When I was in junior high school, my second brother and I stayed in my father's unit. Generally, we went home on Saturday afternoons, and most of the second brother took me with us on a bicycle.
One summer, the sky was clear, but on the way home, my second brother and I suddenly started to rain heavily, wet both of us and the road became muddy.
When we walked to a village called Liujia, there was a section of the road in the village that was very low and the running water was not deep, so it was impossible to get by riding a bicycle. A farmer set up a piece of wooden board on the road, and people could pass through it, but they would charge 20 cents. My second brother and I didn’t bring any money when we came out. We didn’t expect that we would encounter this situation. What should we do? It wouldn't work to discuss with the farmer.
The mountain flowers in my hometown
At this time, I saw an overpass not far from us to pass by. The inside of the bridge is used to transport flowing water from the Songhua River to irrigate the farmland. My second brother didn't come up with a good idea, so he had to do what I said.
We walked around the village before we came to the side of the overpass. When we walked up to it, we saw that the overpass was five or six meters high from the ground, and the width of both sides of the bridge was only thirty centimeters. My second brother and I were also a little worried and afraid, but we were still determined to go over the bridge. So my second brother moved forward slowly with his bicycle. I followed my second brother. When I moved, my legs were trembling. As I walked, my second brother told me not to look down. When my feet were firm, I moved slowly as my second brother said. We walked the 15-meter-long bridge for more than twenty minutes and finally crossed the bridge. We both were scared and sweated in cold sweat when we crossed the bridge.
When we went home and told our parents about this incident, our parents were very angry with the farmer. My parents said to us with a worried look: "My parents will definitely bring you some money in the future to prevent such things from happening again."
My second brother and I were risky when crossing the bridge this time. Once we stepped on empty feet, we would fall under the bridge and we would lose our lives.
The clear river in my hometown
This incident has been going on for more than thirty years, but I cannot forget that thrilling journey. At that time, I felt sorry for the hardships of farmers' lives, but I was also angry with the farmers' awareness of small farmers. In their hearts, there was only money, and there was no sense of helping others.
I am even more angry with the inaction of the local government departments. I have collected a lot of money for road construction every year, but I just don’t build roads. It caused great inconvenience to local farmers. I remember when I went home to visit my parents after joining the army, the road was still the same. Every time I went home, the most worried thing was the road conditions. In the past few years, there has been no change at all!
The biggest wish at that time was that one day I had the ability to repair that road so that the children who went to school like me would no longer be confused! I also hope that all the children in my hometown can study hard, make more contributions to the country and society in the future, and benefit the people in my hometown!
