and inherited the blood of the old monk Xuyun, becoming the 44th generation heir of Linji Sect. The old monk Xuyun changed his dharma title, "Ben Huan", to "Ben Huan", which means that the original nature is always pure and radiates light to all sentient beings. the meaning of. Elder Benhuan, whose lay name is Zhang Zhishan, was born in the 33rd year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty, on September 21st, 1907, , Xinzhou District, Wuhan City, Hubei Province, one in Zhangwan Village, Liji West Farming house.

His mother, Peng, was born as a lady, hardworking and virtuous, and good at educating children. Elder Benhuan ranked fourth, with an older sister and two older brothers on the top, and a younger brother and younger sister on the bottom. Although his family is not wealthy, his parents still gritted their teeth and let Elder Benhuan go to private school. Xiao Zhishan was diligent and studious. He was influenced by Confucianism and Mencius, and laid a solid cultural foundation. However, things are impermanent. When Xiao Zhishan was in the fourth year, his father, the pillar of the family, passed away due to illness, his mother and elder brother. Can only continue to study hard for him. After barely finishing six years of private school, but because his family was too poor, he had to drop out of school and went to a local grocery store as an apprentice in Cangbu Street.

This has also cultivated the elder Benhuan since he was a child, and his diligent and simple character. Fortunately, the owner of this grocery store is a devout Buddhist believer. He often takes Benhuan to the local Baoen Temple to burn incense and worship Buddha, and often persuades him to also learn Buddhism. Over time, Elder Benhuan was also influenced by the Dharma. He often heard it in the monastery, spreading the teachings of the holy masters, and finally aroused the roots of his past life’s wisdom and wisdom, so he made up his mind to make a formal step. Enter the Buddhism, understand the mind and see the nature, consciously realize him, and follow the path of the Bodhisattva. Plus his scientific name is Zhishan,It means to be interested in the mountains and forests. So he went back to discuss with his mother and elder brother. Although he met opposition, he insisted on becoming a monk, and the family had to agree.

On the fifteenth day of the first lunar month in 1930, the 24-year-old elder Benhuan bid farewell to his family and came to Baoen Temple. Under the sect of Master Chuansheng, he was ordained as a monk and named as Benhuan. Since then began his life's spiritual career. The Master Chuansheng said with joy: I have long seen that you have a very deep bond with Buddhism. Today, if you come to become a monk, it shows that your bond with Buddhism is mature.

In February of this year, the Master Chuansheng recommended him to go to Wuchang at Baotong Temple for ordination. After arriving at Baotong Temple, Elder Benhuan first accepted the study of Dharma and precepts, and on the eighth day of April that year, Buddha's birthday was ordained. The preceptor of Baotong Temple, called Master Chisong, is also a high-ranking monk. He told Elder Benhuan that to understand the true meaning of Buddhism, he must go through a lot of painstaking practice, and he can only experience it in person. Just understand the theory. useless. He also pointed out that it is necessary to go out to visit some of the eminent monks and great virtues in some famous mountains and ancient temples, and pay special attention to the practice of precepts. Elder Ben-hwan felt that it made sense. He kept the words of Master Song firmly in his heart and decided to become a true practitioner. Even if he has gone through hardships and hardships, he must go out to find a teacher and visit the Tao, and personally experience asceticism_ span2span.

At this time, there happened to be a female layman named Wan Yajin who I knew. The local monks and customs called her Aunt Wan Dae. She has always been kind and helpful. He learned of Elder Benhuan’s ambitions after taking the ordination and was very amazed. Immediately donate generously to support Ben Huan to go to school. In mid-April of this year, Elder Benhuan took a boat from Wuchang to Zhenjiang and walked more than 60 miles to reach Yangzhou Gaomin Temple and paid homage to Laiguo Lao monk. Laiguo Zen Master is a Taoist monk, he is from Huanggang, Hubei, and he happily accepted this young fellow as a waiter.

Zen Master Laiguo asked Ben Huan to copy the Song Renzong 's "Praise for the Monk".Let him understand what it means to be a monk and what constitutes a practice. Then he told him the story of Yixuan Patriarch of Linji Zong, encouraging him to follow the Patriarch as an example and through strict practice, he can become an enlightened person in the future. So starting from July 1930, Elder Benhuan came to the old monk Guo as his teacher, and followed the old monk to learn Zen for seven years. The style of Gaomin Temple has always been rigorous, and Laiguo Lao Monk is even more respected. During these seven years, Elder Benhuan has been very diligent in his practice. Laiguo Lao Monk's respect.

Laiguo Lao advocated that disciples must sit in meditation and practice meditation and pay equal attention to agriculture and meditation. Therefore, the monastery has a lot of work to open up wasteland, farm land, and self-reliance. In his spare time, Elder Ben Huan does not only read Buddhist scriptures, but also meditate every night. In order to practice diligently, he used to sit in meditation for ninety-one days without falling back. The so-called not falling down means not lying down to sleep at night. Maintaining a meditation state, such a long period of meditation, not only requires perseverance, but more importantly, the concentration of the spirit, energy, and spirit needs to be sufficient, otherwise the body of ordinary people will be difficult to support. This shows that Elder Benhuan’s understanding and wisdom roots are very deep. Therefore, he has also become a role model for the monks in the whole monastery and is one of the top ten disciples of Laiguo Lao monk.

By February of 1937, the 31-year-old Elder Benhuan made a wish to go to the Manjusri Dojo in Wutai Mountain, Shanxi. He paid respects to Lao Guo Lao Monk, and first went to Wuhan to complete the mission of almsgiving given by Master. The silver dollar for the construction of Gaomin Temple, after the explanation, started from Baoding, Hebei Province, began to incense, three steps and one worship, kneeling piously, passing through Taihang Mountain, Langya Mountain, Taibai Mountain and other places, the whole journey was more than 300 miles, and the whole way was windy, dining and sleeping. , Wearing a star and wearing a moon, even if his palm was chapped and his knees were worn out, he did not hesitate to worship for six months, and finally reached Wutaishan.

Elder Ben Hwan then began to worship the five tops. Starting from Beitai , the same three steps and one worship, hardships and hard work, the average elevation of Mount Wutai is more than 3,000 meters, the weather in late autumn enters early in winter, there is a master who is still sunny during the day, but snowflakes float at night.Elder Benhuan’s robe is often covered with a layer of frost, and it may slip because of the ice and snow. In this way, another six months passed, and it lasted for a whole year. Elder Ben Hwan didn't even shave his hair or beard. Whenever someone asked him inexplicably, why did he practice so hard? He replied this way: If you want to practice truly, you must uphold the precepts, and you must cultivate both Buddhahood and virtue. Only by being able to endure unbearable things and doing things that are difficult to do, can you temper your ego. Only when you enter the Tao can you develop bodhicitta. If you cannot enter the Tao or develop bodhicitta, how can you make a wish to save others?

Judging from the above records, Elder Benhuan is indeed a high-level monk who has practiced empirical evidence. As the saying goes, you must be aware of this matter. The Buddha used to practice asceticism in the snow mountain for six years. Master Xuanzang went west to seek the Dharma for more than ten years, putting life and death out of the equation. In order to repay his parents’ kindness, the old monk Xuyun spent three years worshipping Mount Wutai. Their common characteristic is that they are not persistent. In this body, take suffering as pleasure to hone the xinxing.

Beginning in 1938, Elder Ben-hwan settled in the Guangji canopy of Mount Wutai, which is Bishan Temple , and determined to practice penance in this Buddhist holy place for ten years. At that time, the abbot of the monastery, Master Guanghui passed away, and Master Shouye took over as the abbot, and Elder Benhuan and Master Fadu served as the superintendent. In addition to managing some of the temple’s large and small matters every day, Elder Benhwan spends the rest of his time doing meditation and practice, and imitating the ancient virtues, piercing his fingers, using blood as ink, and respectfully writing "Hua Yan Sutra" and " Diamond Sutra" Wait for the classics, write five or six hundred words every day, and write a total of 19 volumes of the blood classics. More than two hundred thousand words.

Unfortunately, due to frequent wars, most of the blood sutras have been lost. Only the "Pu Xian Bodhisattva's Wish Goods" has a special cause. After fifty years of ups and downs, it finally returned to Elder Benhuan. This was preserved by a Kuguan monk from Bishan Temple, who risked his life and sent it to Yuandao when Elder Benhuan was promoted to the abbot of Guangxiao Temple in 1987. At that time, Elder Ben-hwan was simply unbelievable. It has been more than 50 years since this sutra left the elder. It is incredible to have lost and recovered!

In the preface of this blood sutra, Elder Ben Huan said: For the sake of the dharma, I hope that all beings will be free from suffering and not seek happiness for themselves. In fact, with regard to blood-stabbing scripture writing, such great virtues as of the Ming Dynasty, Hanshan master and Miaofeng Zen master, have all such feats. When we talked about "The Chronicle of Hanshan" earlier, we introduced it. Elder Benhuan’s move is to take practical actions to repay the grace of Buddha, parents and sentient beings, and to eliminate all sin karma since the beginning.

By the time of 1941, Mount Wutai was already an anti-Japanese guerrilla area of the Eighth Route Army. Elder Benhuan firmly supported the anti-Japanese policy. Once, a battalion commander of the Eighth Route Army was spotted by the Japanese army when he was on a mission. Urgently, Elder Ben-hwan decisively hid the battalion commander in the temple. Regardless of the safety of his life, he dealt with the Japanese army. The Japanese angrily asked the temple to surrender the Eighth Route Army. Believing in the Buddha, not knowing the "Eight Routes", finally cleverly dismissed the Japanese army. Afterwards, he was praised by the Eighth Route Army. In front of the country, Elder Ben-huan once said: I am a citizen first, then a monk. Everyone is responsible for the rise and fall of the country. In times of war, no matter how big or small the people are, they have a responsibility.

Beginning in October 1942, Elder Ben-hwan had been in retreat at Qixian Temple in Mount Wutai for 3 years. In addition to reading the Tripitaka, he also released the flames at night to fight against the Japanese. Fallen soldiers. In July 1945, Elder Benhuan left the customs and returned to Bishan Temple. Bishan Temple has a treasure of Zhenshan called Huayan Scripture Pagoda, written by Xu Deqi, a disciple of the Three Treasures of the Ming Dynasty of . It is 5.1 meters long and 1.7 meters wide. It is framed with white and yellow silk. The content is the full text of "Dafang Guangfo Huayan Sutra", written by Xu Jushi for 16 years, and is known as the pyramid of Buddhist sutras.

In March 1947, Elder Ben Hwan heard that some blindly moving farmers were going to attack Bishan Temple. So quickly find someone to secretly back out of the mountain. And swear in front of the Buddha, people are in the tower, and swear to coexist and die with the sutra tower. In order to avoid rabbits, this treasure was destroyed during the war, Elder Ben-hwan personally carried the pagoda and began a long journey.

In April, I first carried the pagoda to the Pure Land Temple in , Shanyin County, and settled in Xia. In July, I carried the pagoda to the Mi Tuo Temple in Xizhimen, Beijing. He told the two monks, Vacuum and Cizhou, how they had left the pagoda. go through. The Buddhist monk said: At the moment the army is in turmoil, you protect the Buddha in the chaos, and you are worthy of being a buddhist child. Elder Benhuan told him that this was the duty of the Wutai monks, and he planned to protect the pagoda in the lower courtyard of Bishan Temple, which is Puji Temple in Shanghai.

In September, Elder Benhuan arrived in Tianjin with his back pagoda, and took a boat from Tanggu Wharf in Tianjin to Qingdao. He stayed at Zhanshan Temple for one night. The abbot of Zhanshan Temple saw Elder Benhuan alone, so he sent twenty A monk, escorted Buddha treasure together. After several twists and turns, he was finally safely escorted to Puji Temple in Shanghai. I saw my fellow brothers, Master Shouye and Master Fadu who lived in the temple. When the two saw the Buddha treasure, they were moved and called out: Brother Benhuan, you have worked hard all the way, you have protected this priceless treasure for the Buddha. Made a great contribution. Everyone was extremely happy.

Then, in the third month of the lunar calendar in 1948, Elder Ben Huan was still practicing at Puji Temple in Shanghai. For many years, he has been thinking of his elderly mother, and once wrote a poem: It is unbearable to die, and it hurts to live away from reality. When the son went out of the mountain pass, his mother remembered that he was in a foreign country. My heart follows day and night, and we shed thousands of lines of tears. Such as the ape weeping his beloved son, breaking his heart every inch.

One day, he suddenly received a letter from his second brother, saying that his mother was seriously ill and he was looking forward to seeing him back soon. Elder Benhuan immediately explained to the temple and rushed back to his hometown in Hubei, where he lived in Baoen Temple, the temple where he was a monk. Every morning after breakfast, I walked 15 miles to go home to take care of my mother. In the evening, I returned to Baoen Temple and returned to the flames every day.

For five months, I waited for my mother, brought tea and water, fed rice and medicine, and was meticulous. One day in September, on the night before the mother’s death, Elder Ben-hwan filled his two shoulder sockets with vegetable oil, put a lamp on to light it, and knelt on his knees in front of the old mother’s bed.The filial piety will be sent to the end until the old mother leaves the world. After the old mother died of illness, the monks and nuns were asked to spend seven days for the old mother, and they kept their filial piety in the old mother's hall for forty-nine days. The elders repeatedly said his vows before the spirit: "Rest in peace! Mother. As the Buddha, Benhuan, I must follow the Buddhist teachings and report to four graces, and three ways to help. Never forget the parents to nurture the great grace and repair . Righteous path , eternally promote Buddhism, and build a bright Buddhist land."

By November 1948, Elder Benhuan came to Nanhua Temple in Guangdong. He often went to Dajue Temple in Yunmen of Ruyuan to visit Old Xuyun. Monk. The old monk was already one hundred and nine years old at the time, with a unique eye, and respected the Master Benhuan . The old monk Xuyun believed that Benhuan’s practice and virtue were very good. Considering that he was over a hundred years old, The 42-year-old Ben Huan should be the abbot of Nanhua Temple.

and let Elder Benhuan inherit the Caoxi lineage and grant him the 44th generation descendant of Linji Sect. Moreover, the old monk changed the title of Ben Huan from the illusory "phantom" to the brand new "Huan", in order to make him carry forward the Dharma, which shows that the old monk has high hopes for Elder Ben Huan.

On the eighth day of the first lunar month of 1949, Elder Benhuan was formally ascended to his throne at Nanhua Temple. On the eighth day of April, he began to preach the precepts. Venerable Monk Xuyun was invited to be the preceptor, and he served as the preaching monk for a total of five precepts. In the 13 days, more than 600 monks from home and abroad came to receive the ordination. In 1950, our country carried out the rural land reform . The monks in Nanhua Temple, like the peasants, were allocated the land, and everyone went to self-reliance. In this extremely difficult environment, from 1953 to 1957, Elder Benhuan continued to promote the Dharma and presided over the precepts for three consecutive times. To learn later, continue the Buddha's life.

By February 1958, Elder Ben-hwan was suddenly labeled as a "rightist" in a special external environment, arrested and imprisoned, and sentenced to 15 years in prison for .But Elder Benhuan took it calmly. He believed that all kinds of hardships were all about eliminating the sin karma of his past life. In addition, bad things can be turned into good things, and they have escaped the criticism of the "Cultural Revolution" by being locked in it. He regarded hard work as a kind of practice.

By May 1973, Elder Ben Huan was released after serving his sentence, but at this time, there were no temples to go to, so he had to go to a labor reform farm to work. Elder Benhuan was mixed with vulgarity and light, calmly faced it, and used hard work to temper his Dao Xin. He worked during the day and quietly meditated at night by himself. Until March 1, 1980, he finally left the labor camp and was received by some disciples from Danxiashan 's Biechuan Temple . Under the spring breeze of reform and opening up, a nightmare finally awakened. On May 29, 1982, the Guangdong Provincial Government announced that it had rehabilitated Elder Benhuan and returned him to his innocence.

On the day when Elder Benhuan came to Biechuan Temple, there were more than forty lay laymen in Guangzhou who crowded into the small wooden building to worship the Buddha. They saw Elder Benhuan coming, they knelt down and said with joy: Old Master, you finally came back! All of us are really destined. Now Doe Chuan Temple is saved! Then, led by Hong Kong disciples Rong Ling, Kuan Chun and others, the construction of Biechuan Temple began.

Later, General Li Hanhun, who settled in the United States, returned to the country for sightseeing and saw the built Biechuan Temple. He was moved and praised. He wrote "Biechuan Chan Temple" enthusiastically and presented a plaque with four large characters. The Liurong Temple in Guangdong, since the old monk Xuyun had done the last water and land puja in 1946, no puja has been held for more than 40 years. Beginning in 1986, Elder Benhuan began to hold dharma conferences in Biechuan Monastery, and he would practice the seventh meditation every year, which attracted many believers at home and abroad.

Lay Zhao Puchu, the old president of the Buddhist Association, specially revisited the Danxia Mountain and wrote a poem for Elder Benhuan. A few of them are: The peaks are like children and grandchildren, sitting high in Danxia Temple. The concentration can be exchanged through the sea, and the jungle still has a typical existence. The Guangxiao Temple in Guangzhou City is a famous temple in Lingnan. It is also the ordination of Master Huineng.Because of various reasons, the place where he first appeared on the altar was already decadent and exposed. Under the advice of the old layman Zhao Puchu, he invited Elder Ben Huan to serve as the abbot of Guangxiao Temple.

In the first lunar month of 1987, the 81-year-old Elder Benhuan went from Shaoguan to Guangxiao Temple in Guangzhou and took office. Under the leadership of the old man, the main project of Guangxiao Temple was basically completed after the recruitment of ten directions, and each temple was dazzling with Buddha, planted with flowers and trees. The newly-built Hongfa Temple in Shenzhen was also officially abbot in 1991 by Monk Ben Huan, speeding up the pace of construction. On June 18, 1992, a ceremony for the consecration of the Buddha and the ascension of the abbot was held.

In 1989, the Baoen Temple in Wuhan, Hubei was rebuilt. In 1995, the fourth ancestor of Zen Zhengjue Zen Temple was rebuilt. In 1996, Nanxiong Liankai Temple was rebuilt and so on. The monastery reconstructed or restored by the elder Bonhwan provides a dojo for many monks to practice and promote the Dharma. In the hands of his disciple Ben Huan, the Buddhism coat that the old monk Xuyun had to keep for his life, finally lived up to his expectations and carried forward. All this is because of the good policy of reform.

In 2010, Elder Ben Hwan was elected as the honorary president of the Buddhist Association. In the first half of his life, the old monk was determined to practice asceticism, participating in the study of sutras, sitting in meditation, kneeling and worshiping Wutai, writing sutras with blood stabbing, burning arms and filial piety, advocated human Buddhism, and was respected as a master of Buddhism. In the second half of his life, he traveled in China and abroad, walked in all directions, worked hard to build temples and monks, and he can be regarded as a great master of Buddhism.

It was April 2, 2012, at 0:36, Elder Ben Huan, who was patriotic and apologetic. In the Hongfa Temple in Shenzhen, it is quiet and peaceful. His lifetime is 106 years old and the monk is 83 years old. We excerpt a section of the seventh teaching of Zen by Elder Benhuan, which was given at Lingquan Temple in Taiwan in 1995, as follows:

Since we all chose to become a monk, why? Or can't live anymore, so he became a monk. When we become a monk, we should have a big ambition and determination, not for anything else, but for the sake of understanding our mind, for the sake of life and death, and for the sake of becoming a Buddha and becoming an ancestor.

However, it is not a simple matter to understand one's mind and become an ancestor. What is the reason for this? Because now is the end of era. When the Buddha was alive, his roots as a monk were very good, and his practice was easy to accomplish.

In this era of the end of the Dharma, the karma of sentient beings is very heavy, the roots are very shallow, and the roots of goodness are very thin. For example, in the Tang Dynasty, many enlightened patriarchs often became enlightened in one sentence in their practice.

Why are we still unable to enlighten after we have cultivated and cultivated? It is only our own karma that is too deep and the roots of goodness are meager. However, despite this, it is not easy for us to be able to obtain human bodies today, to be able to listen to the Dharma, and to become a monk. Please cherish it.

When we practice, we must know how to be suspicious. It is to ask yourself "who is the person who recites the Buddha", and look into the word "who".

keeps participating repeatedly. As long as we bring up the doubts, the kung fu will come forward. Why do we need to be suspicious? The ancients said: "A big doubt leads to great enlightenment, a small doubt leads to a small enlightenment, and no doubt does not enlighten." Only when we have doubts can we be enlightened. You have to participate until there is no doubt, no enlightenment, and the ability to both die, so that the bottom of the bucket can fall off, and you can see the nature of your heart.

In addition, Buddhism has no distinction between high and low, and treats everyone equally. Practitioners should remove the tribute and self-slowness, because "modesty makes people progress, and pride makes people fall behind." You don’t want me to post it. The benefits are yours. Everyone eats and everyone is full. Everyone is dead. No one can replace you. Everyone, go and work hard! Okay, we have finished introducing all the stories about Elder Benhuan. Thank you for watching.
