How much is the cost of studying in Australia?

If you choose to study in Australia, you have chosen a wonderful location. Whether you're craving exploring Great Barrier Reef , finding yourself fascinated by the history and culture of Australia, or just enjoying relaxing on the beach, there's something for everyone, you'll definitely have an amazing experience. However, you may find yourself wondering how much this experience will cost.

The first thing you should consider is your institution fees, such as tuition, board and application fees. After you figure out these costs, you can start researching other things like food, transportation, entertainment and travel. Many of these fees will certainly vary from person to person, but this post will guide you in the right direction to gain some form of understanding of what you should pay for certain projects and experiences.

Average tuition fees for one semester in Australia

The tuition fees for studying in Australia are entirely less than US$4,000. If you have the opportunity to study abroad through exchange programs at a domestic university and your tuition expenses are relatively low (listen well, state students), I highly recommend this option. Through the University Exchange Program, it is possible that you will continue to pay the same tuition fees to your alma mater while studying abroad. For example, I participated in a direct communication program offered by my university. Through this program, I continue to pay my school the same in-state tuition for $3,800 per semester instead of paying tuition to overseas institutions.

If your university does not offer an exchange program, or your tuition expenses are much higher, then you may want to consider directly enrolling in an Australian university or through a third-party institution.

The following lists some examples of popular Australian universities and courses, all in US dollars (non-AUD).

The tuition fee for direct registration to study abroad for one semester is:

University of Western Australia , Perth : According to major, starting at AU$12,689 per semester (2021)

Macaure University Sydney: Depends on major, starting at US$12,458 per semester (2021)

University of Western Sydney : Depends on major, starting at US$10,090 per semester (2021)

Griffith University , Gold Coast: Depends on major, starting at US$10,959 per semester (2021)

Overseas semester provided by a third party Tuition fee:

Study abroad in CIEE College in Sydney, Australia: US$19,450 per semester (2022)

IFSA: Monash University Australia study abroad program: US$18,975 per semester (2022)

TEAN study abroad program in Wolonggang: 13,1 per semester $10 (2021)

Bond University Gold Coast CIS Study Abroad: $17,690-$18,990 per semester (2022)

  Average living expenses in Australia:

  Housing

Average living expenses in Australia depend on your living arrangements to a large extent. Some projects provide accommodation and accommodation in the project fee, while others charge a flat fee, providing you with monthly allowances for rent and food. Other students may be responsible for solving all problems on their own.

If you decide to find your own house, you can expect the average monthly rent price of a studio apartment in the city center as follows:

                            Melbourne : $1,293

    Brisbane : $1,289

   Adelaide: $1,095

In Australia, the cost of a host family is roughly the same as a dormitory on campus, about $4,000. Shared housing units may be cheaper and may be a better option for students with tight budgets. At my boarding university, there is a student village close to campus, where rooms cost as little as $400 per month. After a semester, it will cost you less than $2,000.The only inconvenience of this choice is that you have to buy your own food and pay for additional utilities.

  Daily living expenses

In addition to food and accommodation, you also have some other living expenses. Please refer to the table below to understand the approximate cost of living:

Internet and utility bills: $227 per month

Cheap meals: $15

Eat two meals in a better restaurant: $56

Weekly grocery fee: $69-80

Mobile phone fee: $25-40/ Monthly

Transportation fee: USD 114 (monthly ticket), USD 2-5 (one-way ticket in the city)

  Gym, monthly fee: USD 50

  Movie ticket: USD 14

  Domestic beer: USD 6

   cappuccino : USD 3

  Pair of jeans: $76

Your total living expenses will depend on how often you go out to eat and drink. On the cheapest end, you can live for $5,000 for a semester. However, for safety reasons, I recommend a budget of nearly $6,000-7,000.

  Flights and travel expenses:

Flying to Australia is a long journey. I remember my trip home lasted nearly 30 hours between flight and stopover. Long-distance flights usually mean expensive prices, but there are ways to get you to spend less on your air tickets. A round trip ticket from the US to Australia may cost you $700-$2500. As you can see, this is a huge cost difference in , so knowing where and when to buy tickets is an important factor that affects the price you pay.

When looking for air tickets, the earlier the better. Many airlines have promotions throughout the year, so if you follow their website within a few months, you will definitely come across good flight deals. I like to use Google flights, a new software launched by Google that scans the websites of different airlines to find the best price for your travel dates. If you have flexible travel plans, it will also tell you the price around the departure date. Another good option to find the best price is Skyscanner.

Usually it is cheaper to fly to larger cities such as Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. If your school is located near these cities, consider flying to these cities and booking a bus or train/tram to complete the rest of the journey. I flew to Brisbane and was able to book a two-hour bus ticket to my city Toowoomba for $25.

Other fees to consider when studying in Australia

The only other mandatory fees you should pay are your student visa and health insurance . The student visa (student subcategory 500) costs about USD 400 and is available on the Australian Government website. This visa is great because it allows you to work 20 hours a week as long as you are studying in college.

Overseas Student Health Insurance (OSHC) is needed by international students entering Australia. Health insurance costs only around $150-250 per semester, so the cost is quite cheap. Your course or university will usually give you more information and assist you in applying for health insurance.

After calculating the necessary expenses, you can budget the remaining funds accordingly to meet any entertainment and travel expenses. I personally spend about $50-70 per week on entertainment and maybe $3,000 on travel expenses. In between, my personal expenses for a semester combined are about $4,000.

Many people will tell you that studying abroad will cost you a lot of money. While some programs cost as much as $20,000, it is still entirely possible to study in Australia for less than $14,000 (including tuition and board fees)! Many programs, such as those at Australian universities, are at the discretion of students. Many programs, such as the ones I do, allow you to use your federal financial aid to fund such as tuition, boarding and travel expenses during your study abroad. There are also a large number of study abroad scholarships available to students who want to go overseas, which will be of great help to fund your experience.

If you are considering studying in Australia, please do some research to find the best courses for your financial and educational needs. No matter the cost, you will definitely have an unforgettable Australian study experience.
