Wang Jie was born in Jinxiang County, Shandong Province in 1942. Joined the Chinese People's Liberation Army in August 1961. Joined the Chinese Communist Youth League in February 1962.

On July 14, 1965, when Wang Jie was helping the militia mine squad to conduct military training, at the critical moment when the explosive package was about to explode unexpectedly, he jumped towards the explosion point and used his body to cover the 12 militiamen and people present. The armed cadre sacrificed his 23-year-old young life.
