On October 13, 2021, China Petroleum’s major science and technology project "Development of New Chemical Materials for Oilfields" passed the expert demonstration and review meeting, and the project was officially launched. It is understood that the project has a 3-year research and development cycle and consists of 4 topics. Among them, topic 2 is "Development and Application of New Sealing Materials for Oilfields". It is planned to develop 7 high-quality rubber seals, 3 of which are made of key seals for drilling pumps. To complete field application experiments, two specifications of annular blowout preventer ball cores and one casing head BT sealing ring must complete working condition simulation experiments, and one screw pump stator rubber must complete in-factory verification experiments.

Valve rubber is one of the key seals at the hydraulic end of the drilling pump. It is also a wearing part and is a dynamic seal in high-temperature, high-pressure, and alkaline corrosive medium environments. At present, high-quality valve rubber mainly relies on imports, while domestic valve rubber generally has problems such as low reliability and short service life. Not only is the risk of leakage high, but the cost of drilling remains high.

In order to break through the technical bottleneck of key seals of drilling pumps as soon as possible and solve the stuck problem faced by China's oil drilling pumps, the "Development and Application of New Sealing Materials for Oilfields" project team focused on the complex structure of rubber materials, complex properties of rubber materials, and rubber products. A "one-line" technical research was carried out on complex failure and service behavior. After hundreds of experiments, thousands of batches of data were obtained, and the formula and process of the HNBR drilling pump valve rubber were finalized. In order to speed up the product research and development process, the project team independently designed the product mold based on the valve rubber structural design drawing provided by Gemstone Machinery, carried out research on the drilling pump valve rubber molding process in the laboratory and successfully conducted trial production of the product.

On June 15, the project team leader Hu Haihua and senior engineer Wu Yu went to Baoji Petroleum Machinery Factory to carry out application experiments with the independently developed and prepared drilling pump valve rubber. After confirming that the appearance and performance of the product met the technical requirements, Baoshi Machinery discussed and formulated an experimental plan. After the valve rubber and valve body were assembled, the 52MPa×4h limit condition test was carried out on the F-1600HL drilling pump of Baoji Petroleum Machinery . The results showed that there was no damage to the six valve rubbers, and the compression permanent deformation was smaller than that of Gemstone's current products. . Baoshi Machinery has determined that the self-developed drilling pump valve rubber fully meets the technical specifications of the product before leaving the factory.

The valve rubber adopts the seal formula and process independently developed by PetroChina. With the support of the valve rubber structural design drawing provided by Gemstone Machinery, Lanzhou Chemical Research Center independently designed and completed the mold manufacturing of the product, and implemented it in the laboratory. The independent preparation of the product marks that CNPC has mastered the complete set of process technologies for the development and preparation of high-quality HNBR material valve rubber, which is a good start for the completion of the follow-up tasks of the project.
