My name is Yang Yi. I am currently working on the Gulf of Guinea in Africa, about 12,000 kilometers away from China - Sao Tome and Principe. As the captain of the 17th batch of medical teams in China (Sichuan), I will carry out 18 months of medical assistance.
My story with West China began 23 years ago. Although I have been taught by teachers since I was a child that "if you are a good minister, you are a good doctor", I am not like many colleagues and classmates around me, who were born in a medical family or have been determined to become a good doctor since I was a child. But in the college entrance examination in 1999, the wheel of fate unexpectedly brought me to Huaxiba , and I became a five-year undergraduate student in clinical medicine at West China Medical University.
From then on, I was closely linked to West China.
The first two years of basic course study were calm and did not make me have a strong interest in medicine. The most profound change that left a deep impression on me was that in 2001, West China Medical University and Sichuan University merged and renamed Sichuan University West China Clinical Medicine College/ West China Hospital . The joint school gave me the opportunity to minor in business administration . At that time, I even expected to give up the doctor and go to business in the future.
junior year, we started to learn pathology , which is an extremely important bridge between basic medicine and clinical medicine. As I learned further, I began to feel the changes in the functions, metabolism and morphological structure caused by various diseases in the human body. For the first time, I saw the smoking person's lungs covered with black holes, the stomachs filled with roundworms, the fingers of gangrene, and the visual and psychological impacts brought to me by various tumor masses. Even I might not feel it myself, and medicine is slowly beginning to really attract me.
followed by the study of diagnostics, and came into contact with the "standardized patients (SP)" that made me amazing at the time. They play the role of patients and let medical students simulate consultations, physical examinations, and experience the feeling of being a doctor is an important method in clinical medical education in West China.
In this process, I also learned for the first time that before using the cold stethoscope to contact the patient's skin, there should be a warming process. The first time I "see" what symptoms should be caused by acute appendicitis in and . The most impressive thing was a special SP teacher. He stood in front of us calmly and nakedly, using his own body to guide the shy and shy man's reproductive system examination. Now, whenever I think about it, I respect that teacher.
Through this one-to-one learning, I have mastered how to obtain useful clinical information through standardized and accurate consultation and physical examination. The process of defrauding my threads and decorating my cocoons like a detective fascinated me. It was not until then that I truly accepted medicine and was willing to make it a career I had worked in throughout my life.
I am now a vascular surgeon. Life is full of coincidences, and what started my surgeon’s dream was the first surgery I participated in in my life - the most common varicose vein surgery in vascular surgery.
At that time, as an intern, I didn’t know what vascular surgery was. I just changed shifts and entered the operating room of the second highest inpatient building in the West China campus at that time. I assisted in completing the operation with the excitement of taking the stage for the first time. Although there was not much in-depth understanding of the West China Hospital's "virtue, proficient, practical and innovative" training at that time, the teachers' superb skills during the operation planted the "seeds" that must be surgeons in my heart.
The more than a year when I graduated from senior to junior is approaching my "darkest moment". With excellent grades and annual scholarships, I have suffered tens of thousands of critical hits such as admission to graduate school, failure to take the postgraduate entrance examination, and elimination of the first round of resident interviews. I was not depressed, but became more and more calm. I believed that "those who did not defeat you will eventually make you stronger." I seized the opportunity to become a resident in the imaging department's standard training and constantly settled myself in No. 37, Guoxue Lane, a place full of opportunities and challenges.
During the two years of rotation, I took every opportunity to try to operate surgery through shifts with classmates, top-up shifts and other possible methods, learn the basic skills and knowledge of surgery as much as possible, and feel the charm of surgery more closely - "Like a knight, many problems can be solved easily", the fun is indescribable. While not losing the clinical work of regular training, I learned from the lessons of the failure of the last postgraduate entrance examination, honestly leveraged the textbooks, and consolidated the knowledge points. In 2006, I successfully took the postgraduate entrance examination as I wished, and I studied for a master's degree in general surgery in West China. I continued to pursue my dream of surgery.
I firmly believe that encounters in life will always be accompanied by beauty. On my journey to study and medical treatment, every key node will meet the teacher who leads me on the right path. When I first entered university, Teacher Han Yu, who was as kind as my elder brother, quickly integrated into college life; Teacher Cheng Chunyan, who was intellectual and heartwarming, inspired my confidence and mobilized my confidence to play my abilities and take responsibility, allowing me to successfully run for the university class monitor and actively participate in the work of the club; Teacher Jiang Lisheng, who was humble and knowledgeable as a resident doctor, was the guide for me in general surgery, and made me truly understand surgery. Luckily, I met two mentors in the postgraduate stage - Professor Zhao Jichun, who founded West China vascular surgery from scratch and was the leader in the liver transplant industry in China and the tenured professor of West China Hospital, who led the development of live liver transplantation in China. These two mentors are my academic "pilot lights" and my guide in life. In them, I gradually understand the meaning of "being virtuous and professional, seeking practicality and innovation" as a doctor and a Western Chinese. In an environment like West China, there are the guidance of medical experts in front of me, and there are excellent and diligent colleagues and classmates around me. After being around excellent people for a long time, I have become a person who chases the light without realizing it. Even if I don’t hold the light in my hand, I will be covered with light.
After graduating from a doctorate in 2011, I successfully stayed in the hospital for work. Under the guidance of Professor Zhao Jichun, I continued to break through the limits of medicine, completed impossible challenges, saved many living lives, and mastered the international advanced treatment technology in the field of complex aortic diseases and retroperitoneal tumors treatment. During this process, West China Vascular Surgery Department has gone from scratch, and I was fortunate to become a witness and participant in this innovation, and I have grown unknowingly.
I have had a dream of joining the army since I was a child, and I have always hoped that one day I could go to war for my country. After becoming a doctor, from the Wenchuan earthquake, to the Lushan earthquake in Ya'an, to the outbreak of the new crown epidemic, whenever a major natural disaster or an epidemic occurs, and the hospital forms an emergency medical team, I will actively ask for the fight as soon as possible, but due to professional restrictions and chances, I have not been able to do it.
I have a special teacher and colleague around me - Professor Ma Yukui, "China's most beautiful foreign aid doctor". Teacher Ma performed foreign aid medical tasks twice in Angola, Sao Tome and Principe, Africa, respectively. His deeds and spirit deeply influenced me. Our vascular surgery department was awarded the title of "National Outstanding Foreign Aid Advanced Collective" in 2018. I also secretly made up my mind to have the opportunity to become a foreign medical team member and serve the motherland in another way. Fortunately, this wish has been understood and strongly supported by his wife, who is also a doctor.
In November 2020, I immediately took the initiative to sign up for the selection of reserve members of the medical teams in Sao Tome and Principe. After more than half a year of language learning and preliminary preparation, I passed the assessment and successfully became the captain and temporary party branch secretary of the 17th medical team in China (Sichuan). On September 18, 2021, I led all 8 members of the medical team to Sao Tome and Principe in the Gulf of Guinea in Africa and began an 18-month foreign aid medical work.
As of now, I have led the team to carry out foreign aid tasks in Saint-Pu for 13 months. As a West China, I have always led the medical team members to carry out various foreign aid medical work with a high sense of responsibility and a spirit of continuous innovation, and have achieved gratifying results and have pioneered more than 20 innovative medical work for Sichuan foreign aid.Completed the first ultrasound-guided minimally invasive sclerosis sealing surgery for varicose veins under São Pu’s ultrasound-guided ultrasound laparoscopic surgery, the first minimally invasive tooth extraction surgery, the first public welfare project for teenagers in São Pu’s youth, compiled the first Portuguese electrocardiogram manual, created a new exploration of the talent training model of São Pu’s medical, and the first comprehensive health record of São Pu’s Chinese. As a "white-clad diplomat", he led the medical team members to bring health and hope to Saint-Pu, and contributed the strength of Sichuan health and health people to the construction of a healthy community with a shared future in China and Africa.
Fortunately, I entered Wande Gate and built a dream of Huaxi Dam. I saw ginkgo in front of Qide Hall, and the bell tower and lotus pond welcomed the fragrance of flowers.
The past 23 years have been the 23 years since West China Hospital transformed and took off, and it was also the 23 years when I gradually grew and matured from a medical student and became a West China doctor. My story with No. 37, Guoxue Lane will continue.
