The origin of Mother's Day
Mother's Day in the modern sense originated in the United States.
Anna Jarvis's mother passed away on the second Sunday of May 1906. After her mother's death, driven by regret and pain, this gentle and easy-going woman had a lingering thought from then on - —I want my mother to be respected and remembered by people all over the world.
After a year of hard work, people spent the first Mother's Day on May 10, 1908, the second anniversary of Anna's mother's death. The celebration location was St. Andrews Church in Graverton, West Virginia. Anna's mother was a teacher at the Sunday church school there. Because her mother loved carnations during her lifetime, this flower became a symbol of Mother's Day.
But Anna was not satisfied with this. With her unremitting publicity, a year later Philadelphia became the first city to designate Mother's Day as an official holiday. Anna continued to write dozens of letters and sent them to the US Congress, local governors and women's organizations, proposing the creation of Mother's Day. After her repeated appeals, this proposal received widespread response and support from the society. In 1914, US President Wilson signed the 25th public resolution, officially establishing the second Sunday in May each year as a legal holiday in the United States - Mother's Day.
After the creation of Mother's Day, it has received support from people all over the world. Today, more countries celebrate this holiday. Mother's Day has become a truly international holiday.
Anna Jarvis fought to defend the dignity of Mother's Day for 30 years, and finally died in a nursing home in West Chester, Pennsylvania. She was never married and had no children.
