Ting Zhaozhong is an internationally renowned physicist. He was born in Michigan, USA. He graduated from the University of Michigan . He is a Chinese-American. He was named a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1975. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1976. However, when he delivered a winning speech, Ting Zhaozhong wanted to speak in Chinese, but was strongly opposed by the United States.
When he won the Nobel Prize in Physics , Ding Zhaozhong decided to give a speech in Chinese. Then he went to Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences to find a staff member to report. The other party accepted it happily and expressed his willingness to equip him with an English translator. However, Ding Zhaozhong said he would not use it because he could speak both languages.
However, when the speech was approaching, the US staff sent by the US Embassy to Sweden found Ting Zhaozhong and told him that Sino-US relations were not good and you should not speak in Chinese. Faced with the tough attitude of the US staff, Ting Zhaozhong responded domineeringly, saying, "Chinese is one of the most important languages in the world. I just want to use Chinese, you don't care." Later, during Ting Zhaozhong's more than an hour of speech, he used Chinese throughout the whole process, and Ting Zhaozhong also became the first Chinese Nobel physicist in history to speak in Chinese.
The reason why he gave a speech in Chinese was that he wanted the world to know that "China will definitely be a technological power in the future, and in the future he will contribute his own strength to China's scientific research." In 1994, Ding Zhaozhong was selected as a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and was invited to give speeches at major universities in China. He also often invites Chinese physicists to participate in major international physics research projects and makes his own contribution to the development of Chinese physics. Although Ding Zhaozhong was born in the United States and lives in the United States, he is still full of affection for China. It can be seen that whether a person loves or not is not determined by simply nationality.
