3. Life and death struggle
Father Gao Yuncheng, according to the decision of Fufeng underground party organization, arranged by Sun Xianwu to take over the position of mayor of Guotiandu Town. Under the direct leadership of Sun Xianwu, he and Sun Xianwu remained in close contact with him in the face of extremely harsh environment. Sun Xianwu asked my father to "share life and death, share hardships" with him. Sun Xianwu often spent time with my father to find ways to come up with ideas, study countermeasures, work together, cooperate with each other, and overcome difficulties one after another.
In July 1942, his father Gao Yuncheng took over as the mayor of Guomin Tiandu Town. But taking over as the mayor was not smooth sailing. On the day of taking office, there were dangers and disasters, and they fought life and death with various hostile forces.
The old forces who were kicked out of office were unwilling to fail and joined forces with the enemy, special forces, and bandits. On the day my father took office, he posted a slogan on Tiandu Town , proclaiming: "Gao Yuncheng is Sun Xianwu's minion", a "communist bandit member", etc. Then, he burned, tortured and robbed the kind people in the Tiandu area at night, fired guns day and night, creating chaos, disrupting local social order, and threatening the personal safety of his father Gao Yuncheng and Sun Xianwu. The enemy and bandits also accused my father Gao Yuncheng and Sun Xianwu of "disobedience to the people" to the National Baoji Special Office and the Fufeng County Government. My father Gao Yuncheng was the mayor of Zhitiandu Town for three or four months. The National Baoji Special Office and the County Government deliberately appointed two deputy mayors to spy on my father and Sun Xianwu's actions. The National Baoji Special Office and the County Government have continuously sent people to investigate the situation of my father and Sun Xianwu.
Faced with this situation, his father Gao Yuncheng and Sun Xianwu secretly discussed and decided to "siege" the enemies, special forces, bandits and villains in the Tiandu area, carry out necessary tit-for-tat struggles, crack down on their arrogance, and protect the safety of underground party organizations and underground party members. The Kuomintang county government requires food, money, couriers, and dispatches large trucks, and first dispatches to arrest spies, local tyrants, evil gentry, bullies, etc. to destroy the enemy's aura and damage the enemy's muscles and bones.
At the end of the old calendar year in 1942, the Kuomintang County Government sent a bunch of stone military rations to Tiandu Town and ordered them to be handed over to the clearance within a time limit. In order to transfer work, all regions have assigned to the people, using violent means of pulling cows, carrying pots, and lifting quilts, forcibly destroying and harming the masses. My father and Sun Xianwu discussed that the Communist Party cannot do such a thing that harms the people. We must find another way to do it, not only do it, but also do not harm the people. When they learned that a specialist in Baoji had a conflict with a big landlord, they had an idea. It was decided to secretly report a landlord to the National Baoji Special Agency as "anonymous people" and said that his warehouse had more than 2,000 stone wheat. As a result, "there is a clear message" and the Tiandu Town was not affected by the ordinary people.

After his father Gao Yuncheng was appointed mayor of Guomin Tiandu, he went back and forth between Sun Xianwu's home regardless of day and night, "convention" together. In order to strengthen the revolutionary power, Sun Xianwu and my father studied it and planned to arrange Dou Jiefa in Tiandu Town Office, or to be " Guardian " and Dou Zongwen is "Guardian steward". Sun Xianwu said that Dou is a member of the Communist Party. Later, Zhang Mingfa was also arranged to be the "guardian chief". Sun Xianwu said, "Mingfa is our own person." (Zhang Mingfa served as deputy director of the Civil Affairs Bureau of Fufeng County after the liberation) Sun Xianwu and my father studied. In order to cover up the "secret" relationship between my father and him, they had a big quarrel on East Street, Tiandu Town (the main street at that time) to confuse the enemy's spies.
One day in September 1942, Sun Xianwu told my father that the comrades from the border area (Lu Jianren, then deputy secretary of the Guanzhong Prefectural Committee) held a meeting at Yang Yusheng's house in Gouyuan Village. You arranged for people to closely monitor the activities of enemy spies on Tiandu Street. My father made arrangements immediately. But on that day, Zhao, a cooperative instructor of the National Government of Fufeng County, fled to Beixiang from somewhere. When passing by Yang Yusheng's house, he suddenly broke into Yang Yusheng's house and found Sun Xianwu and many underground party members and border leaders who were meeting in the cave. At this time, Zhao ran out of Yang Yusheng's house and shouted while running: "Sun Xianwu is holding a Communist Party meeting!" Comrades Sun Xianwu and others immediately ran out to catch Zhao and locked it in the cave. Unexpectedly, Zhao fled over the window.
Zhao shouted loudly on the way to Tiandu Town: "Sun Xianwu is a Communist bandit!" and so on. I often went to a town in Sun Xianwu's house with my father. I found Zhao at the Dongguan of Tiandu Town. I couldn't stop it and sent someone to report Zhao's situation to my father. My father immediately took someone to intercept Zhao at the gate of Tiandu East City. That day was the market day, and it was difficult to do more people. He called Zhao to the grain store jointly opened by Sun Er (cousin Sun Xianwu) and Wang Ying. First, he persuaded him with kind words, but Zhao yelled at my father as a "communist bandit" and Sun Xianwu's "dog-legged". Several townsmen couldn't stand it, so they stepped forward to control Zhao. After the distribution, my father persuaded Zhao with kind words and brought him to my house. At this time, Sun Xianwu had been to my house for a long time. My father and Sun Xianwu explained to Zhao that Sun Xianwu was splitting up Yang Yusheng's family and calling his family to mediate. Temporarily persuaded Zhao. At this time, Zhao proposed that he wanted to go to Feng Jiu's family, with the intention of asking Feng Jiu to support him. My father was afraid that Zhao would go to the National County Government to report, so he personally sent Zhao to Fengjiu, Fengjia Village, Douhui.
After arriving at Feng’s house, my father first did some "work" for Feng Jiu, and then asked Zhao to come to see Feng Jiu. Feng Jiu persuaded Zhao and said that Sun Xianwu was splitting up Yang Yusheng, so why was Sun Xianwu holding a meeting with the Communist Party? Zhao did not receive support, and after leaving Feng Jiu's family, he was unwilling to give up, so he went to the National Government of Fufeng County to report and expand publicity.
After this incident, my father and Sun Xianwu's situation became tense again. At this time, the enemy and the bandit leader formed a gang and colluded with each other, and constantly accused my father of "restraining the Communist Party" and sheltering the "Communist bandits" Sun Xianwu and Li Tesheng, and suing my father as a "communist bandit" and the "nest" of the "communist bandits". The Military Law Department of the National County Government also kept sending my father a message. Sun Xianwu and my father secretly agreed that if they could not persist, they would prepare to pull out the people and guns of Tiandu Town Office, meet with Zhao Bojing's guerrillas, and fight back to the border area. After Sun Xianwu secretly sent someone to Linyou to contact us, he found out that Zhao Bojing had led the Xifu guerrillas to return to the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region. Since then, the enemy, the special forces and bandits have sent people to assassinate my father and Sun Xianwu in the Tiandu area many times.
At the beginning of the tenth month of the lunar calendar in 1945, fifty or sixty enemy spies broke into the Tiandu Town Office with guns, threatening my father to "resign". Under the protection of Sun Xianwu and Dou Wenfa, my father left the Tiandu Town Office.
Due to the threat, destruction and assassination of enemy forces, the underground environment has deteriorated. My father Gao Yuncheng can no longer stay here for a long time. Sun Xianwu, secretary of the Fufeng Underground Working Committee of the Communist Party of China, introduced my father to the Guanzhong Prefectural Committee of the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region in December 1945. Due to the impact of rain and snow, his father Gao Yuncheng arrived at the Guanzhong Prefectural Committee of Malan Town, Xunyi County, Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region in January 1946.
