1956, in order to implement Chairman Mao’s instructions on “putting the focus of medical and health work in rural areas”, I was dispatched by the Yun County Health Department and led 5 medical staff to Shiyan to establish Shiyan District Health Center, and the former Shiyan District Health Center staff were transferred back to Yun County. After I came, I first took over the people, money and materials of the original five joint clinics, including 8 old Chinese medicine doctors, 7 Western medicine doctors (parts were repatriated health personnel captured by the Kuomintang), 7 medicine practitioners, and a total of 28 people I brought. A district health center with traditional Chinese medicine as the main and Western medicine as the auxiliary was established in Shiyan Old Street. At that time, there was no house. A total of 8 bungalows were confiscated from a four-home courtyard of the landlord's house. Several departments were set up, including traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis room, Western medicine diagnosis room, treatment room, maternal and child health department, pharmacy and other fees. There were half as doctor duty room. At that time, due to the construction of Baierhe Reservoir, many migrant workers had injuries and illnesses and needed to be hospitalized for treatment. They also rented a two-story building of a landlord next to them for wards, medicine warehouses, Chinese medicine brewing and conference rooms. 12 beds were set up. The conditions were very difficult and the equipment was extremely simple. Western medicine treatment was limited to ordinary headaches and fevers, debridement and sutures, dressing changes, intramuscular injection and needle drip, and delivery of obstetrics. Most diseases were solved with Chinese medicine and oral Western medicine. In addition to the hospital department of Shiyan Old Street, five medical stations were set up in Wuyan, Hongwei, Bailang, Maojian and Shiyan Bridge, and some of the personnel were arranged there to facilitate the public's medical treatment. All medical staff are all-rounders who do multiple jobs, such as seeing a doctor, catching medicine, suturing, changing medicine, taking injections, and delivering babies. They also have to go to the hospital at any time. No matter day or night, no matter how far the road is, as long as the patient's family calls, we will immediately carry our homemade clinic boxes and follow the patient's family. Although the conditions are very poor, there are few people, and they are hard and tiring, everyone has few complaints.
The establishment of Shiyan District Health Center solved the medical and health epidemic prevention problems within a radius of more than ten miles around the district government. However, Shiyan was a radius of hundreds of miles at that time, and the lack of medical treatment was still very serious, especially in several large valleys such as Dachuan, Xiaochuan, Maota, and Daping. Although some Chinese medicine doctors set up outpatient clinics there, the scale was too small and could not be achieved. In order to solve the medical problems in these places, the district government established a health workers association, organized a large-scale joint health personnel in the district, and organized a total of 55 idle medical staff in the society, including 33 traditional Chinese medicine, 8 Western medicine, and 15 medicine practitioners. 18 joint clinics were established in the district, mainly four major mountains and rivers (Dachuan, Xiaochuan, Maota, and Daping). The hospital was led and managed by the hospital in terms of personnel arrangement, drug distribution, economic accounting, etc. Through reasonable personnel layout, the medical and health epidemic prevention work in the entire Shiyan District was basically carried out. Although the clinics are simple, they basically solve the problem of local people receiving minor injuries and illnesses nearby.
In order to implement and implement the central government's instructions to "accelerate the training of rural medical personnel, rescue and inherit the experience of famous old Chinese medicine doctors", we opened a traditional Chinese medicine training class in a ancestral hall in Yuanyang Township. We held four traditional Chinese medicine training classes in 1956, 1958, 1960 and 1962, respectively. The more famous old Chinese medicine doctors in Shiyan at that time, such as Xu Mingjiu, Liang Guoxiu, Ye Zhisheng, Zhang Futian, Li Fuyun, etc., were used as teachers. Students were trained by combining teaching and apprenticeship and teaching methods combining theory and practice. After three years of graduation, those who passed the county health examination were given a graduation certificate. A total of 44 traditional Chinese medicine personnel were trained in the fourth phase, most of whom remained in Shiyan and became the backbone of traditional Chinese medicine in Shiyan at that time. Many of them have obtained senior technical titles and have made great contributions to the construction and development of Shiyan's medical and health care industry. At the same time, our hospital also trained and transformed a large number of baby deliverymen. At that time, pregnant women gave birth to children by local midwives. The incidence of tetanus in newborns is very high. In order to change this situation as soon as possible, our hospital will focus on training newborns every three years, vigorously promote newborns. After the training, the delivery tools and high-temperature disinfection delivery bags (with scissors, hemostasis forceps, disinfection towels, gloves, disinfection cups, wooden fetal heart stethoscopes and other disinfection supplies) were distributed to various medical stations and villages, greatly reducing the mortality rate of newborns.

The development of medical and health work cannot be separated from talents from all aspects. Under the arduous conditions at that time, the incidence of infectious diseases and endemic diseases was relatively high, but the technical strength was very weak. In order to change this situation, from 1961 to 1966, 20 college students (including 12 undergraduates and 8 junior college students) and 75 technical secondary school students were successively divided into 1961-1966. Most of these people later worked in the Municipal People's Hospital and the Second Automobile Zhangwan Hospital. Among them, Xu Deling and Zhang Xianqiang also became famous doctors in the minds of Shiyan people.
Since 1956, Shiyan has been strengthened in basic construction, and a number of water conservancy facilities such as Baierhe Reservoir, Majiahe Reservoir, Xiajiadian Reservoir, and Maotahe Reservoir have been built. All the injured and sick at these construction sites are responsible for the treatment of the patients. In order to ensure that migrant workers and staff on the construction site can receive timely treatment after being injured and sick, we sent medical teams to station on the construction site to serve the injured and sick patients at any time, including the construction of the Danjiangkou Reservoir Dam, and also dispatched 24 people from our hospital to strongly support the water conservancy construction in Shiyan.
From March 1959 to April 1961, according to the instructions of the Party Central Committee on "prevention first, resolutely and thoroughly eliminate infectious diseases and endangering people's health", we carried out the work of eliminating syphilis. First, we organized personnel to conduct a census in each village, and then organized medical teams to stay in each village for half a year to treat local syphilis patients. We also made homemade Chinese patent medicines "Sanxian Dan" and "Wakou Ling" to deliver medicine to our door. 1,054 people were diagnosed for the first time, and 264 people were treated for the second time, which basically cured the syphilis patients in Shiyan District. Due to outstanding achievements, it was commended by the Hubei Provincial Department of Health, and a tour group composed of professors from several major provincial hospitals, such as Tong Erchang and his wife, including five experts from various departments, came to our district to visit and study and guide the work. After the completion of the work of destroying Mei, the work of census on treating uterine prolapse and thyroid cysts was carried out, and some uterine prolapse and thyroid cyst removal were performed. Women with mild prolapse were taught to wash with medicine and give oral pills to every goiter patient. With the gradual improvement of living standards and the widespread use of iodized salt, these two endemic diseases have also been basically controlled in this area. In the late 1960s, due to poor living conditions, many people suffered from severe tinea capitis. Following the instructions of their superiors, we organized personnel to go to the villages and households to check and then treat them, and delivered the medicine to patients and taught them to take it internally and externally. More than 90% of patients with tinea capitis were cured, and more than 1,380 people benefited from this action. According to the "prevention-oriented" policy, we never relax the epidemic prevention work every year, mainly Japanese encephalm, meningitis, measles, and whooping cough. During the onset season, we set up special wards in five rooms in Baierhe, and sent special personnel to treat the onset. At the same time, we vigorously carry out the work of getting epidemic prevention injections and taking polio sugar pills at various medical points. Due to the effective prevention and protection work, Shiyan District Health Center has become a relatively outstanding advanced model in the county and has been commended by the county health bureau every year.
Shiyan is located in a mountainous area and has many elderly patients with chronic branches. We follow the principle of "treatment of winter diseases and summer" in traditional Chinese medicine, and make homemade decoctions and plasters, deliver medicine to patients, and take internal and external patches, which reduces the incidence of chronic branches in winter and spring. During the three-year natural disaster period, many people have caused malnutrition edema due to severe malnutrition. In order to solve the suffering of the people, we used to make "Karma pills" to treat patients with tonic drugs such as soybeans, glutinous rice, jujubes, yellow mao, and honey, which effectively improved the patient's condition and saved the lives of many dying patients.During the busy farming season every year, in order to support rural production and construction, we organized personnel to carry out medical treatment. Everyone made simple and practical medicine packages by themselves, and prepared a variety of economical and practical Chinese patent medicines, went to the countryside, went from village to household, and went deep into the fields to treat patients. In Langxi Village, Dachuan, a patient with severe chronic ulcers in the lower limbs was successfully cured. In 1965, it was vigorously promoted by Xiangyang Daily.
With the acceleration of national basic construction and the continuous development and growth of our hospital, the houses in old streets and medical stations can no longer meet the needs of daily work. From 1963 to 1964, we built 14 external corridor houses with civil structures in Shiyan Mute, with an area of about 300 square meters. We expanded the outpatient clinic and ward, and increased the inpatient department to 20 fixed beds and 12 temporary beds, adding laboratory, operating room and acupuncture room. In 1968, due to the construction of the railway by Second Automobile, the headquarters of the hospital was relocated to the current Shiyan Bridge Hospital to build 20 bungalows in the inner corridor as outpatient clinics. Then, a house with four floors and two units was built, and the first floor was used as a ward, warehouse, operating room and laboratory. At the same time, a small building with a second floor area of about 120 square meters was built as a traditional Chinese medicine warehouse and a traditional Chinese medicine brewing room. The subordinate medical stations have also built bungalows with varying number of civil structures.
In terms of economic management, due to the financial difficulties of the country at that time, the district-level hospitals adopted a policy of "self-bearing profits and losses and compensating the difference" for district-level hospitals. In order to develop the hospital and protect everyone's salary, we tried every means to reduce costs. We purchased many Chinese medicinal materials from the place of origin, including lower-level medical stations, and adopted unified purchase and distribution. We also prepared a variety of Chinese medicine ointments, elixirs, pills, powders, Western medicine mixtures, powders, pastes, powders, etc. These drugs are practical and effective, and are reasonably priced, creating considerable economic benefits for the hospital.
In 1967, Erqi decided to build a factory in Shiyan. In order to cooperate with Erqi's construction, the State Council approved the establishment of a prefecture-level city in Shiyan at the end of 1969.
In 1971, the administrative system reform was implemented, and the Shiyan Health Center was divided into 8 commune health centers. The original health stations of our hospital successively separated from the leadership and management of our hospital and became independent hospitals or outpatient departments. 99 medical staff remained at the headquarters and renamed Shiyan Commune Health Center. In order to adapt to the rapid development of construction in Erqi and Shiyan, Shiyan has successively established many regular hospitals such as Erqi Zhangwan Hospital, Taihe Hospital, Municipal People's Hospital, Municipal Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital and Municipal Maternal and Child Health Hospital. Our hospital has provided some talents for the construction and development of these hospitals.

With the rapid development of the above-mentioned regular hospitals, our hospitals have gradually withdrawn from the stage of history. In 1984, after exporting a large number of people, money and materials, the 22 left behind merged with the municipal health school and became an affiliated outpatient clinic of the municipal health school. In the years that followed, with the changes of the times, they changed their names many times, and successively changed them to "City Orthopedic Hospital", "City Health School Affiliated Hospital", and "City Red Cross Hospital". In March 1999, with the city's health school being incorporated into Yunyang Medical College, they were renamed again to "Yanqiao Hospital of Yunyang Medical College".
