CDC updates guidance on monkeypox transmission to animals
The latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says people should be very careful to avoid spreading the virus to other members of their household, including their pets.
As demand for the monkeypox vaccine increases, the World Health Organization (WHO) has begun receiving preliminary reports on the vaccine's efficacy, suggesting breakthrough cases are occurring, officials said Wednesday.

Some breakthrough cases have been reported in people who have received preventive vaccines after exposure.

Officials noted that the occurrence of such breakthrough infections is not new, explaining that a limited study in the 1980s showed that the vaccines provided about 85% protection against monkeypox.

Nationwide, federal data shows more than 634,000 doses of the JYNNEOS vaccine have been shipped to states and jurisdictions as of Aug. 12.
The number of monkeypox cases detected worldwide continues to grow, with the total increasing by 20% last week, according to the World Health Organization.

In the current monkeypox outbreak, most cases are among gay, bisexual people found in or other men who have sex with men. However, health officials have repeatedly stressed that anyone can become infected with the virus.
