This design can reduce the heat dissipation pressure of the vehicle cooling system under high performance. Because the exhaust pipe is integrated on the cylinder head, although the exhaust system can be cooled through the cylinder head water jacket, a large amount of exhaust heat will also enter the cooling system through the water jacket.
In the case of high power, this requirement on the heat dissipation capacity of the cooling system is extremely harsh. Therefore, Mercedes-Benz did not use an integrated exhaust pipe for performance reasons, but adopted a special double-layer stainless steel welded exhaust pipe design to reduce losses and improve the efficiency of the supercharger.
In fact, BMW also encountered this problem. On the latest BMW B48TU second-generation 2.0T engine, BMW uses an integrated exhaust pipe for the low-power version, but uses a non-integrated exhaust pipe for the high-power version.
