When the PCle4.0 product is fighting happily, PCle5.0, which belongs to the next era, is quietly coming. Since the second half of last year, in addition to some major international manufacturers launching new products, domestic SSD manufacturers represented by Baocun Technology are also following the trend and deploying the next track.
The next generation SSD will be released soon
"PCle NVMe SSD Gen5 series products have been tested internally and are expected to be launched on the market in the middle of next year." Jiang Hai, deputy director of product research and development of Baocun Technology, said in an interview with IT168 reporter that compared with the previous generation of products, Gen5 has stronger performance and faster reading and writing speed.
As we all know, the PCIe1.0 standard was released in 2003, with a transmission rate of 2.5GT/s per channel. Four years later, the PCIe2.0 standard was born, with the transmission rate per channel reaching 5.0GT/s, and the transmission capacity doubled. In 2010, the PCIe3.0 standard was launched with a transmission rate of 8.0GT/s; in 2017, the PCIe4.0 standard had a transmission rate of 16GT/s; in 2019, the PCIe5.0 standard reached 32GT/s. From the perspective of evolutionary route, it basically takes several years to iterate, and each iteration will bring double the bandwidth.
Under the new standard, the underlying architecture and ecology of the data center will undergo fundamental changes. Computation pooling and network pooling will be formed at the infrastructure levels such as CPU, GPU, DPU, software, and storage, which means that enterprise-level SSD solid-state drives will face greater challenges. Therefore, although the PCle 5.0 version product is about to be released, it does not mean that there is no chance for the PCle 4.0 product. Because, from product design, testing to release, there is still a period of time that a series of technical difficulties such as performance and power consumption need to be overcome.
In April this year, Baocun Technology's PCle NVMe Gen4 SP4E/SP4X series solid-state drive began to achieve mass production. With the help of the parent company Huirong Technology's SM8266 main control solution, it is equipped with 16 channels, which can release the PCle bus to evolve to Gen4's higher speed performance and solve more IO bottlenecks. PCle NVMe Gen4 solid-state drive uses the performance optimization algorithm firmware unique to Cun Technology, which can better meet the high read IOPs, low latency and high durability requirements required for enterprise-level storage. At the same time, with 3D eTLC flash memory, the maximum capacity can reach 7.68TB.
PCle NVMe Gen4 SP4E/SP4X brings high read IOPs, low latency and high durability capabilities to enterprise-level storage, and can fully meet the performance needs of various workloads in data centers, including databases, OLTP/OLAP, cloud computing , big data analysis, high-frequency trading and retrieval, etc. Among them, the support for databases not only includes atomic writing capabilities, but also further enhances compression. Overall, its performance in low latency and performance can be fully benchmarked against international manufacturers.
. About PLCh, QLC and TLC
As the saying goes, "Storage device capacity is king", so how do you choose the various particle technologies of 3D NAND for the next generation of Baocun Technology?
In Jiang Hai's view, the number of layers of 3D TLC is still growing, and its overall performance is better than QLC and PLC. Because QLC and PLC are also extended based on TLC, and become different particle units after debugging. If the number of layers of the TLC itself is constantly expanding, the existence of PLC and QLC is actually not very meaningful. At present, the progress of PLC and QLC is very slow, and there are still some limitations, such as: the power loss of QLC may lead to data loss. If the user chooses a disk like QLC, it means that the data center cannot be out of power. In fact, this is simply impossible!
That is to say, before the emergence of new media, the evolution of QLC and PLC was very slow, and technical exploration was difficult. Baocun Technology will maintain a developmental vision based on the actual application of users. Whether it is Gen4 or Gen5, it will continue to focus on the 3D TLC technology route.
In the future, if large-capacity QLC SSDs can break through their own bottlenecks, gradually improve their performance and number of layers, and at the same time, the cost can be minimized, Baocun Technology will follow up in time.
pursues performance and service quality
The problem is, from PCIe1.0, PCIe2.0, to today's mainstream PCIe3.0, PCIe4.0, and future PCle5.0, PCle6.0...whether the boundaries of enterprise-level storage? Why do SSD manufacturers have a special liking for speed and performance? In essence, it is closely related to the digital transformation of enterprises!
In Jiang Hai's view, the direct impact of digital economy is the data explosion, especially driven by large infrastructure such as AI, 5G, big data, and autonomous driving. The rapid growth of data has led to the increasing demand for storage for enterprises in all walks of life and the increasing requirements for performance. Especially in modern data center service scenarios, the data volume is large and the workload is complex. The underlying technology not only includes the most core cloud services, but also requires edge computing , edge storage and edge servers to support it. At the same time, large data centers also have the requirements of reducing costs and increasing efficiency, low carbon and environmental protection, so storage products must also keep pace with the times, which can not only meet the storage needs of big data, but also consider comprehensive factors such as economic costs and environmental protection.
Specifically, the next generation of storage products that meet user needs have better performance in high bandwidth, low latency and higher read and write speeds. At the same time, we must use advanced intelligent algorithms to create excellent steady-state QoS. In terms of main control upgrades, we must make full use of NAND's characteristics to provide better steady-state QoS for various enterprise-level IO loads, and fully guarantee the enterprise and data center application experience.
At the same time, data security is also a focus of SSD solid-state drives, and it must be able to provide dual protection capabilities, such as through complete power-down protection, capacitor reliability detection, high-temperature monitoring and protection, etc., to ensure that data is not lost.
It can be said that performance is an important indicator to test the experience of enterprise-level SSD applications, but at the same time, the quality of QS service is also very important. Because, in addition to the constant data communication capabilities and response time requirements, other indicators are also important. For example, if there are bottlenecks on the network test and system side, the performance, stability and reliability of the entire application will be greatly reduced, including data security, protection, etc. Various capabilities are required to combine to evaluate the capabilities of SSD solid-state drives. Will
SSD solid-state drive replace HDD mechanical disk?
IDC data shows that the global revenue of enterprise-grade solid-state drives in 2021 has reached 1.3 times that of traditional mechanical hard drives. So, what is the relationship between SSD solid-state drive and HDD mechanical hard drive, and what is the future direction?
Jiang Hai gave his own judgment! He believes: "In data centers, HDD mechanical hard disks have cost advantages in the short term, but as companies invest more in R&D and explore IOPS and PLCs more and more in-depth, the final share of HDD mechanical hard disks will become smaller and smaller."
In other words, HDD mechanical hard disks may not disappear for a long time, just like the current tape still has a certain share, but the market space will be strongly crushed by SSD solid-state hard disks.
At present, judging from the market performance of Gen4, whether it is the original manufacturer that provides enterprise-level storage, or some main control companies are catching up and striving for the largest market share . In the future, companies with broad market space will definitely be companies with long-term investment in technology. Among the 20 SSD manufacturers around the world, companies that can gain a firm foothold generally have mature technologies and have been working in the storage field for at least 7 years.
, especially after Gen5, the data center architecture has undergone tremendous changes. Enterprise-level SSDs will face challenges in the process, performance and performance of the main control, and enterprises need to have hard-core indicators such as technology accumulation and talent team building.
It is worth mentioning that in addition to providing standard SSD solid-state drives, Baocun Technology also provides customized products, which can fully meet the functions, performance, reading, writing and query needs of large data centers. In terms of customized products, Baocun Technology has cooperated with domestic Internet manufacturers, and will explore more new product cooperation models in the future.
