This article let’s learn about the ways to use the Heart Sutra to cure fear. We can check many cases from many channels, including reading or reciting the Heart Sutra, and eliminating various fears and psychological problems, including individual cases of symptoms of social fear.
Although the Heart Sutra is not long, only 260 words in a short place, its content is very profound and very complex. In this section, we only understand the Heart Sutra from a few sentences and points. Among them, the most famous one is "form is not different from emptiness, emptiness is not different from form." The "color" mentioned in the sentence
is not erotic color. The "color" here refers to matter or real things, real things and various manifestations, which are called "color".
"Empty" is the core idea that the entire Heart Sutra wants to express.
There is a saying in it: ", the five aggregates, are all empty." Among the five aggregates, form is one of them, namely, form, feeling, thought, action, and consciousness are the five aggregates, which are the five parts of the body. Form refers to tangible substances such as muscles and bones. We understand it as color. Form and emptiness correspond to, "Form is not different from emptiness, emptiness is not different from form", which means that form and emptiness are essentially one, and there is no difference.
color, we know that the physiological body can be understood as color. What does empty mean? Empty is not non-existent, it does not negate existence, nor does it not exist. These simple understandings are all wrong. "Empty" means no self-nature, or cannot exist absolutely and independently, and can only exist on certain conditions.
What does self-nature mean? It is the inherent characteristics of things. The so-called self-nature. It means it does not have its eternal nature, that is, it cannot exist forever.
For example, for example, red color, red, we can think that the red on the surface of an object is its characteristic, or its nature, it is its nature.
But in fact, red is just a reflection of light , which is just a physical phenomenon. For example, colors can be divided into red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Among them, red is just a wavelength between 640 and 780 nanometers. Such a long wavelength light will appear red after being reflected into the human eye. We define it as red, and its name is red.
But in fact, red is just a phenomenon, and its essence does not exist. Or, can we think that its essence is the wavelength of visible light within a certain range, and we define the cost essence? Actually, not.
For example, people with social phobia, red face phobia, , and red face phobia, their faces are usually normal, yellow, white, and red. However, when social phobia occurs, they become red, and the red face turns red. When these symptoms are relieved, they become normal, natural, and very beautiful skin.
So we can't say that red is fixed and unchanged, just be determined to be red, which is its characteristics, which is wrong.
is understood from the meaning of "emptiness", which means no self-nature. It is just a manifestation and a phenomenon, and its essence does not really exist. We understand this as "emptiness".
Another understanding of "emptiness, anything does not exist absolutely, cannot exist independently, it exists according to cause and condition.
A thing, we can see it and touch it, it is very real, but what is said here does not mean absolute existence? It means it depends on the cause and condition of its existence. If its cause and condition no longer exist, it will no longer exist.
For example, a glass cup is placed on the table, which falls to the ground and breaks, and it is a pile of broken glass, which is no longer called a cup. Because the cause and condition of the cup no longer exists, the cup will no longer exist.
or a more appropriate example, using dreams as a metaphor. Does dreams exist? Of course, dreams exist in our consciousness during sleep. However, after waking up, does this dream really exist? In fact, it also exists according to causes and conditions. When you are sleeping, the causes and conditions of dreams are complete, and some images form in your mind, some thinking activities, etc. This is called dreaming.
and this similar example, for example, the shadow of a human has a shadow under the sunlight, and the shadow exists according to the sun and your body. Natural phenomena including rainbows, lightning, etc., all exist due to the causes and conditions at that time. In essence, we say that they do not exist absolutely. We understand that "emptiness" in the Heart Sutra means this.
There are many examples, and anything is no exception. You can use this Luo Ji to apply it. For example, the vegetables we eat need to plant seeds, and then there must be soil, moisture, and a certain amount of time so that we can grow. What is the so-called cause and condition here? It means having the right temperature and humidity. If any cause and effect does not exist, it will not grow into a vegetable that we can eat. The same is true for us. The cause and effect of our human existence is that our parents initially produce fertilized eggs by sperm and eggs, and then they divide and grow through cells and grow into a physiological person. After being born, they will grow, age and die, which will inevitably occur. This is a natural process.
This process also exists according to various causes and conditions, constantly changing causes and conditions, and these causes and conditions exist according to these causes and conditions. This is the meaning of "emptiness" mentioned in the Heart Sutra.
can also be simply understood as: nothing is eternal, things will always change, impermanent, and change with various causes and conditions. This is called emptiness. We define this phenomenon, this property, and this property as empty.
What does "form is not different from emptiness, emptiness is not different from color" mean? That is, anything visible is changing and exists according to causes and conditions, neither absolute nor eternal, this is a very simple understanding.
The real deeper understanding is the philosophical level or even higher level. It is difficult for us to explain clearly. We do not say it in detail. Later, it is mentioned in the Heart Sutra that the visible objects, the so-called "color", and the tangible matter are all like this.
The Heart Sutra mentions that "the five aggregates are empty", and then "feeling, thinking, action and consciousness are the same." As mentioned above, the five aggregates are form, feeling, perception, action, and consciousness, which are five physical or physiological phenomena.
"color" we have talked about, it is visible and actually includes physiological things. We call it color.
"Test" is feeling, feeling, and awareness, which is a psychological phenomenon.
"Thinking" is thinking, thinking activity.
"Road" is an action and action.
"Knowledge" is consciousness.
These four are called "feeling, thinking, volition, and consciousness". In fact, these four are all psychological contents. "feeling, thinking, volition and consciousness are also the same" means that just like "form is not different from emptiness", "feeling, thinking, volition and consciousness" is actually of emptiness.
emptity, we just understood that according to this logic, it is to "feeling, thinking, action, and consciousness" that our feelings, thoughts, behaviors, and consciousness are not eternal. They will change according to cause and condition, and will not exist independently. You cannot say "I want to be happy" out of thin air, and then, I can be happy. Feeling, like a happy emotion, depends on cause and condition, and there are things that make you happy, so that you can feel happy.
This is called feeling. Like form, it is also emptiness, which exists according to cause and condition, is not absolute, and is not eternal, and has no absolute or substantial meaning. "See, thinking, action and consciousness are also the same" means "feel, thinking, action and consciousness" is also empty.
In this sense, we understand it, just like dreams and hallucinations, wind, rain, thunder and lightning, our human existence can also be understood by the view of emptiness, and can be understood as the existence of "like dreams and illusions", which does not exist, just as we just declared and explained, emptiness does not exist, emptiness does not negate existence, emptiness is manifested, visible, and sensible, it only exists according to cause and condition, not independent existence.
Our normal life can be understood in this way and we can establish such insights. We are in dreams and illusions. We are pursuing, studying hard, and striving like dreams and illusions. We will also have various gains. These gains are actually dreams and illusions, or emptiness.
We are in dreamlike success! Dreamlike failure! We are in happiness like a dream!
In this way, it is easier to do it with the "going with the flow and doing what you should do" emphasized in Morita's therapy, because you no longer be obsessed with these things, because these things essentially exist according to causes and conditions, and do not exist independently or in absolute terms, and can all be changed.
In this way, you can not be attached, and you can go with the flow without attachment. Because you do not be attached, you can also do the following in the Heart Sutra: "The mind is free of worries. Because there is no worries, there is no fear, and stay away from inverted dreams."
Because you have no worries in your heart, no attachment, no one who sees it very seriously, and no one who can't let go, then you will definitely not have too many worries or concerns, and there will be no fear without worries. This is very normal.
There will be no fear without attachment. In particular, it is not self-natured, and it exists according to causes and conditions, and it is not eternal.
Because of this view, we believe that we can go from being sick (because of certain causes and conditions) to being sick; conversely, we can also go from being sick because of some causes and conditions to change, our illness will be cured. This is the treatment process, and it is also in line with the previous insights of emptiness.
Understand a little bit of what we are talking about today, and you can understand it. Then recite it every day. Just recite and read it aloud can improve our mental health level. This is an incredible thing.
