On January 2, 1999, in the main hall of Tonghui Chanlin Temple in Jiuhua Mountain, when the abbot Sishang opened the master's seating tank, the body of the Renyi Master , who had passed away for 38 months, was intact in front of everyone.
From a close perspective, you can find that although Master Renyi's body has dried and shrunk, her skin, teeth, and nails are generally preserved intact, and her waist and body are still elastic.
However, she has no feminine characteristics: breasts disappear and breasts are flat.

Looking from a distance, Master Renyi was sitting cross-legged and worshiping Buddha devoutly.
This makes people marvel at the time when her body has not rotted for many years. It was from this day that the first bhikkhun (nun) body finally appeared in the history of Chinese Buddhism.
So, what did Master Renyi do during his lifetime? What happened to her?

was born in troubled times and was forced to become a monk
The common name of Renyi Master is Jiang Sumin , and was born in Shenyang, Liaoning in 1911.
She has a relatively wealthy family and likes to read and write since she was a child, and when she was 7 years old, she started to study with her husband. During this period, she was diligent and hardworking and read a lot of books and learned to play music, chess, calligraphy and painting.
Her parents saw it and felt very happy, so they were determined to cultivate her into a knowledgeable and well-educated rich and talented woman. However, while young and ignorant, she became obsessed with Buddhism culture while studying.
And often sneaks to a temple near a private school to listen to the monks in the yard chanting scriptures and giving lectures.
During this period, she met several monks and asked them for some Buddhist issues on weekdays.
When they went back and forth, the abbot of the temple saw that she loved studying Buddhist scriptures so much, so he gave her several Buddhist books such as the Heart Sutra and the Great Compassion Mantra, and also explained the contents in the book in detail.

In return, she immediately took some food and money from her home and sent it to the temple. In this regard, her parents felt that this was a good deed, so they did not interfere too much. But Master Renyi's parents did not agree with her studying Buddhism and reading scriptures!
But Master Renyi was kind-hearted and worked hard at the time. He had no bad records except for his liking Buddhism. She was the jewel in her parents' eyes. Seeing that she insisted on doing this, her parents no longer obstructed them too much!
After that, she went to the temple every few days to listen to Buddhist scriptures. Once, when she accidentally saw the abbot of the temple use herbs picked from the mountain to heal the water-carrying monk, she immediately had the idea of studying medicine to save people.
Next, while she was devoted to studying Buddhism, she began to read related medical books and gradually became very interested in traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture.
During this period, she often tried to acupuncture herself, resulting in a tiny needle hole on her left arm.
The monks in the temple couldn't help laughing when they saw it, but they praised her for her hard work and hard work in studying medicine.

Time passes quickly, and more than ten years have passed in a blink of an eye. At this time, she had married into Tonghua, Jilin, formed her own family, and lived a happy life.
But at that time, the war was in chaos, and everyone was tortured and destroyed by wandering and dying. Master Renyi also suffered a lot during this period!
In 1940, she moved to Mount Wutai, Shanxi. In the dilemma of having no relatives and no pennilessness, she went to the local Xiantong Temple to become a monk and officially became a nun. She was named "Renyi". People at that time called her Master Renyi.
From then on, she devoted herself to Buddhism and studied medical skills in the temple.

However, due to the limitations of conditions, Master Renyi felt that his medical skills had not made much progress after a period of time.
When facing people who are seriously ill and seriously injured, she could only watch them suffer from the pain of injury, and silently worry in her heart. Therefore, she decided to leave Mount Wutai and go out to study medicine.
With the help of the abbot of Xiantong Temple, Master Renyi entered Shenyang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1942.
Here she reads medical books, studies medicine diligently, and takes a full four years to finally learn a skilled medical skills. At the same time, she also treated many local patients and was unanimously recognized by everyone.
After the outbreak of the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea, Renyi Shita signed up for the first time to participate in the Volunteer Army . In 1951, she crossed the Yalu River as a field doctor and followed the troops into North Korea.
On the battlefield, whenever she saw a volunteer soldier falling to the ground due to injury, she would carry a medical box and run towards the front line without fear of the enemy's fierce artillery fire.

Once, she was treating the wounded on the front line, but unexpectedly she was shot by an enemy bullet and injured her arm. At this time, she endured the severe pain and knelt on the ground and bandaged the wounds wholeheartedly.
When the wounded pointed at her bloody arm, Master Renyi simply said: She would just treat her wound later.
In addition, Master Renyi, who has been traveling on the battlefield all day long, has been in an extremely dangerous situation many times. But at every critical moment when her life is at stake, she always puts her life and death aside and protects the wounded wholeheartedly.
Doctors are kind-hearted and cured and saved people
One night on the battlefield of resisting U.S. aggression and aiding Korea, the enemy on the opposite side suddenly launched an attack, and the dark night sky was instantly illuminated by flares and artillery fire.
Just as the troops were moving their positions, a volunteer soldier was slow to move because he was carrying arms and supplies. Unfortunately, he was hit by the enemy's shells and lay on the ground and struggled desperately but could not move.
After seeing this, Master Renyi turned his head and went back to treat him.
But the soldier knew that he was too seriously injured and begged Master Renyi to abandon him, but asked her to ask others to carry the baggage away quickly so as not to fall into the hands of the enemy. Unexpectedly, after the bandage of Master Renyi, he tried his best to drag the wounded and his baggage away.

However, the battlefield is in the cold winter season of ice and snow, and the weather is extremely bad. Although Master Renyi wanted to take away all the wounded and the baggage, he had the will but lacked strength.
And the enemy's artillery fire is getting closer and closer, and the situation is extremely dangerous. Fortunately, after she had a difficult journey, she was finally discovered by two other volunteer soldiers and was able to leave the battlefield quickly with their assistance.
However, although they moved to a safe place, the injured person eventually died of excessive bleeding due to excessive injuries.
Master Renyi kept blaming himself for this. In fact, everyone knows in their hearts that the conditions for marching and combat are too difficult. As a field doctor, Master Renyi can go to the front line to rescue the wounded without hesitation.
This is already a very respectable act, and there is no such thing as dereliction of duty at all. Besides, no one has time to express his gratitude to her.

And such deeds happened many times during the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea.
Because of this, even if the soldiers of the Volunteer Army succeeded in victory in the war, they could clearly recall the touching scene of Renyi Shita saving lives and helping the wounded on the battlefield regardless of his personal safety.
After the victory of the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea, Master Renyi was arranged to work as a doctor at the 206 Hospital in Tonghua, Jilin. Since then, she officially began her career as a doctor for decades.
And because of her excellent medical skills, she was sent to a key hospital to work. In order to help more patients, she also opened a clinic to treat and administer medicine to poor people.

What’s more interesting during this period is that she had an indissoluble bond with a pair of stone millstones. Of course, this was not an ordinary stone millstone, but a special medical device she used to grind herbs at that time.
In her eyes, this pair of stone millstones are like a treasure. No matter where she went to practice medicine, she tried every means to bring it with her.
In this regard, someone asked her curiously why she often brought this heavy stone with her. She shook her head and immediately expressed in a strong Northeast accent:
With this stone mill, many picked Chinese herbal medicines can be ground into very fine and even powders, and then pills with accurate proportions of various medicinal materials can be prepared. This is the only way to cure the patient's illness more effectively.

At the beginning, those who laughed at her for "not seeing a doctor but only know how to grind her" immediately lowered their heads in shame after listening to her explanation and sincerely apologized to Master Renyi.
But not only did she not take it seriously, she also asked the people around her to help her go up the mountain to collect herbs and grind herbs, so everyone also learned how to make pills.
However, some people sarcastically said to her: "Every time you change to a new place, just buy a stone millstone in the local area. You have money in your hands, so there is no need to carry it all the time, just throw it away!"
Although Master Renyi felt a little unhappy about this, he still said calmly:
"It's a pity to throw it away directly! Besides, even if you go to a new place, you may not be able to buy it immediately. . But the patient was anxious to take medicine at this time and could not wait for a moment. If he couldn't find the stone millstone, how could I go to make medicine? "

Regarding the money issue, Master Renyi continued to add: "Money is used to purchase special medicinal materials and cannot be used randomly. This is not my personal money, but money used to treat everyone." After hearing this, people around him nodded and praised her kind-hearted spirit of the doctor. In this way, Master Renyi always regarded this graphite plate as a treasure along the way of medical treatment and refused to throw it away at will.
Re-education of the Zen Temple and saving all living beings
1983, Master Renyi, who practiced medicine all the way, saw that the incense of Jiuhua Mountain was constantly in full swing, so he decided to stay here, while treating locals and practicing Zen and worshiping Buddha. At the beginning, she lived upstairs in Bodhi Pavilion and got along well with Master Kuan downstairs.
However, because Master Renyi taught the Buddhist scriptures very wonderfully, and he also saw a doctor and prescribed medicine, which was very popular among the majority of pilgrims, the Bodhi attic where she was located was filled with incense all day long, and pilgrims were endless.
, which caused some dissatisfaction from Master Kuan, who had been practicing Zen here for decades.
Therefore, the two of them occasionally have some unhappiness due to incense problems. However, at this time, Master Renyi always faces the unnecessary quarrel in front of him with a tolerant and generous attitude.
One day, while she was collecting herbs in the mountains, she accidentally discovered a temple Tonghui Zen Forest .

Although the Zen temple was disrepaired at that time, with broken stones, broken wood, and scrap bricks everywhere, and a scene of rags, Master Renyi believed that the environment here was quiet and elegant, and it was a rare place to practice Zen and worship Buddha and cultivate one's own character.
is in Tonghui Zen Forest. Looking at the gurgling stream in front of the courtyard and the towering ancient trees around it, Master Renyi couldn't help but be deeply impressed by the winding path in front of him, the Zen meaning of birds singing with the fragrance of flowers. So she made a wish and decided to do her best to re-educate the Zen temple.
Immediately afterwards, Master Renyi began to run around, busy handling the approval procedures for the re-repair of the temple, and personally handled the procurement of building materials. During the re-cultivation of Tonghui Zen Forest, she was seen checking the construction of the project on site every day.
Even if it is a stone tablet or a piece of wood, she must carefully consider the most suitable placement.
It took about two years to finish the Tonghui Zen Forest, and the treasure land was renovated. That day, Master Renyi looked at the newly cultivated Zen temple in front of him, and his face was filled with relief and joy.

Although repairing the Zen Temple took her life's income, when she thought of the brand new Tonghui Zen Forest, which incorporated all her efforts, she naturally felt an incomparable pride and satisfaction. After
, in order to continue to promote Buddhism and cure diseases and save lives, Master Renyi took several disciples down the mountain despite her age.Passing through Anhui, Henan, Hebei, Shanxi and other places, we came to Mount Wutai again.

Along the way, she devoted all her efforts to build temples, provide medicine, preach Buddhism, make connections with all living beings, and save herself while saving countless people.
, especially some ordinary people living at the bottom of society, with the encouragement of Master Renyi, are re-full of hope and confidence in the difficult days in front of you.
In April 1995, Master Renyi returned to the Tonghui Zen Forest of Jiuhua Mountain from Mount Wutai.
After that, she meditated in the temple and ate vegetarian food and worshipped Buddha. In her free time, she will personally teach her disciples some acupuncture and teach them to devote themselves to studying Buddhism and medicine, so as to save sentient beings and save people and cure diseases.
The ordinary days passed day by day. However, just a few months later, Master Renyi suddenly felt that there was not much time left, so he began to meditate wholeheartedly without eating or drinking. After 7 days, he summoned the disciples of the Zen Temple to give explanations and passed away quietly!

On the night when Master Renyi passed away, the disciples of the Tonghui Zen Forest recited the scriptures until very late before going back to rest. They hoped to use this to commemorate Master Renyi who did good deeds throughout their lives.
After reciting the scriptures, Master Renyi’s disciple, Master Sishang, prepared the items needed to "sit in the jar" according to the master’s last wishes and put the master’s Dharma body into the jar!
Until at 3 pm on January 2, 1999, when the new abbot of Tonghui Zen Forest, Master Sishang, opened the seating tank, the body of Master Renyi, who had passed away for 38 months, was intact in front of everyone.

We can see from a close perspective that although Master Renyi's body has dried and shrunk, her skin, teeth, and nails are still well preserved, and her waist and body are still elastic. However, she has no feminine characteristics: her breasts disappear and her breasts are flat.
At the same time, there is a detail that makes people move, that is, Master Renyi's right hand slightly raised, and his thumb and index finger were twisted into needles. This action was obviously the gesture of her performing acupuncture therapy for the patient during her lifetime.
And from a distance, Master Renyi looked like he was sitting cross-legged and worshiping Buddha devoutly. This made people wonder that her body had not been corrupted for many years, and she couldn't help but feel respectful.
In addition, it is more worth mentioning that it was from this day that the first bhikkhuni body finally appeared in the history of Chinese Buddhism.

Conclusion:
Master Renyi once said during his lifetime that whenever he saw a patient suffering, she felt very sad.
Sincerely speaking, she never wanted to see the slightest pain and sorrow of the world in her life doing good deeds. Because of this, she always practices the mission of benevolence of doctors with a spirit of no fate and great compassion.

Today, although Master Renyi is no longer there, her teachings are deeply engraved in the hearts of all the disciples of Tonghui Zen Forest and the people she has rescued.
believes that under the guidance of the new abbot of Tonghui Chanlin, all the disciples will definitely uphold the will of Master Renyi, continue to preach Buddhism, be kind and generous, and save oneself and others.
