Austria-Hungarian Concession in Tianjin was established in 1902. By the end of World War I in 1918, Austria-Hungarian Concession in disintegrated, and this concession was also taken back. 17 years have not been long, and the buildings in the Ao Concession are mainly alleys, and there are not many small Western-style buildings. Later, with the changes of the times, the buildings in the Yuan Ao Concession gradually became submerged in privately built houses.
It was not until 2003 that Hebei District renovated and demolished the surrounding area of Haihe . When the houses on Jianguo Road were completely demolished, a small red-topped western-style building was exposed. This is the confirmed site of the Austro-Hungarian Empire Club, and the former site of the Austro-Hungarian Empire Consulate was also discovered in this way.
Today, this building stands on the south gate of Ruihai Mingyuan Community, opposite the Jianguo Road from the former site of Dongtianxian Opera. This is a two-story brick and wood structure with a basement, with a high red tiled slope roof, and the attic reveals a wide dormitory window . It has a strong Austrian style. Looking at the old photos, you can see that the building originally had a wooden exterior corridor.
The former site of the Austro-Hungarian Empire Club was repaired in 2005. The restoration project removed some original components, but some structures were not restored, such as the tower on the west side. Now this building is a clean water brick wall, and each window has square window covers, with eaves and a large slope, making it beautiful and elegant overall.
In that year, this was a place for staff of the Austro-Hungarian Consulate to stay and recreate. After the Ao Concession was taken back, it was operated by the Dabei Hotel (located in the Japanese Concession). Mei Lanfang and other Peking Opera also stayed here when they came to Tianjin for a performance. After liberation, this place was transformed into a hotel, then a warehouse, and then a tube building . It was discovered and repaired in 2003. (Zin 302, 2022.10.14)
