Whenever the food issue comes up, Yuan Longping will start from that tragic scene: "I personally saw at least five people lying on the roadside, on the edge of the fields and under the bridge. They really died of hunger on the road. A fellow villager was very hungry. He peeled off the bark and took a few big bites, which made the fellow's stomach burst. The ground kept rolling, and we could only watch him die in extreme pain. "
This unbearable scene brought a painful sting to Yuan Longping, and it was a wound in his heart that was difficult to heal, even if it was scarred. Well, his heart still ached.
"You are engaged in scientific research. It would be great if you could cultivate a new variety with an yield of 800 kilograms or 1,000 kilograms per mu!" A farmer's simple words deeply touched him. Frequent fertilization is not as good as changing to better seeds. Farmers need good seeds!
Yuan Longping has deep feelings about hunger and seeds.
However, how many people know about Yuan Longping's sentiments and his journey from mud-legged farmer to world-class scientist? For this reason, we sincerely thank "Yuan Longping's World" for coming out.
"The World of Yuan Longping" is known as the biography of world scientists that surpasses "The Biography of Newton" and "The Biography of Einstein". It comprehensively displays the tortuous process of Yuan Laohua's exploration of hybrid rice, and tells the story of his emotions with a seed in the rice field. There is also Mr. Yuan’s life experience from birth to graduation from the Agricultural College, as well as his love and spiritual life. The authors of
Chen Qiwen used the spirit of searching for seeds to complete this book. He is a member of the Chinese Writers Association, executive director of the Chinese Prose Society, and a national first-class writer. His representative works include "Southern Ice and Snow Report", "China Grain Report", "Lifeline - China Water Conservancy Survey", etc. He has also written more than 70 short stories and short stories.
The basic content and author of this book are introduced here. Next, I will introduce the essence of this book from three aspects: Yuan Longping's life world, scientific world and spiritual world.
1. The birth and growth of life
Each of our lives begins with a string of numbers, and Yuan Longping is no exception. On August 13, 1929, the ninth day of the seventh lunar month, he weighed 3680 grams. The person who delivered him was Lin Qiaozhi, the mother of all babies. She could not help but cheer: Another fat baby! very nice!
Yuan Longping was born in Peking Union Medical College Hospital . He came with the great famine in my country's northwest and North China. Is he here to save this hungry world?
In that era of war and chaos, she was lucky enough to give birth in the Union Medical College Hospital, which is renowned in China and even the world, which shows that the Yuan family is not an ordinary family.
This is indeed the case. In the 1930s, the Yuan family built a large house, the Summer Palace, in the north of De'an City, where Yuan Longping spent his childhood.
Whether he was studying in the Summer Palace or at Hankou Rotary Primary School, Yuan Longping was always happy. This was mainly due to his strong father and his mother who loved reading books by the German philosopher Nietzsche. My mother is an optimistic, open-minded and intellectual woman.
A mother nurtures her children like nurturing seeds, moisturizing them silently. Four of their five brothers have gone to college and one has gone to a technical secondary school. This all stems from my mother’s subtle words and deeds: to be philanthropic and honest.
Sometimes a small thing or a story may affect the orientation of our life, just like Shennong's in Shenlong Cave not far from Hankou, and the capitalist's gardening field.
One weekend in autumn, Yuan Longping came with his mother to pay a visit to Shennong. Watching people from the surrounding villages come one after another to worship Shennong respectfully. He didn't understand: Why was Shennong so respected?
His mother told him the story of the mythical "Tian Yusu" in "The Book of Yizhou", which seemed to give him some divine revelation.
When he was in the first grade of elementary school, his teacher took Yuan Longping and his classmates to visit a capitalist’s gardening farm. They had the wonderful impression of “if you want to eat fruit, just reach out and pick it up and eat it; if you want to drink milk, the cows will come over and squeeze a cup and drink it”. Let him linger. At this point, he longed for the pastoral beauty and the joy of agriculture.
This superposition effect made Yuan Longping think: When he grows up, he must learn to be a farmer! A tiny bud bloomed from the seed of destiny.
Often cruel facts can give people a huge wake-up call, which is so violent that it is unparalleled. When Yuan Longping was 10 years old, his family returned to Chongqing and experienced Japanese planes bombing Chongqing on a large scale for two consecutive days, dropping incendiary bombs that were more terrifying than bombs. More than 4,000 people died on the spot, more than 2,000 people were injured, and 200,000 people became homeless refugees.
From 1938 to 1944, Japan conducted strategic bombing of Chongqing for five and a half years, which was as brutal as the Nanjing Massacre.
The unscrupulousness of the Japanese made Yuan Longping understand a truth: the weak eat the strong! If we want to not be bullied by others, China must become stronger.
In an environment where hunger and war coexist, hunger is getting closer and closer to the Yuan family. The whole family relies on the father to earn money to support the family.
But no matter how chaotic the world is, Yuan Longping's parents have always insisted on sending their children to school. His middle school life was very difficult. He ate brown rice, lit tung oil lamps, had a toothpaste every two weeks, wore gray cloth uniforms issued by the government, and wore shoes with holes.
When Yuan Longping was a student, according to his own words: follow your interests. He is a person who loves to think things through. He discovers problems, raises them, and solves them. This is Yuan Longping's typical character trait.
His physics teacher once said: One kilogram of coal can release 8 kilocalories of heat when completely burned. If all the energy can be released, it can release 2.16 trillion kilocalories of heat, which is equivalent to a medium-sized building. The electricity consumed by the city in several years. Yuan Longping, like his classmates, exclaimed: How is that possible!
This is a seemingly simple but profound question. It inspired Yuan Longping's life: How can a person or a seed release huge energy?
With this thought in mind, Yuan Longping ended his middle school years and entered a new era. He got his wish and entered the Agronomy Department of the private Xianghui College.
When four years of college were coming to an end, Yuan Longping faced another major decision in his life: Where to go?
"Obey to the unified distribution, go to the countryside, go to the most difficult places, go to the places where the motherland needs it most!" This was the loudest slogan of that era. As a result, he was assigned to teach in the rural area of Anjiang at the foot of Xuefeng Mountain in western Hunan.
