Speaking of monks, most people have the impression that they are sitting in temples all day long chanting sutras and worshiping Buddhas, not caring about the world, even greedy monks just encircle land, cheating on incense, oil, and money, and not even killing animals, let alone killing people. However, during the , the Southern and Northern Dynasties, a group of monks took up weapons, attacked the government, occupied the land, enjoyed killing, and even put forward the slogan "The murderer was named Bodhisattva".
During the Southern and Northern Dynasties, Buddhism developed rapidly. Whether it is Southern Dynasties or Northern Dynasties , they all attached great importance to Buddhism, but this kind of attention is different. For some Buddhist organizations with great influence or good relations with the government, the government focused on supporting them. They could often meet the emperor and often receive rewards from the court. Not only did they make money from indulgence and oil, but the court often built temples for them with public funds, and often gave them various gifts such as land, slaves, Buddha statues, etc. These monks had a large number of slaves to serve them, and they rented a large amount of land, which was not only rich, but also various privileges.
However, most of the poor monks and some monks are disgusted with Buddhist organizations that are close to the government. These people have been suppressed by the government and Buddhism, and even eating has become a problem. They need to be exported to beg for alms to survive. It is no different from beggars, and they are not allowed to gather to worship Buddha. Life is very difficult. The situation in the Southern Dynasties was better, the polarization was not too serious, and the contradictions were not big. The monks in the Northern Dynasties were very, very miserable, and they were even worse than animals. In this way, more and more serious polarization was formed among the group of monks in the Northern Dynasties, and social contradictions quickly intensified.
At the beginning, only a few lower-level monks attacked the temples built by the government, burned temples, and burned scriptures, and expressed their protest in this way. However, the government directly sent troops to suppress them. After being suppressed, most of the lower-level monks were not convinced, so they began to organize small-scale rebellion operations. Later, the scale became larger and larger. This was the real monk rebelled, not the monks like Zhu Yuanzhang who returned to the secular army like those of Zhu Yuanzhang .
Starting from 473 AD, the monk Huiyin rebelled. monk means a Buddhist, which is a monk. He was easily suppressed by the court of the Northern Wei Dynasty. In 481 AD, the monk Faxiu organized a rebellion in Pingcheng, the capital of the Northern Wei Dynasty. Most of the participants were lower-class monks, civilians, slaves, and a small number of bureaucrats and members of aristocratic families. He was easily suppressed by the court of the Northern Wei Dynasty. In 490 AD, the monk Sima Huiyu claimed to be the holy king, rebelled in Pingyuan County, and led the rebel army to capture Pingyuan City. He was suppressed soon. In 514 AD, the monk Liu Sengshao claimed to be the Dharma King of Jingju Kingdom, and rebelled in Youzhou , and was suppressed soon.
In June 515 AD, Fa Qing and Huihui, two monks of Jizhou, joined forces with Li Guibo, a local tycoon in Bohai, to launch an uprising, conquered Fucheng , and killed the magistrate of Fucheng County. Jizhou is the current Hebei County, Hebei, Bohai is the current Hebei Ningjin, and Fucheng is the current Fucheng County County, Hengshui City, Hebei. Faqing conferred Li Guibo as the Ten-dwelling Bodhisattva, Pingmo Army Office, Dinghan King, and established the country's name Mahayana. He then defeated the Northern Wei officers and soldiers who came to encircle and suppress the enemy in the Zaoqiang area of Hebei, killed Cui Bojian, and then besieged the Bohai Sea and captured the city of Leling County.
Most of Faqing's uprising troops were lower-level monks and civilians, and their combat effectiveness was low. So Faqing brainwashed them and set military rules, killing one person as a Bodhisattva of One Destiny, killing ten people as a Bodhisattva of Ten Destiny, and so on. The more people they kill, the higher the Bodhisattva's title. Then Faqing took the lead and married a nun as his wife, rewarding a large number of nuns and prisoners of war to brave men who fought bravely. In order to become a Bodhisattva and marry his wife, the rebels were all bloodthirsty and willing to kill, and were not afraid of death.
Then Faqing put forward the slogan "New Buddha is born, get rid of all demons", burning the temple, burning the scriptures, and all monks were killed. The uprising won consecutive battles and soon grew to more than 50,000 people. However, Faqing's uprising army did not distinguish between all temples and monks, and all harmed them. Moreover, in order to obtain the number of murders, the uprising army became a high-level Bodhisattva and harmed civilians in large numbers. Gradually, the uprising army lost the hearts of the people and was boycotted by the people and other Buddhist organizations.
In July, the Northern Wei court sent yuan Yao as the governor of the Northern Expedition, leading a 100,000 army to Jizhou, united local armed forces to suppress the uprising. Soon Faqing died in battle. On September 14, Huihui and hundreds of leaders were arrested and killed alive, and officers and soldiers massacred more than 10,000 rebels. Li Guibo hid and was soon arrested and killed. The remnants of the Mahayana Army were forced to cross the Zhang River and flee to Yingzhou area, which is now Hejian City, Hebei. It lasted until 517 that it was completely suppressed.
This large-scale monk rebellion affected most areas of Hebei, with a maximum force of more than 50,000 troops, which severely hit the rule of the Northern Wei court. After the uprising was suppressed, the Northern Wei court strengthened local management and gave certain policies such as relief and reduction of military taxes, in an attempt to alleviate social conflicts, but these measures did not fundamentally solve the problem of polarization. A few years later, a larger-scale Liuzhen Uprising broke out in the north. Although the Six Town Uprising also failed, it seriously shook the rule of the Central Court of the Northern Wei Dynasty. Two major military groups led by Yuwen Tai and Gao Huan rose strongly, and finally split the in 534.
So monks are also humans. There are only a very small number of monks who can reach the ethereal realm. Most monks are not completely ignored in the world. Monks will rebel if they are forced into an urgent matter. Moreover, compared with ordinary people, monks kill people more ruthlessly, so you must pay attention that polarization cannot be too serious, otherwise it is easy to cause chaos.
