotion of indica hybrid rice, together with hydrogen bomb tests and successful satellite recycling, as well as important achievements in my country's science and technology. General Secretary Xi Jinping has met with Comrade Yuan Longping four times and fully affirmed the significant contributions made by Yuan Longping's team. In 2018, Comrade Yuan Longping was awarded the title of "Pioneer of Reform" and in 2019, he was awarded the "Medal of the Republic".
Comrade Yuan Longping is the first generation of outstanding scientific and technological workers trained by New China and a glorious role model for Chinese intellectuals. As an agricultural scientist, he has been committed to the scientific research of hybrid rice for 70 years. With his tenacious perseverance and determination, he is devoted to the scientific research of hybrid rice. According to statistics, since the hybrid rice was promoted in 1976, the cumulative planting area has reached 9 billion mu, and the cumulative output of more than 800 billion kilograms of rice has increased. The grain that increases production every year due to the cultivation of hybrid rice can feed an additional 80 million people.
Yuan Longping has made outstanding contributions to world food security. He pursued the two dreams of "Dream of Satisfaction under the Grain" and "Dream of Hybrid Rice Covering the Global" throughout his life, and regarded "developing hybrid rice and benefiting the people of the world" as his lifelong career. There are more than 40 countries around the world introducing hybrid rice, and the planting area outside China reaches 8 million hectares.
Comrade Yuan Longping is a member of the Standing Committee of the Fifth National People's Congress and a member of the Standing Committee of the Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
Comrade Yuan Longping’s greatest contribution in his life was, first, he broke through the constraints of traditional theory and invented hybrid rice; second, he created the hybrid rice discipline and built a theoretical system of hybrid rice; third, he overcome difficulties and promoted the application of hybrid rice technology, and made great contributions to my country’s food security; fourth, he was committed to hybrid rice going to the world, demonstrating his responsibility for mankind’s victory over hunger.
Comrade Yuan Longping's life is a life of standing with the Communist Party of China through thick and thin, a life of courage to innovate and pursue truth, a life of loving the motherland and caring for the people, a life of caring for the world and benefiting mankind, and a life of indifferent to fame and fortune and selfless dedication.
