Born in troubled times, when you have lofty ambitions
Time back to 1911, Jiang Shangqing was born in a family of traditional Chinese medicine in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, ranking sixth among brothers and sisters. My father is a famous local Chinese medicine doctor. He not only rejuvenated his skills and was exquisite in art, but also had great achievements in literary music, poetry, songs, etc. In such a scholarly family, the brother and sister are quite accomplished in literature.
The eldest brother Jiang Shijun has excellent academic performance since childhood, loves writing, and especially likes classic Chinese studies. He is a classmate with the famous writer Zhu Ziqing. The Jiang family and the Zhu family are family friends. The father described in Zhu Ziqing's " Back View " is Jiang Shijun's most respected elder besides his father.
Jiang Shijun is also Comrade Jiang's biological father. Because he could not bear to die young, he adopted Comrade Jiang, the 12-year-old Comrade Jiang to the name of Jiang Shangqing and his wife according to the customs of his hometown.

But when he was young, he did not have the ambition. In 1927, he joined the Communist Youth League and determined to become a useful person to the Party and the country.
Jiang's father was open-minded and saw that Jiang Shihou was not a thing in the pond, so he named him Jiang Shangqing from the Tang poem "There are no people in the song, and the peaks on the river are green." He did not disappoint his father's name change. He not only achieved excellent academic results, but also actively participated in various patriotic student movements, which was very appealing among young people.

Jiang Shangqing led the students of Shanghai University and a group of advanced young people to establish a series of newspapers and magazines that promote Marxism, actively promote communist thoughts, use pens as guns, criticize reactionaries, widely spread revolutionary ideas among the masses, organize mobile propaganda groups, and mobilize the people to participate in the anti-Japanese war.
But as his influence in the youth group grew stronger and stronger, he was soon targeted by the Kuomintang authorities.
Two years in prison, and his ambition to serve the country remains unabated. In December 1928, Jiang Shangqing was arrested by the Kuomintang at a revolutionary propaganda conference. The reactionaries detained him in Suzhou Siqian Street Prison on the grounds of inciting student movements. He suffered various tortures in prison, but he still had ambitions after being severely tortured.
"If patriotism is guilty, I am proud!"
Under the dim light, the Kuomintang authorities glared at him with a vicious face, and repeatedly questioned him with the sound of a whip. I thought this would scare the young boy who was only 17 years old, but this young man gritted his teeth and withstood the interrogation time and time again.
In prison, he did not forget to promote the ideas of Marxism and the Communist Revolution, encouraged each other with a group of patriotic young people, and wrote down his ambitions on the wall of the prison to inspire his determination to revolution.
Half a year later, Jiang Shangqing was eventually acquitted because the reactionary authorities were unable to convict him, and coupled with the active defense of the famous lawyer Hu Xianbo. After experiencing various tortures in prison, he needed help even when he was released from prison, and fell ill.
After being released from prison, Jiang Shangqing's revolutionary will was not shaken at all. He joked to his friends: "I am honored to be in jail to save the country at the age of 17." Soon, he devoted himself to the revolutionary work again.
Due to this experience of being imprisoned, Yangzhou Middle School, who had been studying in the past, refused to accept Jiang Shangqing's return to campus. Under the arrangement of the party organization, he relied on to the Department of Literature of Shanghai University of Arts.
Here, Jiang Shangqing met his lifelong close friend Deng Ken, who is Deng Gong’s younger brother. They have similar aspirations and share common revolutionary ideals. During his school days, Jiang Shangqing also founded the "New Century Weekly" to promote advanced communist ideas. This publication later became our party's propaganda base in Yangzhou.
In August 1929, Jiang Shangqing officially joined the Communist Party of China at Shanghai University of Arts . In Shanghai, he witnessed the tragic situation of workers being oppressed. As a Communist Party member, he was determined to double his investment in the revolutionary struggle and contribute to the establishment of a new world.
In December, Jiang Shangqing attended the underground party organization meeting in Shanghai. Due to the chaos in the current situation, the meeting was held secretly. Halfway through the meeting, a large group of Kuomintang policemen suddenly broke in with guns. With the experience of being arrested before, Jiang Shangqing stepped forward and blocked the front to cover the important members of the organization's organization leaving the venue smoothly, and he was unfortunately arrested and imprisoned again.
Korean reactionaries were unscrupulous and attacked Jiang Shangqing. In the cold winter, he only wore a single clothes, and pots of ice water poured down Jiang Shangqing's head, which made him suffer from severe asthma later.
In December 1930, Jiang Shangqing was finally released from prison with the rescue of patriots from many parties. Jiang Shangqing's revolutionary belief has never been shaken at all after a year of torture and forced confession. Although he was tortured physically, his revolutionary belief has become stronger in his heart.
In Tilanqiao Prison, he still actively engaged in literary creation, writing poems full of fighting will such as "The Indifferent World", "Hunger is a Weapon", and "I Come Here Again", which inspired a large number of aspiring young people to actively participate in the revolutionary work.
After gaining two prison experiences, Jiang Shangqing has a higher understanding of revolutionary work. Not only should we do a good job in publicity, but we should also pay attention to measures in terms of confidentiality. Since then, he has studied a series of ways to keep the meeting confidential, and for a long time to come, their actions have not been discovered by the Kuomintang reactionaries.
After the full outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War , due to the fall of Shanghai and other cities, Jiang Shangqing lost contact with the party organization. He immediately decided to establish a mobile propaganda team of the exile association to support the front line of the anti-Japanese war, and to promote revolutionary ideas for the people along the way, which was a revolutionary team that was later called the "Jiangwen Group" by the people of the Yangtze River.
"Jiang Wentuan" promoted the anti-Japanese national spirit among the people through easy-to-understand methods such as speeches, dramas, and posters. His wife Wang Zhelan also took off her dowry and supported him.

The performances arouse the people's anti-Japanese and national salvation sentiments again and again, and shouts of "defeating Japanese imperialism" sounded out of the audience. 1938, the "Jiang Wen Group" arrived at Dabie Mountains , and the number of members of the group had reached 30. Jiang Shangqing also found the party organization and once again actively participated in revolutionary work.

In fact, Sheng Zijin also joined the Communist Party of China. When he learned about Jiang Shangqing's real purpose, he not only did not expose it, but secretly helped Jiang Shangqing collect information, and even appointed him as the secretary of the special branch, allowing him to stay with him to work.
During this period, Jiang Shangqing continued to instill the revolutionary ideas of the Communist Party in him, which allowed Sheng Zijin to successfully reach a unified front with the Communist Party to fight against Japan. It can be said that Jiang Shangqing made an indelible contribution to the preliminary preparations for the anti-Japanese war in northeast Anhui.
Jiang Shangqing actively promoted cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party in northeast Anhui and introduced Zhang Aiping to Sheng Zijin. Zhang Aiping was the director of the New Fourth Army's Office in Northeast Anhui at that time. The two fell in love with each other and reached a cooperation in joint combat.
