Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) is the fourth public university in Singapore. The first batch of 340 students formally started classes in early May 2012. The New University of Science and Technology cooperates with two of the world's top universities-Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States and Zhejiang University in China, making the university a hub for the integration of East and West.
Singapore University of Technology and Design has not been included in the comprehensive university rankings due to its short establishment time. However, it has already emerged in some international professional rankings. According to the “Global Frontier Engineering Education” report released by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on March 27, 2018, Singapore University of Technology and Design was selected as one of the “Top Ten Emerging Leaders in Engineering Education in the World” and ranked first. In the "World University Academic Rankings 2019" of the Shanghai Soft Research System, Singapore University of Technology and Design ranked 801-900. Among them, it ranks 19th in the world for communications engineering. In addition, Singapore University of Technology and Design ranks 101-105 in the world-class discipline rankings of computer science and engineering.
Singapore is a model of regional development led by elites, and has never given up on cooperating and learning with forces that influence the world. According to Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s introduction, the original intention of Singapore University of Technology and Design was to make up for the shortcomings of other universities’ curriculum. At the same time, it introduced the world’s strongest MIT engineering education from the United States, and introduced the latest from Zhejiang University in China, the strongest developing country Develop education. Combine engineering and design to create works and talents that are practical and have a lasting influence on the enterprise, society and national economy. At present, the university has 4 key supporting disciplines, namely Architecture and Sustainable Design (ASD), Engineering Product Development (EPD), Engineering System and Design (ESD) or Information System Technology and Design (ISTD), in addition to 2 supporting disciplines Disciplines, namely humanities and social sciences and mathematics. The university has set aside a budget of millions of dollars, and with the support of artificial intelligence/data science capabilities, it will lead the next phase of growth in three key economic sectors (aviation, urban and healthcare).
In 2019, the number of cooperative institutions of Singapore University of Technology and Design increased to 45 institutions in 15 countries, including 29 exchange partners in 12 countries and 31 summer programs in 10 countries. The world-class Stanford University, Tokyo Institute of Technology, European Institute of Innovation and University of California, Berkeley, etc., also cooperate with the New University of Science and Technology to provide summer courses. It is expected to reach a 40% increase in overseas students.
Singapore University of Technology and Design sends 100 students to Zhejiang University for exchanges every year. These students can not only observe many academically authoritative courses of Zhejiang University, but also enter an internship in a first-class Chinese company that has a cooperative relationship with Zhejiang University. Zhejiang University will also send 50 students to Singapore to exchange and study every year. The educational cooperation between the two universities is reflected in the fact that Zhejiang University will offer multiple courses to enable undergraduates from Singapore University of Technology and Design to have a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and entrepreneurial culture. These courses will be taught in English by the most authoritative teachers from Zhejiang University. Educational cooperation also includes the launch of graduation design competitions for undergraduate students. The competition will be hosted by the two universities in turn and will be held at Singapore University of Technology and Design, Zhejiang University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology to provide a platform for students and departments to exchange ideas. In addition to support in education and teaching, the two sides will also carry out scientific research cooperation through joint research projects. The areas of scientific research cooperation between the two parties include: transportation, clean energy, environmental protection, health care and other scientific research fields of mutual interest.
