South Korea: South Korea deploys 5G MEC technology at Incheon International Airport to combat the new coronavirus
South Korea will deploy 5G at Incheon International Airport MEC (Mobile Edge Computing) technology to help combat COVID-19. Like many countries, South Korea has seen a recent surge in COVID-19 cases and the country is generally considered one of the world's most successful in handling the outbreak. Incheon Airport is the largest airport in South Korea and the main gateway into South Korea. China's Ministry of Science and Information and Communications Technology said the system uses artificial intelligence to identify passengers who are not wearing masks and/or people showing symptoms such as high fever or persistent cough. The use of MEC helps to significantly reduce latency, which is crucial when handling large amounts of passenger traffic. In areas where suspected cases are found, the system can automatically dispatch autonomous robots to disinfect the area. The Ministry of Science, Information and Communications Technology will allocate approximately US$108 million over the next few years to support further 5G MEC deployment.
