Under Chinese-old railway as the steel bond
Use aesthetic lens to record the great era
A documentary worthy of attention "The Road to Friendship"
"Let's Finding" Director's Notes:
Episode 1 "Let's Finding" recalls the friendly history of China and Laos sharing weal and woe and helping each other, and recalls the 12 years of spring and autumn that the China-Laos Railway has gone through from the project preparation in 2010 to the official opening of traffic in 2021. For thousands of years, the people of China and Laos have been constantly seeking a path of opening up to the outside world and mutual learning, which has led to the China-Laos railway that breaks the barriers between the two countries and goes to both directions. This journey of finding a way is a vivid witness to the long-lasting and strengthening friendship between China and Laos.
(Dianyue Railway Herringbone Bridge)
Dianyue Railway is China's first international meter-gauge railway . It has a history of more than 100 years since it opened to traffic in 1910. On the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway, there is an herringbridge called the throat main road. To photograph this herringbone bridge, we contacted its guardian, railway policeman Wang Qinghua. We hope to explore some historical fragments of Yunnan's exploration of the outside world through breaking the blockade.
Herringbone bridge is in the deep mountains and cars cannot reach it directly. The crew had to carry the machine and walk along the railway tracks. When passing through the tunnel, they could see traces of burning black on the walls by trains when kerosene was burned. An hour later, we finally arrived at the dormitory of the Bridgekeeper on the side of the railway. On the exterior wall of the cottage, there is a slogan "Man is on the bridge". The bridge guards usually live in this small house in the mountains.
(Bridge guards patrol)
The work of the bridge guards is both lonely and boring. Every rail and every bolt must be reinforced and replaced in time. After a century of storms, the parts on the body have been replaced countless times, but it is precisely because of this meticulous maintenance that it has been able to stand still to this day.
During the shooting, railway policeman Wang Qinghua told us the story of his voluntary application to be transferred to the Herringbone Bridge after his father passed away and continued to protect the Herringbone Bridge. When he was moved, the seven-foot man shed tears. Inadvertently, his father's perseverance also became his perseverance.
(年年多年水水水水 ruins)
In the process of tracing the history of road search, there is a story about a railway, which is the most regrettable. It is hidden deep in the mountains of Chuxiong Lianxiang Pass. It was once built by the whole country, but was eventually blown up - it is the "Yunming-Burma Railway". The only few huge bridge piers that have remained now have been surrounded by mountains, forests and fields over the years. The mountain wind is gentle, like a whisper of a railway, telling us young people about its glory nearly a hundred years ago.
(Myanmar Railway Pier)
Standing on the abandoned railway bridge, looking away from the distance, opposite the mountain, modern high-speed rail trains are whistling by, forming a sharp contrast between the two. In just a few decades, the transportation construction of our country has undergone earth-shaking changes, and several bridge piers left in the deep mountains have become monuments of the past and witnesses to the future.
(building roads with old age)
There is also a little-known story in the process of filming "Looking for the Road", which is not yet well-known, but is worth remembering.
As early as 60 years ago, the Chinese government sent a road construction force of more than 110,000 people to build the first highway in China for Laos . These passers-builders have devoted their youth in Laos for sixteen years and are now over 70 years old.
Every year, they gather at the memorial hall for road construction in Lincang, recalling the years when everyone worked hard in a foreign country. Among this group of road builders are engineering corps , surveyor , medical corps, translator, and art corps .The old people excitedly told the story of that year to the engineering equipment and instruments they had used. While building roads for Laos, our road builders used their free time to open schools for Lao villagers along the route. The medical soldiers also took the initiative to take on the task of seeing Lao villagers and participated in the connection with the birth of children. He even taught each other the techniques of growing vegetables and raising pigs with Lao villagers. Over the past sixteen years, our road builders have established a deep friendship with the Lao people.
When talking about those comrades who died in a foreign country for road construction, everyone fell into silence. At that time, Laos was experiencing the destruction of war. Under dangerous conditions, 269 Chinese road builders were unable to return to their motherland.
(Married cemetery of the martyrs' cemetery of the Chinese aid to build roads in Laos)
In Chuanfu Province, Laos, we interviewed a Lao friend who guarded the Chinese martyrs' cemetery. He told us, "There are three Chinese martyrs' cemetery of the Chinese aid to build roads in Laos. China and Laos organize personnel to pay homage every year, hoping that Laos can Remember this history of friendly exchanges between China and Laos. "
(a large number of aviation bombs fell on Laos' territory)
During the Vietnam War , the United States dropped a large number of aviation bombs in Laos, and these bombs still deeply affect the production and life of local residents. As early as the beginning of the construction of the China-Laos Railway, the Lao Ministry of Defense sent a mine demining team to clear the mines along the railway. There were even volunteer mine demining organizations in the local area to protect the construction of the China-Laos Railway.
Due to the epidemic, the crew was unable to go to the mine clearance site to shoot. These precious images were taken by colleagues from Lao State TV station . Only in the returned material can we see the dangers of mine clearance work. The film crew truly realized the Lao people’s expectations for the road and their selfless help to the Chinese builders. This is the most true manifestation of the friendship between China and Laos. The construction of the China-Laos Railway has brought not only convenience of transportation to Laos, but also the desire for development in the hearts of Laos people has taken root and sprouted.
The story of finding the way has come to an end for the time being, but the pace of finding the way will never stop. After participating in the shooting of the China-Laos Railway, we realized that without developed modern transportation, people's travel time will increase multiple times, and "road" is crucial to people's lives. China has grown from a country with no independent right to build roads to the country with the highest high-speed rail operating mileage in the world today, and has embarked on its own development path. Laos has moved from " land-locked country " with no sea outlet to "land united countries" at the Indochina Peninsula center. This development path has taken firm steps along the China-Laos Railway. We are very honored to be the recorder of this pathfinding history and to tell the audience these touching stories through our lens. I hope that through our narrative, we will let everyone remember this road, remember the yesterday that made this road, and work together to look forward to the tomorrow that has changed due to this road.
