It has been 27 years since our company's VEC also began to introduce and develop VE methods in Showa 39 (1964). During this period, the world changed from individual products with hardware as the main body to system products with software as the main body, and the production form also changed from a small variety to a small variety of production, and is even now changing to a limited production model of one variety of production in batches. It can be seen that the diversification of customer needs and the shortening of product life cycle are becoming increasingly obvious. In this case, if you cannot provide "original and differentiated products" with low prices, you will not be able to satisfy your customers. So VEC is needed from the development stage. On the other hand, original and differentiated products cannot be developed overnight. To this end, we need to organize past data while constantly working hard to cultivate insights that foresee the trends of the times.
The process of developing new products is a question of how to study and decide what to do and "how to do". “What to do” is to create a product concept based on a systematic understanding of diverse customer needs and technology trends. "How to do it" refers to how to concretely visualize the concept of a certain product by incorporating the latest materials and production technologies. In order to apply VEC in the stage of new product development, it is necessary to clarify which stage should be used what method should be adopted.
For technical products with rapid advancement of technological innovation, technology development as the source of new product development is extremely important. Therefore, it is very important to formulate a work plan for promoting VEC activities for each product based on this starting point. As its specific measures, the company includes: Exploring the "predictive VEC" of component technology, "marketing VEC" of building product concepts, developing trial productized "development VEC", and finding the next stage of development topics based on market information. The four stages of working group activities are chain and are linked to the next stage of product working group to promote. The fate of
products has been decided at the development stage, so sufficient energy must be invested during this period.
In the question of "how to do it", differentiated products must be designed through unique original creativity.
One of the methods to propose original creativity is the Teardown analysis method. (This method means that the creativity depicted in the mind is limited, so it is better to see it than to hear it", and compare similar products together to create excellent creativity and incorporate it into product improvements) Further research on this method, including analytical methods, will enable it to be effectively applied to the "how to do" VEC.
In our company, we are also facing the need to develop new products, such as cross-industry composite new products that have never been developed. I think it is necessary to study VEC methods for this composite product in different technical fields in the future.
While seeking to highly promote the VEC activities of "what to do" and "how to do", we hope to provide products with high value (V) customer needs (N) (function × quality × practicality × time)/cost (C) in VEC to promote the growth and prosperity of the customer base.
