Architecture is a shooting subject that many photography enthusiasts like. So how can we take unique and more outstanding architectural photos? In addition to focusing and exposure control, the most basic and most important thing should be considered composition.
Even some unpleasant buildings can still produce high-end effects as long as the composition is appropriate. Below I will share architectural photography compositions that turn decay into magic, hoping to inspire you.
1. Guide line composition
Human eyes have always been more sensitive to lines. Using some lines to guide the reader's sight and direct the reader's attention to the subject or depth of the picture of the photo, it is a relatively common and effective composition method.
The lines on the building are relatively rich. Whether it is the appearance or internal structure of the building, many guide lines can be found, such as the most typical columns, stairs, etc.
2. Upward shot/down shot
The picture above is the caisson of a pavilion I took in the Forbidden City . The picture below is the effect of me shooting downward on the high floor of a hotel. Many times, some very ordinary scenes can show different effects by changing from an unusual angle.
You can also take photos of some outdoor scenes of tall buildings, standing in the building group and taking photos upwards. The exaggerated perspective effect will make the building look more magnificent, and the effect of shooting with ultra-wide-angle lenses will be more significant. In addition, this perspective can also avoid the messy scenery on the ground and the interference of passers-by, thereby taking a clean picture.
Select the appropriate scene and shoot downwards to capture interesting pictures, such as spiral staircase in the building. Of course, waiting (or arranging) a character to the right place can make your photos more vivid.
3. At the intersection of lines,
The above picture is the effect of me taking a photo below the C column of the Beijing Daxing International Airport. Many straight lines and curves of different colors and shapes gather around the blue skylight, making the effect more eye-catching.
4. Learn to leave blank
There is a technique in literary creation called leaving blank, which can also be applied in photography. The method to leave blank space during shooting is to leave blank, such as the picture below.
The blank part is not necessarily empty, it can be the sky, green space, or the sea. Making good use of blank space can not only increase the imagination and layering of the entire picture, but also make the picture more grand.
5. Framework composition
creates a sense of obstruction through the frame-like foreground, focusing readers' attention on unobstructed pictures. This composition is frame-like composition.
The picture above I was shooting the effect of the opposite city tower in an arched city gate hole in Jiayuguan. The picture below shows the effect of photographing the Meridian Gate of the Forbidden City through the hollowing in the railing. Especially the pictures taken through some narrow frames will also have a "peeping feeling", which will easily arouse readers' curiosity.
Of course, this framework also does not necessarily have to be the structure of the building itself. You can also find some other scenery with beauty, such as flowers, branches of trees, etc. as shades to place it in the foreground. You can also choose a small depth of field as needed to blur the foreground. If the above content is helpful to you, please follow, like and forward support.
