(Health Times Zhao Yuanzhi ) "I really didn't expect that my tumor surgery could be completed through a robot, and it was made in China!" On October 25, 40-year-old Gu Tao (pseudonym) underwent radical thyroid cancer surgery at the South China Hospital Affiliated to Shenzhen University. After the operation, he sighed and proudly extended his thumb.

Professor Yi Shijian, deputy director of South China Hospital Affiliated to Shenzhen University and executive director of thyroid breast surgery, introduced that this is the first clinical research operation for thyroid cancer radical cure in the country, and it is also another major progress in the transformation and application of domestic surgical robots, marking another new breakthrough in independent innovation of high-end medical equipment in my country. Recently, the patient Gu Tao has recovered successfully and was discharged from the hospital.

Gu Tao is 40 years old this year. During the treatment of type II diabetes , examinations found solid nodules on the right lobe of thyroid . After consultation with the breast stoma surgery expert of South China Hospital and puncture biopsy of , he was diagnosed with papillary carcinoma of the right lobe of the thyroid gland.

"Because the patient's weight is close to 200 kilograms, not only does he have diabetes , but he also has relatively many comorbidities, and the risk of surgery and anesthesia is higher." Yi Shijian said, "There are many important organs around the thyroid gland. Any organ damage will cause serious complications. Moreover, this patient usually smokes more, his airway condition is not very good, he has sleep apnea syndrome, and there is a high possibility of serious complications such as laryngeal edema, spasm, and during the perioperative period."

In order to ensure that the patient obtains the best postoperative effect, reduce complications, and reduce the risk of surgery, Professor Yi Shijian's surgical team organized a multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment MDT work meeting for the entire hospital to discuss the patient's condition in depth, and continuously improve the surgical plan and various emergency plans. Finally, combined with preoperative examination and patient wishes, the team decided to perform a radical surgery for robot-assisted thyroid cancer for Gu Tao.

rotation, hook, pick, rotate... In the narrow anatomical space, hold the clip with the "left hand" and hold the clamp with the "right hand" to explore, peel, and stitch, each movement is clean and neat, without losing a slight slightest. The operation time was about 2 and a half hours, and there was almost no bleeding throughout the whole process.

"If you are not careful in thyroid surgery, it is easy to damage the recurrent laryngeal nerve and parathyroid . The ' naked eye 3D ' provided by the surgical robot has a stable and clear field of vision, and the tiny blood vessels and nerves are clearly visible, which can more accurately identify the recurrent laryngeal nerve and parathyroid gland." After the operation, Yi Shijian said, "The surgical instrument has a wrist joint that imitates humans and can also be flexibly operated in a narrow cavity that cannot be extended by human hands. It can help us remove the lesions cleaner, minimize trauma, and thus better protect the nerves around the thyroid and blood vessels ."

The Tumai® laparoscopic surgical robot used in this operation is the most difficult laparoscopic surgical robot in the field of surgical robots. It is also the first four-arm laparoscopic surgical robot developed by Chinese companies and approved by NMPA for the market. It is reported that the thyroid disease robotic surgery team led by Professor Yi Shijian has continuously challenged the difficulty of the operation and has successfully completed several Tumai® laparoscopic surgery robot simulation experiments. This time, Professor Yi’s team was the first to successfully carry out clinical research and treatment of domestic robotic thyroid cancer in China, which also marks that the robot-assisted thyroid surgery in South China Hospital has reached an advanced level in the country.
