Just now, Times Higher Education ranking (THE) released the 2023 world university rankings!
THE ranking is one of the four internationally recognized as the rankings of world universities, and can better reflect a university's academic strength in the international field.
This year, 1,799 universities in 104 countries and regions were on the list, an increase of 137 from last year, which is the largest in this ranking in 19 years.

THE ranking is based on teaching, research and citation as the main indicators, and the three items account for 30% of the weight respectively.
In teaching, the ranking mainly refers to the reputation survey results provided by peer scholars, as well as teacher-student ratio, graduate-undergraduate ratio, doctoral-academic staff ratio, and institutional profit.
In the research, the refined indicators provide the university reputation (18%), research income (6%) and research productivity (6%) by the survey.
School paper citation data is provided by Esevier ELSEvier, involving 15.5 million journal articles, article reviews, conference proceedings, books and book chapters published in the five years from 2017 to 2021.
In addition, some universities will not enter THE ranking:
- does not teach undergraduate degrees (so the famous London Business School does not appear in the ranking);
- scientific research results do not reach 1,000 articles (2012-2016, and no less than 150 articles per year);
Ranking results
UK Oxford University topped the list for the seventh consecutive year, Cambridge University ranking continued to rise by 2 places, ranking 3rd in the world, Imperial College entered the top ten this year.
Among the top 100 universities, 34 are from the United States, 10 are from the United Kingdom, 7 are from Australia, and 2 are from Singapore .
The top 100 British universities, in addition to Imperial College and London School of Economics, LSE, are mainly comprehensive universities.

In terms of mainland China, 7 universities including Tsinghua University (16), Peking University (17), Fudan University (51), Shanghai Jiaotong University (52), Zhejiang University (67), China University of Science and Technology (74), and Nanjing University (95) have entered the top 100.
Hong Kong students in the top 100, namely Hong Kong University (31), Hong Kong Chinese University (45), Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (58), Hong Kong Polytechnic University (79) and Hong Kong City University (99).
Why is THE ranking much worse than QS
In the 2023 QS ranking, 17 British universities entered the top 100, while in the THE ranking, only 10 entered the top 100.
This is why many students often look at the ranking and see doubts about life: the same ranking, how can the result be so much different? Which one is more scientific and credible?
In fact, after reasonable indicator selection and weight allocation, QS and THE are both desirable, but there are differences in focus between the two. Relatively speaking, QS rankings focus more on reputation, including academic reputation and employer reputation, which actually reflects the employment and employment level of graduates.
THE attaches more importance to academic and scientific research strength, and gives paper citation weight 10% more than QS. In addition, in terms of teaching, THE also refers to the university reputation, that is, the evaluation of teaching quality by scholars, while QS completely regards the teacher-student ratio (weight 20%) as the most effective alternative indicator to measure teaching quality.
