Although the leaders' philosophy of governing the country includes many contents, sometimes when expressed to others, just in a simple sentence, people can understand it.
Before the reform and opening up, Comrade Deng Xiaoping, who has always been approachable, asked him during a chat with a doctor: "Chief, what do you plan to take us after you are discharged from the hospital?"
It is obvious that this sentence is to ask, how will Mr. Deng lead the people of the whole country to build a country next.
When faced the doctor's question, Mr. Deng replied cheerfully with a smile: "I'm still the same set."
So, what exactly does "that set" mean? Why was Mr. Deng hospitalized at that time? How did Mr. Deng do what he said later?
301 Special Patients in Hospital
In December 1976, a special patient suddenly came to the Beijing People's Liberation Army General Hospital. Liu Yantang, a chief physician in the South Building of the hospital, was resting at home when he suddenly received an emergency call from the hospital, ordering him to go to the hospital immediately and standby.
After arriving at the hospital, Liu Yantang found that the person who came to see the treatment was Comrade Deng Xiaoping, who was the head of the central government.
Beijing PLA General Hospital, also known as the 301 Hospital, is the hospital with the highest medical level in the PLA. It not only carries the mission of saving lives and helping the PLA's army, but also an important figure in ensuring the health of the central leaders.
When Mr. Deng came to the hospital, he was in a good mood, but he was in good spirits. From getting off the bus to walking towards the outpatient department, he walked over with doctors and family. Although his face showed some pain and did not talk much to the people around him, he maintained his calmness and peace as an old revolutionary throughout the whole process.
After a careful examination by the doctor, doctor Liu Yantang and several other experts discussed and determined Deng Xiaoping's condition.
Because he is busy with work all year round and often sits to read files for a long time, Mr. Deng’s prostate has developed considerable inflammation. If this disease is completely cured, surgery is the best treatment method. This is also the best treatment advice given to Mr. Deng by the hospital.
After the doctor explained the diagnosis report to Mr. Deng, Mr. Deng said without hesitation: "Then do the surgery. Treat it as it should. Don't have any concerns."
Mr. Deng gave the hospital and doctors full trust. After reporting to the central government and obtaining approval, the hospital began to prepare for the operation for Mr. Deng.
Before the operation, Mrs. Zhuo Lin asked the doctor if there would be any danger and whether there would be any other problems after the operation out of concern for her husband?
Before the doctor could answer, Deng Gong first waved his hand and said to Zhuo Lin: "We must trust the doctor, don't ask too much."
Because he was performing surgery on a central leader like Deng Gong, the doctor and nurses were under a lot of psychological pressure.
Mr. Deng understands the psychological conditions of doctors and nurses very well. Not only does he not show any uneasiness, he also tries to help doctors and nurses calm down their nervous moods.
He told the doctor and nurse that he believed in everyone without conditions and let everyone feel at ease with the operation. Even if there is any problem with the operation, he would not blame them.
The doctors and nurses present were very moved. Among the many patients they encountered, few patients said these words to them.
The surgery was performed by chief physician Liu Yantang, and experienced directors from other relevant departments were assisted by the side. Both directors were Liu Yantang's teachers and were very confident in Liu Yantang's surgical level.
Everyone in the operating room was very energetic, afraid of a little mistake. When preparing for the operation, there were only sounds made by various medical devices in the entire operating room, and the atmosphere seemed a little solemn and tense.
Before the operation began, the doctor asked Mr. Deng if there was anything uncomfortable. Mr. Deng was very energetic and said to everyone calmly: "I'm fine, you can just have the surgery with confidence." Mr. Deng's words were like a reassurance, which made everyone feel much more relaxed, and the atmosphere in the entire operating room was no longer so tense.
According to Mr. Deng’s requirements, the anesthesiologist only underwent local anesthesia. Mr. Deng did not want to sleep during the operation, so he did not take sleeping pills. Mr. Deng still maintained the habits preserved in the revolutionary era and kept as clear as possible under any circumstances.
During the operation, the doctor and nurse cooperated closely with a relaxed attitude and moved smoothly. During the operation, the doctor asked Mr. Deng many times if he had any discomfort. Mr. Deng replied calmly, "I'm fine, don't worry about the operation."
Doctor Liu Yantang later recalled it with emotion:
"Mr. Deng himself has suffered a lot of pain because of the disease, but during the examination and surgery, he can still think of us and think of us for our sake."

The operation was very successful. Mr. Deng was resting in the ward. The sequelae of the operation caused pain at times. The doctor knew that these pains were sometimes very severe, making the patient very uncomfortable.
But Mr. Deng never showed bitterness because of the pain, nor did he wail or moan. When the pain came, he just endured silently. His perseverance as a revolutionary made the medical staff deeply admire him.
After the operation, Deng Gong's health recovered smoothly. With the efforts of doctors and nurses and the cooperation of Deng Gong, the disease was cured and no new problems arose.
"What are you planning to take us with you?"
During the recovery process of Deng Gong's hospitalization, Liu Yantang sometimes chatted with him in order to help Deng Gong relax as much as possible during the treatment process, which can also pass the time for Deng Gong to receive treatment.
At that time, the central government was already discussing and electing Mr. Deng as the core cadre of the new leadership group. After being discharged from the hospital, Mr. Deng was about to start leading the central work. Liu Yantang asked Mr. Deng during a chat: "Chief, how can we lead us if you are discharged from the hospital in the future?" Mr. Deng, sitting on the hospital bed, heard Liu Yantang's question, and replied cheerfully: "I am still the same."
The "that set" that Mr. Deng mentioned mainly refers to reform.
After being transferred back to Beijing from Jiangxi in 1972, Deng Gong took office as the First Vice Premier of the State Council and Vice Chairman of the CPC Central Committee in 1975, and began to lead the central work in all respects.
Deng Gong proposed the goals of carrying out economic reform, vigorously developing productivity, and further realizing socialist modernization, which was approved by many central cadres and the people of the whole country.
However, due to various reasons, Mr. Deng had to resign from his position as a central leadership in the spring of the following year and lived in a courtyard near Tiananmen .
In October of the same year, the country ushered in a new political situation. Many people agreed to invite Mr. Deng to return to the core of the central leadership. The Party Central Committee began to discuss this matter. Mr. Deng’s re-presentation of the central work is expected to be imminent.
At this time, Mr. Deng had prostate problems in December at the end of 1976 and was admitted to the 301 Hospital.
After being discharged from the 301 Hospital, Mr. Deng resumed his central leadership position a few months later, took on the important task of building the country, and began to use what he called the "that set" to inject new development vitality into the country.
First, the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee of in 1978, established the development route of with economic construction as the center, and then put forward the slogan "development is the hard truth".
At the end of 1978, the farmland in Xiaogang Village, Fengyang, Anhui began to be produced and households, and the road to reform began to begin. In 1979, the central government decided to establish special economic zones in Shantou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen, Guangdong.
foreign investment and foreign investors introduced have flocked to the special economic zones and flowed into China, injecting fresh vitality into the economic development of the country.
In just two years, the spring breeze of "internal reform and opening up to the outside world" quickly blew across China, and Deng Xiaoping used what he called "that set" to bring new takeoffs to China's modernization construction.
As the country becomes ever-changing under the trend of economic development, Deng Gong worked hard for the country for another 12 years in his position as a leader from 1977 to 1989.
Although there were no major problems in the body, he was unable to take on heavy leadership positions because of his age and retired in 1989.
20 years later, he was admitted to the 301 hospital again
After retirement, Deng Gong did not make any requests to the organization, but just lived in a yard on the back street of Jingshan, Beijing in a low-key manner. He lived his old age with his family, and still maintained a regular daily routine.
Eat breakfast on time every day and go to bed on time, take a walk in the morning, and other times you are reading books and newspapers in the study or undergoing a medical examination from a doctor.
Sometimes Deng Guild swims and plays bridges. These two kinds of sports are his hobbies for many years and are also two criteria he uses to measure his health.
He once said to people:
"As long as I can still play bridge, it means my mind is still clear, as long as I can still swim, it means my body is healthy enough."
Due to good living habits, Deng Gong did not experience various diseases that many elderly people have after retirement, but the only thing that cannot be cured is that Parkinson's syndrome is increasingly troubled by the elderly.
Parkinson's disease is an incurable neurological disease. In mild cases, there will be loss of control of limbs such as hand shaking, and in severe cases, it will lead to dyspnea, dysphagia and other conditions.
As Mr. Deng gets older, Parkinson's disease has become more and more troubled. At first, it only occasionally has an impact on his life. Later, he often has poor physical strength when swimming, and later he becomes more and more laborious when playing bridge.
For the sake of Deng Gong's health, the doctor advised him to quit smoking and alcohol. Deng Xiaoping had been smoking for many years.
For ordinary people, it is difficult to quit easily after smoking for many years, but since Deng Xiaoping decided to quit smoking, he basically didn't spend much energy. He said he wouldn't smoke, and he would stop smoking. He quickly quit smoking, which surprised and admired his family and medical staff.
When swimming and playing bridge can no longer be done, Deng Gong is still optimistic about life. In order to keep healthy as much as possible, he does some aerobics every day, and insists on taking walks. The doctor regularly performs physical examinations for Deng Gong.
But all this failed to prevent Parkinson's syndrome from becoming more and more serious in Deng Gong until the end of 1996.
December 12, 1996, that morning, Mr. Deng got up on time as usual and walked to the bathroom to prepare for washing up. Suddenly, he felt breathing difficulties, and his family and medical staff immediately took Mr. Deng to the hospital in a car.
This ten-kilometer journey was not many cars on the road at that time, and the car escorting Mr. Deng was unobstructed and the driving time was not long. However, for Zhuo Lin at that time, she was anxious along the way.
Mr. Deng was admitted to the South Ward Building of 301 Hospital again, and this time it was different from the last time.
After a careful examination, the doctor found that Mr. Deng had no other physical problems except for Parkinson's syndrome, which had been around for more than ten years. After the last surgery, there was no problem with the prostate. The diabetes that is commonly seen in the elderly did not appear on Mr. Deng.
Because the frequency of Parkinson's disease recurrence is getting higher and higher, Deng Gong has experienced breathing difficulties many times. Every time the doctor and nurse will undergo intense rescue to stabilize the condition, but Deng Gong's body inevitably becomes weaker and weaker.
1997 on the first day of the Lunar New Year, firecrackers were heard one after another, and the hospital ward was in silence. Although there were family guarding Deng Gong’s ward and guards and medical staff outside the ward, everyone was silent.
On the one hand, it is to avoid affecting Mr. Deng’s rest, and on the other hand, everyone is silently looking forward to Mr. Deng’s ability to survive this winter and usher in the spring of the new year with everyone.
What makes everyone sad is that after another 12 days, Mr. Deng passed away at the thirteenth day of the first lunar month at the age of 93.
According to Mr. Deng's last wish, the central government did not hold a farewell ceremony for him. After his wife Zhuo Lin donated his cornea, she took a plane to scatter his ashes into the sea, and the secretary took all his clothes to the boiler room to burn it.
This great revolutionary, except for creating immeasurable welfare for the people and leaving a precious spiritual wealth for the world, did not retain any material assets for himself and himself to enjoy during his lifetime.
