Hu Changbao is from Ji'an, Jiangxi Province. He was born in 1912 and has a family in poverty. After joining the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army at the age of 18, he was quick-witted and was selected to be the central security squad responsible for Chairman Mao's safety, and later served as the squad leader. In October 1934, he embarked on the Long March of the Red Army.

In Li Min's memoirs

When Mao Zedong and the soldiers arrived at Chahegang, Sanhe Township, Xingjing County, due to the flat terrain and wide view, the Kuomintang plane easily discovered them and then dropped several bombs.

Hu Changbao urgently called Chen Changfeng to cover Chairman Mao, but due to the urgent situation, it was too late. At this critical moment, Hu Changbao didn't have time to think too much, jumped up and rushed directly to the Chairman. The Chairman was safe and sound, but Hu Changbao was shot several times and was seriously injured.

enemy plane flew away, Chairman Mao and his comrades surrounded Hu Changbao and asked about their injuries with concern. Hu Changbao didn't care about his serious injury and asked in a weak voice: "How is the Chairman?" The Chairman quickly replied: "I'm fine, not injured. " and comforted Hu Changbao to recover from his injuries and move forward with his comrades. Hu Changbao shook his head and said, "I can't do it anymore. I can't be with the Chairman anymore. If possible, please tell my parents after victory that I sacrificed for the revolution. They are in Ji'an, Jiangxi." After saying that, he closed his eyes forever.

According to the instructions of the chairman, Hu Changbao's body was buried in the water.

The troops set out again. Chairman Mao had already walked a long way and returned to Hu Changbao's grave. He personally added soil to the grave and poured the pepper water that he had used to keep warm around the grave to show his memorial service. The man doesn't cry easily, Resist U.S. aggression and aid Korea The chairman who lost his beloved son did not cry, but at this time, he was so sad that he shed tears for the only guard squad leader who died beside him, and later he was mentioned on several occasions.

Hu Changbao These three words are the eternal memory of the Chairman

1958, while inspecting Jinan Military Region , Mao Zedong met Chen Changfeng, his guard soldier on the Long March. He unfreely mentioned their former comrade-in-arms Hu Changbao, and hoped that Chen Changfeng could find Hu Changbao's parents or other relatives. It had been 23 years since Hu Changbao's death.

In Li Min's memoirs

On January 9, 1965, the famous American journalist Edgar Snow came to China. When Chairman Mao met him, the two talked about World War II .

When talking about the cruelty of the war, Chairman Mao said: Many times I was ready to sacrifice at any time, but I survived. The bomb fell to me and killed my guards, but I survived.

Edgar Snow doesn't know who Chairman Mao is talking about, but in Chairman Mao's heart, he will always remember: his name is Hu Changbao. The Chairman was not afraid of the enemy's bombs, but when the bomb fell on the young man Hu Changbao, he felt extremely painful.

In Li Min's memoirs

years later, Chairman Mao also talked to Li Min about his life and death separation with Hu Changbao, and was full of deep affection, as if it was yesterday. Li Min later wrote this incident into her memoir.

When he was seriously ill in his later years, Mao Zedong said when talking about life and death in the war: Others say that I am lucky, but I never believe it. What he might want to say is: the victory of the Long March was exchanged for the lives of countless revolutionary martyrs. No matter who is the turn to sacrifice, there is no complaint. We comrades who survived by chance should never forget them.

Because of this, for so many years of liberation, the Chairman never thought of building a tomb for the sacrificed Mao family, nor did he mention finding the bodies of two martyrs' younger brothers. But he always had a wish to find Hu Changbao's relatives.

In Li Min's memoirs

Following the instructions of the chairman, Chen Changfeng, who had already served as the commander of the Jiangxi Provincial Military Region at that time, checked the information several times and visited the masses, hoping to find some useful clues, but was disappointed again and again. Failure to fulfill the mission assigned by the Chairman became a great regret for Chen Changfeng when he died.

In 1990, the Xingjing County Government established a working group and began to search for the body and grave of martyr Hu Changbao. Unfortunately, there has been no progress in finding relatives. In 2005, the Hu Changbao Martyrs Memorial Hall was completed in Xingjing County, Ya'an City, and is available for people from all walks of life to come and pay tribute. The primary school where Hu Changbao died was named "Hu Changbao Primary School", and the martyrs and his deeds will be passed down from generation to generation.
