On the morning of October 9, 2022, the Chinese Giant Tree Science Expedition Team released data. Currently, the accurate height of "China's tallest tree" Yunnan Huangguo Fir is 83.4 meters, and photos of the giant tree are also released.
This Chinese giant tree, Yunnan Huangguo Fir, is also called "Ruber Huangguo Fir". After measurement, its tree is around 380 years old and is still in a healthy growth stage. How is its age measured? How did it get its "waiting photos"? Let’s learn about it together↓↓
reporter Chen Qin: now has 6 adults surrounding the tallest giant tree in China by holding hands. In fact, its breast diameter has been measured before, and it is 207 cm. So there are many interesting scientific mysteries around this giant tree, let’s unravel it together.

Reporter: What is the age of measured based on?
Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences Dr. Wang Zi: Use the lodged rhubarb fir in the surrounding area to intercept its annual rings, and obtain the age corresponding to the breast diameter of this tree through the ratio of its breast diameter to the annual rings. Overall, this tree is a vigorously growing rhubarb fir, and it should be around 380 years old.

Through breast diameter ring measurement and field inverted wood tree wheel survey, the breast diameter of the giant tree reached 207 cm, the tree is around 380 years old, and is currently in the middle of the life cycle. New buds sprout on the treetops are solid and normal, and are still in a healthy growth stage.

If you do not rely on special equipment such as drones, it will be difficult for humans to achieve the full picture of the giant tree with the naked eye. Shooting requires the precise collaboration of four scientific expedition team members.

"China Giant Tree Science Experiment Plan" initiated by Xi Zhinong : The sky now looks good, and the cranes stand out from the crowd have also appeared. Now we start with the second waiting photo from the top to the bottom and can see the rivers below and the large area of forests below.

The famous wildlife photographer Xi Zhinong is the initiator of the "China Giant Tree Scientific Experiment Plan". From big tree azalea in Gaoligong Mountain, Yunnan in 2018, hemlock in Caojian Forest Farm in Yunlong County, Dali in 2019, to 272 meters high bald fir in Gaoligong Mountain, 2021, to 83.4 meters high Yunnan Huangguo Fir 83.4 meters high in Chayu, Tibet, this year, this is his team's fourth time taking photos of giant trees.

"China Giant Tree Science Experiment Plan" initiated by Xi Zhinong: uses a drone to take at least three to six photos every few meters, scan it one by one, and finally reach the top of the tree, and then use it to splice it out later.

This way, more than 160 photos of the giant tree of different heights were obtained and then spliced later. The overall picture of the body photo is more than 350 million pixels, and the screen can be projected on a 100-meter giant screen to show the details of the giant tree. It is not only a precious popular science picture, but also a symbol of nature's endless life.

National Important Wild Plants Germplasm Resource Library Chenshan Center Engineer Zhong Xin: Like many epiphytes grow at the height of the canopy layer, it can fully accept fog and sunshine and moisture, so this Yunnan Huangguo fir has added a very important point to the ecological diversity of this forest.

Initiator of the "China Giant Tree Scientific Expo Plan" Xi Zhinong: I also hope that the most beautiful primeval forest in China, such a unique southeastern Tibet, can be seen by more people. This is a very important thing.
